Already-reissued vinyl titles -- 1999, PR -- getting enthusiastic thumbs-ups from the kids at the Steve Hoffman forums.

Occurred to me that Revolution/outside musicians or no, diamonds and pearls may be the first of his records that sounds like it was recorded with a traditional band. Don't know what to make of that.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 April 2016 15:32 (eight years ago) link

it sounds like that because that's what it is

in approx 2001 i bought a new vinyl copy of Purple Rain from Beat Street in Brooklyn, and it had the OG sticker on the front touting the singles, plus the actual poster inside. it was regular price, like $7.99. how is that possible??

I've come around to agree w/Prince about Lovesexy vs. the Black Album. Not that I think it's too "dark" or "negative", but it really doesn't cohere or hang together very well, and the tracks are more amorphous jams than songs, there's very little that feels structured or thought out. It *sounds* great and I love a lot of it, "Bob George" especially, but Lovesexy is superior in every way while still being sonically of a piece, it just has better songs.

listening to "Insatiable," it strikes me that it's a straighter – in every sense – and duller "Adore."

Ha, for a split second, I though that was Rob Tyner.

guess it explains the "I Can't Make You Love Me" cover

well, that and the fact that it's a beautiful song

George Michael did a good vers too

Neanderthal, Friday, 29 April 2016 22:26 (eight years ago) link

it's basically the adult version of "will you love me tomorrow"

wizzz! (amateurist), Friday, 29 April 2016 22:27 (eight years ago) link

(well, actually, the adult version of "will you love me tomorrow" is "will you love me tomorrow", but you get my drift)

wizzz! (amateurist), Friday, 29 April 2016 22:28 (eight years ago) link

Now playing the widely renowned 'small club 2nd show that night' and god damn that clav-like synth on DMSR is just the driest sickest chicken scratch sound I've ever heard

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Friday, 29 April 2016 22:29 (eight years ago) link

It's an aftershow from the lovesexy tour. Great sound.

well, that and the fact that it's a beautiful song

Buy her new album -- it's terrific.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 April 2016 22:34 (eight years ago) link

Hmm the arrangement d'angelo played of sometimes it snows in April is the demo arrangement not the released arrangement, isn't it? That long three part vocal intro...

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 30 April 2016 13:40 (eight years ago) link

NM I am an idiot. I somehow forgot the released version has that intro too. Weird that I never focused on it til now. It's a daring and gorgeous way to open the track.

Reading that article about this crazy new musical concept & then listening to the well meaning but rote "Baltimore" is a bit of a let down...I really wish he'd never gotten involved with 3rdEyeGirl that band was terrible and brought out his worst tendencies

the lead guitar line in Baltimore is so great

Youtube keeps pushing this "Prince in the 1980s" doc which I finally watched this morning. Nothing earthquaking, but some good interviews with former managers, bandmates, engineers and arrangers.

I skimmed over three or four of the 'Fork reviews by All of the Usual Suspects, and I was pretty disappointed to encounter All of the Usual points. I was hoping for something fresh, but they read like ... reviews. I guess that's fine. Chalk them up as missed opportunity sacrificed to the god of news cycle deadlines.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 30 April 2016 16:30 (eight years ago) link

douglas wolk's paragraph about "kiss" is like a master class in great music writing imo, come on, not to mention maura drawing all of 1999 through the lens of apocalypse

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 April 2016 16:40 (eight years ago) link

His wasn't one of the three or four I looked at and I was reluctant to say anything specific, pro or con, about ILXOR regulars. But I'm not convinced drawing an album whose lead title track is about the apocalypse, written, recorded and released in the lingering age of nuclear apocalypse, through the lens of the apocalypse, is terribly novel. I'm also not convinced the essay does that successfully.

Had no problems with the quality of the writing, I should stress.

xpost If I could go back in time and see any era of Prince live, I think right now I'd say "Controversy" tour.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 30 April 2016 16:45 (eight years ago) link

I think I read 1999, Nelson George on SOTT (nothing new there), and Light's Around the World (natch; thought his Purple Rain book was sort of nothing new, too).

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 30 April 2016 16:47 (eight years ago) link

idk I feel like it informs the urgency and anxiety of the rest of the record. I think that's a good framing/interpretive lens

Anyone heard/have this massive "1986: A Year in the Life" Prince boot?

I can't find it (the box itself or the answer).

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 30 April 2016 17:56 (eight years ago) link

The Linn LM-1 came out in the early part 'o' 1980, and was used on The Human League's Dare, which as we all know came out in 1981. The LM-1 was the precursor to the LinnDrum and didn't sound tinny at all.
