crabcigar, you can still be our friend. just because we won't oink together doesn't mean we can't roll together.

a) captaincurk
b) Johnny (Jonathan, actually) Hanson
c) 19
d) male (obviously ^^)
e) Germany, Cologne

1) Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds (embarassing, huh)
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Joanna Newsom - Ys

2) Since most people here have tried to exactly circumphrase "rockism", which to me is more of a slippery, less easily defined term, I will not do that again (sorry folks!). Although I do agree with rockism in many ways, it has a property, which troubles me, and here's why:

A couple of weeks ago we had a contest for newcomer rockbands of our area. The winning band was all styled up and stuff, but they could play their instruments! I was like "Yes, FINALLY! The return of the rockbands!" and a friend of mine said "No no, they are obviously posing. This is all commercial fake."

I am trying to show, how you can adhere to the "laws of rockism" and still be of a completely different opinion of an artist.

Please try me for using anecdotal evidence and not answering the question either, but this has been done so many times before!

3) http://img385.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cat20power2020the20mempul2.jpg

4) Errrr ... I have to admit that I have not consciously listened to Deerhoof recently, but I do like Sufjan Stevens, and here's why:

When I'm not clubbing around cologne, I like to listen to music, in order to either reflect on somthing or simply chill out and relax. And Sufjan's music is a pretty good match for both occasions. To me, Sufjan Stevens is like some sort of "Cat Stevens" of today. And I'd like to add (if I may) that his music sort of turns women on ("To be alone with you"), too!

5) Is there any reason why I would possibly want more than one invite? If so, I want many; if not so, I'll be happy with one :)

Please excuse any misspellings, I'm not a native speaker and kindof in a hush right now.

Enjoy the sun, people!

Rockism, derived from the British music press in the early '80s, can be defined in more than one way, and it would be difficult to recognize one absolute meaning. While there are many vague interpretations of it, there is one I beleive to be true. Although it is more narrow, and more up to debate here is the here is my translation of rockism and the ideas behind it. Essentially, it is treating rock as normative. From a rockist view, rock is the standard state of popular music. Interestingly it is not entirely rockist to love rock, or to write about it. You also care about R&B or norteño or bubble gum pop, but discuss them in a rockist way. The idea is built into the way people talk informally about whatever kinds of popular music interest them. If artists such as Usher or Elizaa Carthy do something amazing....it rocks.

4)
I personally don't think very highly of either artist. I am a musician myself, I play the Tenor Saxophone and study Music Theory, for that reason I find myself more proficient to hearing patterns, rhythms, ideas, chords, harmonies, etc... I can say that Sufjan has somewhat interesting ideas with his banjo, and sometimes other string instruments, but I do not enjoy his music. I find it very narrow, he hardly leaves the octave he starts in. His voice however is soothing... one of the few compliments I can give.
I could rant about how terrible Deerhoof is for hours. I've never heard a worse voice in my life. I hate it. If enjoying Deerhoof's music is acquired, I have yet to acquire it. The only thing I can say is that even though every aspect of the music I really do not like one bit, it is very different, and I'm sure it will appeal to a crowd that is very different from myself.
The question was however which artist is better. To answer it I say Sufjan Stevens.

5) One, please. (Richy✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧)

Damn, sorry guys. My deepest apologies to the benevolent moderators here. I'm using my brother's Amiga, and it can't handle ASCII protocol correctly.

I'm going to try this once more: please send my acceptance invite or rejection to RichyG✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧

RichyGtwo, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:38 (seventeen years ago) link

okay, once more (please don't ban me)

RichyGtwo, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:39 (seventeen years ago) link

RichyGtwo,

We appreciate the informal and personal tone you brought to your answers. You are approved, an invite has been sent to the above e-mail address.

Oink Administrator, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait... am I approved? Who is this RichyGtwo guy?

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 02:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I would just like to say that I posted on this site long ago and I never received any response.

tohms19, Sunday, 15 April 2007 02:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I have looked through this thread and I didn't see any other post by "RichyGtwo"
Unless I am wrong, and it really does not seem so, someone noticed my email did not register and took advantage of it by replication my username and giving a different email. MY email is RichyGee (at) gmail (dot) com.

I am sorry for this inconvenience and I am in no way trying to obtain multiple invites. Maybe cross referencing IP Adress' can confirm that RichyGtwo is an imposter. However this is me, from the original account from which the application was submitted. I put a good bit of effort into getting in to OiNK and it is very disturbing seeing someone else try to steal from me. Once again, I'm sorry for this inconvenience and I would greatly appreciate some aid.

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 02:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Oink Team,

I would just like to say thank you for the invite, it is a privilege to be a part of your community. There is so much incredible music here -- but really at the end of it all it's about people and the connections we make.

Infinite Thanks,
RichyG

RichyGtwo, Sunday, 15 April 2007 02:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Whoa,

What the hell is going on? Please ban fake RichyG, he is trying to steal my invite, which I've already used anyway.

Please don't besmirch my good name.

Highest Regards,
RichyG

RichyGtwo, Sunday, 15 April 2007 02:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Why are you doing this...? Please OiNK Admin, there has to be some way to justify that this is actually me. Why would I make a whole new account on this message board to correct my email anyway? Why not just use the one I already have anyway. Look you can tell there is a different person in each account just by the syntax and sentence structure. For example, RichyGtwo has used words such as "hell" and "damn" which aren't vulgar words themselves, but just more aggressive. I have used no such words in my own posts. RichyGtwo is also using a more formal "letter-like" method of speech, which I have not done as well.
Please, please, don't ban me. I can verify that this is genuinely me.

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 02:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Well met good sir,

I also can verify that this is genuinely me. But I will not plead my case like a bleating lamb. For only the Oink Administrators have the wisdom of Solomon.

RichyGtwo, Sunday, 15 April 2007 02:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Alright we will leave this up to the OiNK admins. I would appreciate you not calling me a bleating lamb. I have every right to be furious at you and insult you but I am refraining, I would like you to show me the same respect. I am arguing for something I care for

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 03:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I've come to realize how this is fake and that you really don't have invites to hand out. the invite system has been "broken down" for more than 2 weeks and I'm sure OiNK would have that fixed as soon as possible if it did happen. Funny idea you guys had, but it should have gotten old about 500 hits ago. The joke's over.

And RichyG, the "oink administrators" are richygtwo. They don't have any invites to hand out and they never did. I doubt OiNK would put invites in the hands of degenerates like these guys.

Oh, Cat Power still sucks.

grandepois, Sunday, 15 April 2007 03:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Dear "RichyG,"

I think you'll find it's not uncommon for those who don't receive invites to air their grievances publicly.

"Grandepois" has a lot of valuable things to say, but those were in his application. All else is slander.

Please enjoy the invite sent to your second account.

Thank you.

Oink Administrator, Sunday, 15 April 2007 04:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah fuck, I knew this was fake from the beginning... but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try... just in case. I waited patiently for 4 days, but it's time to give up and go looking elsewhere. Have fun, "Oink Admin."

atomsforpeace, Sunday, 15 April 2007 04:46 (seventeen years ago) link

So this entire thing is a scam? Well, I did think it was "fishy" (har har), considering that their invite system "broke down" and that more than a ton of people applied and invites were going out...

and 23 invites since January, you guys must be fans of Blonde Redhead's latest album of Jim Carrey's cute little movie to pick such a random number...why should I care, either way I'm not part of this community. Tee hee.

crabcigar, Sunday, 15 April 2007 04:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, you've got to hand it to them though... most people wouldn't keep up a prank for so long. Their commitment is impressive, to say the least. A bit of a shame, some of the people on here were pretty cool. Crabcigar, let's start our own super-exclusive torrent site and IP ban Oink Admin. Haha.

atomsforpeace, Sunday, 15 April 2007 05:51 (seventeen years ago) link

atomsforpeace, Oink is not a pickup bar. Please take your flirting elsewhere.

Oink Administrator, Sunday, 15 April 2007 07:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, if it is a scam, I'd recommend that you guys search for Pedro's Tracker. Heck, I'll make it easier: Pedro's Tracker . I've not been accepted yet myself, but I'm sure a few of the smarter ones of us will get in. Good luck.

So are you saying your not going to invite me? Is this really a scam?

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

It mostly likely is a scam, but who's to say? Either you wait an eternity and never get an invite or just drop the idea. Normally you'd have to go chat with the real OiNK people in the mIRC chatrooms; I didn't know that snooping through forums would do any good. Heck, check the 4chan forums if you have to, you'd probably find some gold here. My friend got through OiNK with a 4.0 ratio going on, not from here, but from an invite of another friend. Maybe I'll ask him to PM the real OiNK admins and bring this bootleg joint downtown to Chinatown.

crabcigar, Sunday, 15 April 2007 15:12 (seventeen years ago) link

That would be nice, maybe while your at it ask him to hook me one up :D
My real email is a few posts up

Dear "crabcigar,"

Funny that your friend doesn't have an invite to send *you*, isn't it?

Enjoyed your fishing tale though! Maybe next time you'll catch something!

Thank you,

Oink Administrator, Sunday, 15 April 2007 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait Oink Administrator, are you not going to send me an invite to RichyGee (at) gmail (dot) com?

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Im clinging to the hope that you did not scam me : /

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes -- welcome to Oink!

Thank you,

Oink Administrator, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Have you sent it? Its not in my Inbox or Spam folder

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Dear "RichyG,"

We have seen this scam before -- you cannot have two invites. There are only six left.

Thank you,

Oink Administrator, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link

dear oink admin,
was i accepted or rejected, because ive waited for 3 weeks without a response.

tohms19, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

But I never got the first one?

RichyG, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

But I never got the first one?

Dear "RichyG,"

Is that a question or a statement?

I am trying to work with you here. Perhaps you need to think about making this easy on me.

Thank you,

Oink Administrator, Sunday, 15 April 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I'll squeeze an invite out of him once his invites replenish. Don't worry about me, folks. I hope you enjoy your fishing excursion as well; catch some Sufjan-starved Christians while you're at it. But seeing how you're not getting anywhere with these scams, it's better to salvage yourself. After all, it is the Sabbath and you must remain holy, won't you "Oink Admin"? :)

And funny you were up around what, 4 AM in the morning, Greenwich Mean Time Zone, replying to posts on this forum? Isn't OiNK stationed in the UK? Who lingers around on forums so early in the morning when one should be patrolling fellow OiNK users and their activity, let alone, manage this up since January. I think we have a fellow American among us.

By the way, when you mention "six invites left", whatever happened to your invite systems being down? And then convincing others "There's plenty of invites left!"

Cute!!! ^_^

crabcigar, Sunday, 15 April 2007 17:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Dear "crabcigar,"

Things make more sense when you read the entire thread, instead of the parts of your choosing.

Also, I don't "patrol" fellow Oink users, Encyclopedia Brown.

Thank you,

Nightmares on wax - Carboot soul

2)Rockism is essentially a prejudiced attitude to any form of popular music that doesn't conform to the values of rock music (in the most narrow and conventional sense of the term). The most obvious example of this is the tendency of middle-aged fans of 'classic rock' to describe any music that involves the overt use of electronic instruments as not 'real music'.

4)To be honest they both dont match my style.I can ,though, recognize the quality in music when i hear it and i can say that both have some.I can not tell you wich one is better.I do like Sufjan Stevens
more though. He is more intimate and melodic.Deerhoof is more chaotic
and playful, more experimental which is nice if the result is good enough. In his case the result was good but not enough.
