“My stuff always represents what I’m going through,” Miller says today. “Whenever I look at any of my work I can feel what my mindset was and I remember who I was with at the time. When I look at Holy Terror, which I really don’t do all that often, I can really feel the anger ripple out of the pages. There are places where it is bloodthirsty beyond belief.”

Does he have any regrets? “I don’t want to go back and start erasing books I did,” he replies. “I don’t want to wipe out chapters of my own biography. But I’m not capable of that book again.”

It’s worth noting that whatever his detractors may think of his politics, Miller still happily inveighs against “white, heterosexual family values” and has no interest in defending his views on Occupy Wall Street. “I wasn’t thinking clearly,” he confesses. Most surprising thing about that interview is really Neal Adam's comments, believing that Miller was brought down by believing in his own fame, which lead him to drink excessively?

I’ve thought that there must be some sort of (really slowly) degenerative condition going on behind his appearance and feebleness. It doesn’t seem like just substance abuse. We were both at the same party 12 years ago and even then I was like holy shit he is about to die. He got out of a car with help and then had trouble stepping up onto the curb. Idk how you plant yourself at the verge of death for decades like that, Burroughs is the only other example I can think of.

Burroughs was *always* stooped and kind of hobbling about. Even as a young man - well into his habits - Burroughs appeared 20 years older. And he lived to a grand old age! Miller otoh just looks like death warmed over.

That wasn't a complete final thought: He looks like death warmed over but he didn't look anything like that as a younger man.

Miller's face in that photo is performing some kind of weird perspective illusion where he appears to be looking in two directions at once. Human cubism.

To be honest he looks way better than he did four/five years ago, his declining health was pretty evident back then.

I didn’t read it that way... he seemed to be putting the blame squarely on Miller; and partly on himself, for not “teaching” Miller better (as if it were his responsibility somehow, as a “father figure”).

yeah I read it more as "know the difference between yourself, a person like any other person, and your work, which may well be powerful & have a profound effective on people" - Adams would know, he's a guy whose work had people deifying him early on, but in all fields there's people who really soak that up and get very lost in their own heads as a result.
