I looked up some youtube vids of Julian Lage and I can't say they grabbed me. I'm kind of averse to acoustic jazz guitar though, other than Django.

Aram Bajakian is a far more interesting guitarist than Lage, although I won't let the fact he hasn't actually recorded a jazz album in his own name yet stop me interjecting here!

RIP John Abercrombie.

Sad to hear this. A great player who chose to play less instead of more. I´m still getting to know his immense body of work, but my introduction to his music was "Class Trip" with Mark Feldman on violin - and it´s great. I was lucky to see him in Rotterdam, The Netherlands with this particular band around the time they released "Wait Till You See Her". I hope ECM will continue their rerelease schedule of his records (many records for other small labels are out of print) and that they will release a live DVD at one point.

RIP. Often recommend his trio alb Timeless (w/ Jack DeJohnette and Jan Hammer) to ppl looking for something in a similarly silent way to electric Miles.

I really like the live stuff I have by the Gateway trio from the 70s. I have i think the 2nd studio lp somewhere too buut haven't played it much.
That's also him with the Stark Reality isn't it? They're pretty great.

I remember seeing him during a slew of the "electric jazz fusion" band days...RTF, Abercrombie, Ralph Towner. Abercrombie's ECM dates are still favorites. RIP

I've been listening to him all day and wondering why I never listened to him more beforehand.

The book with sheet music "Timeless: The Music of John Abercrombie" mentions that he played on more than 240 albums. It´s a great resource for guitar players as he explains how he approaches composition and soloing. He was indeed a member of Stark Reality.

I´m also very fond of this album, where he sounds great. A nice combination of early Miles Davis lyricism and post-Bitches Brew grooves.

Abercrombie tears shit up on Enrico Rava's Katcharpari from 1973, which was just remastered by the MPS label. It's a very Jack Johnson/On the Corner-ish album, and Abercrombie's guitar playing is ferocious.

Ooh need to check this out. I always thought he was kind of a slept on guitarist in hipper jazz circles although he has had some commercial success.

That´s correct. There are 32 tunes from his entire career, from "Timeless" to "Within A Song" + a discography. It also features some alternative chord voicings heard on record but not listed in the lead sheets. You´ll learn about his obsession with minor flat six chords that imply the aeolian mode.

I may have mentioned that he took over for Ted after Ted died and I had a semester of lessons with him. He was a very nice guy and a good teacher but I was in a really bad emotional place at the time and couldn't absorb much. I did gain one very useful lesson from him, which was to think about setting up your next improvisational moves on the neck of the guitar the way a pool player sets up for his next shot.
