A sorta magical one-person meme run, imo.

Social media is horrifying, even the clothed photo would have dozens of "I want to fuck you sooooooo bad" comments.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 10 May 2016 21:44 (seven years ago) link

hell I see that every day on friends' profiles. usually some innocent selfie, followed by some skeevy comment and a reminder that "creepy comments will be deleted" and then someone apologizing for acting like the guy with the soiled shirt and the colt 45 whistling at people in front of the Food Lion

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 21:47 (seven years ago) link

Posting narcissistic photos for likes remains an alien concept to me anyway. Nothing makes me feel as old as that stuff.

does the ability to read other people's intentions come with age?

Always.

all my selfie likes keep me youthful

Credit where credit is due: every time I've tried to take a photo of myself the results have been ... unhappy, there must be a skill to it

Never changed username before (cardamon), Wednesday, 11 May 2016 15:30 (seven years ago) link

Plus dunno if it's personal narcissism that has people posting selfies, so much as that selfies are the standard way of communicating on a lot of social media websites

Never changed username before (cardamon), Wednesday, 11 May 2016 15:31 (seven years ago) link

There are numerous reasons for posting selfies, of course. Narcissism is one of them and I'm not even mad at it - we're all narcissists to some degree. My issue is with the pic I posted which takes for granted that your main reason for posting pics of yourself is to get as many likes as possible and that men or porn culture or whatever is to blame if your naked pic gets more attention than one where you're wearing clothes - but still striking the same coquettish pose. That's the kind of narcissism I just don't get.

but both of the women are fictional, and the image at least appears to be an example of policing women on the internet and how they present themselves. i'm not sure going "oh yes but my issue is with my assumed motivations of Gallant, not how the Like-leavers receive Goofus" helps much.

i guess it could also be intended solely as a send-up of the catcalling males and what gets their attention but it's hard to separate this out. there's something about it which seems to be judging the woman too. maybe it's just me but i feel like the image is a symptom of the assumption that women's representations of themselves are fundamentally motivated by narcissism, or by a desire for loud catcalling approval from men.

Oh absolutely. That is a big part of why it's so frustrating. In blaming whatever it is the picture is symptomatic of on «#porn culture» the women who post - and like - this seem very blind to their own - implied - assumptions «that women's representations of themselves are fundamentally motivated by narcissism, or by a desire for loud catcalling approval from men.» If not for porn culture they would be getting as many ig likes as Kim K, obviously.

I think we're kind of talking past each other, but I can't tell? This meme is trouble.

sisterhood of the baggering vance (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 11 May 2016 21:29 (seven years ago) link

the condom/bag photo is originally from the onion, where it was attached to a funnier joke:

(though I did lol at the bag joke as well, mea culpa)

Ok, I lost control at the Onion's joke.

Yeah maybe it's a coincidence but the optics in that pic are of a white guy who doesn't want to get too close to black people.

pplains, Thursday, 12 May 2016 13:44 (seven years ago) link

fuck that guy, fuck that concept, fuck the underlying argument of that being a reasonable line of thinking in the first place, fuck anyone who walks side by side down the sidewalk and doesn't fall into single file when you pass people on the sidewalk. don't live in a city if you don't like people standing close to you.

ulysses, Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:03 (seven years ago) link

unless you're autistic or something

everybody OTM. also the guy is very clearly dicking around on his phone, to boot

fuck anyone who walks side by side down the sidewalk and doesn't fall into single file when you pass people on the sidewalk.

Yes, these people are terrible. The amount of bad sidewalk etiquette is appalling.

It's a bitter sweet symphony, sure.

Mark G, Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:31 (seven years ago) link

Obviously taking up more than your fair share of the pavement is abominable behaviour (though I suspect the thinking behind the [clearly not actually serious] invention is a retaliation against ~other people~ taking up too much pavement, and thus so goes a self-perpetuating cycle of aggravation that is the modern city). But I'm a bit "uh" about this: don't live in a city if you don't like people standing close to you. Like, do you genuinely believe everybody in the world gets to choose where they live? Do you not realise that this is not at all a possibility for billions of people?
