Making your own furniture: seems like a great idea but probably is harder/more expensive than it seems. Anyone ever do this?

Where should I get a couch from. I have an IKEA one that is... vile. But comfortable, I guess! 3-people wide is about the max that my APT can handle and I am not really in need of a fold-out, but I guess at this point in my life I have enough friends visiting me that it could prove useful. Would rather not get IKEA; am interested in something reasonably long lasting. Leather is gross.

I now get tons of facebook ads for all these nu-furniture companies like Article, BluDot, Haworth, Dims, Inside Weather, Icons of New York, there seems to be a new one I've never even heard of every other day. Sometimes the stuff looks very nice and sleek and modern but I have no idea about the quality. How do I learn more about these? Is there some reliable publication that reviews them?

Another one just popped up: Castlery. There are so many of these that I'm suspicious that they're all made in the same chinese factory, kind of like Amazon's "clothing brands."

xp - Article seems to be one of the more popular/better known of these brands, so there are some reviews out there. I have read some quality complaints -- I don't know if it's like "built for life" furniture but seems like maybe better in both quality and design than Ikea and of course pricier.

article has a huge warehouse/office in my neighbourhood so maybe that makes it more tangible/legit seeming to me

This is a nice desk with some cool design features, and it's also $1290. Would I eventually drop that much on a desk? Maybe, if it was something I planned to use for 15 or 20 years. But am I going to spend that much on a desk I can't see in person and know nothing about?

Artifox at least seems to be trying to riff on Artifort. Shame they don’t see to want to rip off the artifort design aesthetic.

One of these came through the accelerator I mentor at a few years ago, BROSA, it’s a supply chain play. Minimal inventory, all digital sales, bundle up enough orders the fill containers and eventually you end up with a showroom as well. Quality seems fine at the price although the materials are questionable. Design looks like it was done by tensorflow that was fed instagram, Pinterest and Houzz and produces nothing that I’d want in my house but I’m not the target market.

joybird had a showroom in downtown Brooklyn, stuff seemed very stylish, comfortable, and good build quality (maybe?).

Thanks for the heads up on Artifort; pricing info seems obscure. More suggestions for mid-century modern/modern furniture are welcome.

Vintage artifort stuff comes up fairly regularly on Pamono, the prices will make your eyes water but cheaper than buying it new. Keep an eye on estate sales and you might get lucky.

We have good friends who did all the wrong things and bought a big new house thinking that their mother/mil would be living with them but then, quickly, discovered that no, she was pretty much impossible to live with. Of course, they had already put a ton of money into their big house, above and beyond any recommended rehab, but you should probably pace that shit out, since it takes a long time for it to pay for itself in added value, if it ever even does. Anyway, it didn't, because they suddenly found themselves with too much house and decided to downsize. Of course, they picked a terrible time to do it, but the house eventually sold a few weeks ago, apparently at a huge loss. Now they're between houses (which is to say, essentially homeless) but are selling some of the stuff they accumulated and/or upgraded to for their premature "forever" home. One item was an absolutely gorgeous solid cherry custom queen-sized bed that they had designed and built for them in the (old) new house. We've been meaning to change out our furniture ourselves, and this bed seemed like a great first step, and it was, not least because our friends sold it to us for $250, which was ... nuts. Still, something nagged at me, so when we were moving it into the van last week I asked our friend, out of curiosity, why are you selling this gorgeous custom bed? Won't you, you know, need a bed when you finally find a house? Wouldn't it make more sense to pay not much to keep it in storage for a couple of months? Oh, he told me, we wanted to upgrade to a kingsize bed, he told me.

And these are not big people.

The tl;dr version is that some people just never learn and are super frivolous/irresponsible with their money, but we at least got a beautiful bed out of it, because they sold us their custom cherry-wood queen for no good reason for less than the cost of a PS4.

This was the most comfortable chair, but I broke it many years ago doing a flying bodyslam into it, which was my preferred seating entry method.
The underlying seat and back supports seemed to be stretched canvas where you'd normally expect wooden slats.

Are these one and the same of the chairs that are in every college dorm common era ever?

ah no I should have looked more carefully. Dorm common area chairs were all wood frame, more-or-less-indestructible woven cushions. In blue or maroon.

It must have been some type of sling chair but it was very sturdy and must have had a bar where the seat meets the back.
So there must have been two separate canvas components to allow for give, but not too much deformation.

Oof, this is tough. There are so, so many midcentury-ish chairs out there. I don't suppose you have any photos where the chair is visible, even if it's not the subject?

The chair unfortunately exists only in my spotty memory.

I feel like this is an answerable question, but you might need some REAL furniture nerds, retired dealers, etc, to say "oh yeah used to stock this one back in the day, lot of QC issues, never did get a build that could take a body-slam," etc.

so much "suburban parent" furniture is sadly in that category. huge overstuffed recliners just waiting for me to flop into them, as I wish I could afford and had the space for an Eames lounge chair + ottoman to get the same effect in a form I like.

Sadly my vote is the giant overstuffed easy chairs that Barnes & Noble made popular. Very cushy and womblike with room to sit sideways. They're enormous and ugly but you can really nest in them.
