Hadn't known how long WLS even existed, Tarfumes, or if it still did.

Yeah, WLS-AM is all-talk now, but it was the big midwest top 40 powerhouse from the early '60s through the late '80s. In retrospect, it was kind of an amazing station: "top 40" meant the top 40 from 195? to the present. You could literally hear Buddy Holly, the Temptations, Prince, and Grandmaster Flash inside of an hour.

On the plus side, it championed local heroes (Cheap Trick's "So Good To See You," Off Broadway's "Stay In Time"); on the minus side, it championed local heroes (Styx' Paradise Theater singles every goddamn hour).

the youtube thing is interesting because i assumed that someone employed by either Prince or his publisher or his legal team was employed to take down this stuff or had it automated to some degree, the same way unauthorized youtubes of new releases just get taken down automatically 24/7. i guess this just means that whoever was doing it stopped getting paid to do so the moment he died?

some dude, Sunday, 1 May 2016 00:22 (seven years ago) link

Or he did it himself?

albvivertine, Sunday, 1 May 2016 00:33 (seven years ago) link

I should probably take this to Prince.org, but the way he died has got me really bummed. Wasn't there anyone close to him who knew what was going on? To think of him alone in that elevator, it's just too sad

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 1 May 2016 00:37 (seven years ago) link

yep it's a good thing I don't have too much to do this weekend because I've already got about nine hours worth of VHS rips of Prince live gigs from 1981-1987 in different tabs

watching 30 seconds of each to figure out where to start is futile, different synth & bass riffs added to the outros of nearly any tune I check out

Lol.

Meaning I did something similar, just not quite so many tabs.

Is that the Brit Awards from 2006? If so, I don't remember posting or seeing it posted, but know I've watched it a couple of times.

I'm sure I've said this before, but I was listening to 'Let's Pretend We're Married' earlier, and that track strikes me as very Gary Numan in its melody and the use of the Simmons Claptrap, which Numan was using a lot at that time, particularly on I, Assassin.

Turrican, Sunday, 1 May 2016 17:41 (seven years ago) link

Claptrap or ... Synare?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 1 May 2016 17:55 (seven years ago) link

I'm 100% sure it's a Simmons Claptrap... it's a pretty distinctive sound!

Turrican, Sunday, 1 May 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

Wendy, Lisa, Mark, Fink and Bobby just posted a group video saying they're gonna do a tour as the revolution

love all these people but how are they gonna deal with the gigantic hole in the middle of those songs...? maybe they can get D'Angelo onboard.

Have you seen this 2012 reunion video yet? Works pretty well. The five mentioned plus Dez and Eric Leeds.

yeah i think i'd rather just see the band cover the vocals than throw a star in there as a ringer for a Velvet Revolver vibe

some dude, Sunday, 1 May 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

lol at Velvet Revolver

The WLS National Batdance (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 May 2016 21:25 (seven years ago) link

Sound is messed up on the second part of that.

The WLS National Batdance (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 May 2016 22:22 (seven years ago) link

Oh wait, during the benefit presentation there must be some sort of cheap mic setting, but when the music starts you can hear a click and then it sounds better again.

The WLS National Batdance (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 May 2016 22:25 (seven years ago) link

Duh, guess video and audio are different sources.

The WLS National Batdance (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 May 2016 22:26 (seven years ago) link

God, is 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man' just the most perfect song, and superbly sung too. A lot of people have commented on his obviously excellent guitar playing, and his arranging skills, and I think Alfred mentioned his keyboard work, but nobody ever talks about his voice.

Turrican, Sunday, 1 May 2016 23:25 (seven years ago) link

There's little I like more than Prince's self-harmonizing. He just knew innately where and how vocals should go. And had the chops to get there, too. D'Angelo seems to have the gist as well, but when he does it I still have trouble hearing anything but someone trying to do Prince (and I love D'Angelo). It's like singing well in and of itself is shorthand for imitating Prince.

I remember when Mark Sandman died, and Morphine toured the final album handling the vocals mostly in-house, with a couple of extra folks, and it sounded great.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 1 May 2016 23:30 (seven years ago) link

watching all these clips on youtube i'm realizing now that my fav thing prince does, is his little 'woo' he hollers out in some songs when he gets real excited before shit really pops off.

ugh i remember reading this in march and i'm so sad we'll never get to read it...

After watching that whole reunion show, changed my mind and think that maybe they do need a ringer like that.

Also, if only all these nu youtube postings had an expiration date posted so we would know in which order to watch them

The City Lights series of soundboard recordings from the various tours is amazing--I had never really heard Dirty Mind shows and they are absolutely sick! Lots of guitar workouts...

God, is 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man' just the most perfect song

yesssssssssssss

niels, Monday, 2 May 2016 13:18 (seven years ago) link

also, is that thing abt Sometimes... being recorded 21st april 1985 verified? it's blowing my mind

also, that While My Guitar solo... it's not Prince's most important statement as an artist, but it is undoubtedly a cosmic event - and in a few minutes it shows a lot of the incredible talents and idiosyncrasies that made Prince unique... and it sounds soooo good

niels, Monday, 2 May 2016 13:21 (seven years ago) link

I think I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man has my favorite Prince guitar solo, Purple Rain second. Does it kind of seem like there might be a longer version of ICNTTPOYM somewhere? Remember being slightly underwhelmed by the SOTT-dvd live version but probably just bcz studio version is perfection.

niels, Monday, 2 May 2016 13:23 (seven years ago) link

according to princevault.com, which lists the recording dates/studio session notes for every track, yes

you know what album is a kinda underrated, "lost" outlier in his catalog is "The Truth". I don't think I'd ever listened closely to the entire thing and while it has some clunkers it's charmingly low-key, doesn't feel like his other stuff from the same period really.

Οὖτις, Monday, 2 May 2016 15:57 (seven years ago) link

yeah I really like it. kinda like a "what if prince did mtv unplugged" exercise

after this past week's revelations I can't keep waiting for the ICNTTPOYM solo to segue into Don't Stop Believing... but that doesn't make it any less great

Two words for the DEA investigating where prince got his drugs over the decades.... Arsenio Hall (AKA Prince's and Eddie Murphy's bitch) Anyone imagining prince was not a long time hard drug user is living in cloud cuckoo land. Arsenio I've reported you to the Carver County Sherrif's office. Expect their call. They are aware you spiked me years ago at Eddie murphy's house. You best get tidying your man cave.
