xpost: this. It's why I was so startled at the absence of a will.

me too.
surely his lawyer crew must have said something in the last couple of years.
i cannot imagine he had not been urged to crack on with getting something sorted.
maybe, just maybe, he thought : "f*ck it, you can sort it all out, i'm too busy to think about all that stuff, i got some tracks to make".

(nb : as a old man/parent sideline - sort your will out people, we avoided doing ours for years, but bloody hell, it was a good job we did eventually get it sorted when we did.)

the second child they lost was a miscarriage

prince's longtime set designer heather mcelhatton was interviewed on mpr and she said something interesting, that prince before the death of his son and prince after the death of his son were like night and day. He apparently became super attentive in the aftermath to knowing the names of everyone who worked for him and knowing things about their lives, asking them questions about themselves etc.

i guess we will never know what kind of changes that experience produced in him. certainly it must point the way to the JW conversion?

that shit is totally traumatic, of course he was changed by it

my wife said she hopes there is a hologram of Prince in the vault doing the Batdance

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:15 (eight years ago) link

Mayte's statement the day he died ("he's with our son now") was just heartbreaking.

some dude, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:24 (eight years ago) link

As others have said, eye'm really surprised that Prince never had a will, given how on the button he seemed in terms 'o' his business affairs. Eye have 2 say, there's a lot that's come out over the last few days that has stunned and surprised me. In a way, it often feels like at times there's this strange "big reveal" going on which eye'm unsure that eye and others should be privy 2. There's a whole lot 'o' shit flying out 'o' the woodwork. U Tube suddenly being flooded with videos is one thing, but eye can't help but think that a lot 'o' tongues have suddenly become loose in the immediate aftermath 'o' Prince's death. Add 2 this everything being picked over 2 an insane degree and it's all a bit grim. Eye hope all 'o' this gets sorted out as quickly and painlessly as possible. Until then, it's hard 2 imagine Prince will ever rest in peace.

I think we all understand what you're going for here Turrican, but bear in mind it is kinda unreadable.

how's life, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:32 (eight years ago) link

Maybe the Minecraft guy or some richer than god cat like that will just buy everything.

I had no idea the vault was an actual vault.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:33 (eight years ago) link

with a combination that only Prince knew! that blows my mind.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:34 (eight years ago) link

im kinda ambivalent about all the youtube videos. its great for people to see. but its also footage that might secure his future earnings. who knows how much that would be these days, but still... im still shocked and slightly disbelieving that he didnt write a will or any sort of contingency plan.

i wonder what happens to the vault now they have drilled into it. does it all stay there? does it go somewhere else? are they just logging whats there? (selfishly would like to see an actual photo of it).

StillAdvance, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:35 (eight years ago) link

I mean I assumed he had old tape reels appropriately stored away somewhere but that's next level

xp

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:35 (eight years ago) link

im sure i read that he would quite often just dub over old tracks, that he wasnt that precious about them (though the extent to which he stored them all makes me think he must have cared about them). maybe a lot of classic outtakes sound diff to how we know them.

StillAdvance, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:41 (eight years ago) link

xxx-post:

Funnily enough, me neither... eye always thought 'The Vault' was just a name he gave 2 a bog-standard tape archive. Eye kinda like the fact it was an actual vault, though... and 4 Prince 2 be the only person 2 know the combination... just goes 2 show how protective he was 'o' his masters, although it really shouldn't come as a surprise 2 anyone given his actions 2wards WB in the mid '90s!

2rrican (Turrican), Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:41 (eight years ago) link

stuffed fish

I thought this was a jokey comment, but no, a bit of googling later and it turns out Entwistle loved him a stuffed fish.

Presumably notorious trout farmer Roger Daltrey went HAM on them in the auction.

Position Position, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:47 (eight years ago) link

ironically he owes warners for the vault. and PP in general. they paid for it (partly, though prob a lot if not most of it, even prince admitted this i think).

StillAdvance, Thursday, 28 April 2016 17:48 (eight years ago) link

Per future earnings, he had no extended family, he has no children, he has an ex wife and a sister, but that's about it. Anyone and anything that earns for Prince in the future is just free money for someone with no real business with or right to said money. Hendrix had no will, and for decades family/lawyers/people were suing and fighting over his legacy. This seems potentially much, much worse.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:12 (eight years ago) link

i wish someone who cared about and shepherded Prince's career/catalog like Alan Leeds had been granted some kind of control over this stuff but that probably didn't happen.

some dude, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link

i pray that his lawyer lets alan leeds handle it.

StillAdvance, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:18 (eight years ago) link

on that R&RHOF performance:

TOM PETTY (shared lead vocals with Jeff Lynne on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”) Olivia Harrison [George’s widow] asked me if I would come along and induct George. I was told, “Well, Prince is going to play too,” and I was like, “Wow, that’s fantastic.”

Look, we got Prince here willing to play lead guitar. Why should we give him an eight-bar solo? Over a solo that — the Beatles solo, everyone knows it by heart and would be disappointed if you didn’t play that particular solo there. And Prince was a great fan of George’s, and the Beatles in general, but I think he particularly admired George. I think George would have liked it a lot.

I had no sense Prince liked George but whatevs, Tom

He did like George... Clinton, that is.

2rrican (Turrican), Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:24 (eight years ago) link

Somebody must have shielded him from the Geoff Emerick book with all the anti-George stuff.

Radio Free European Son (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:25 (eight years ago) link

never mind harrison, santana, hendrix, or hazel, the real key to princes guitar playing is neal schon.

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/7348372/prince-purple-rain-journey-faithfully-interviews

"How much he loved Neal Schon is crazy," Cain adds. "He studied Neal for so many years, learned his licks and made them his own. You can hear it on ('Purple Rain') for real."

StillAdvance, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:25 (eight years ago) link

In fact, didn't Clinton really like Around The World In A Day?

2rrican (Turrican), Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:26 (eight years ago) link

Schon connection doesn't totally surprise me given Schon's connection to Larry Graham

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:27 (eight years ago) link

connections!

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:27 (eight years ago) link

dunno if it's common knowledge but the swishy bass line on "Sex in the Summer" (off Emancipation) was the sampled heartbeat of his unborn son. Always makes that sweet song sad for me.

ulysses, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:31 (eight years ago) link

Schon is connected to Sheila E. too!

how's life, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:32 (eight years ago) link

Now it can be told, it's not that he can't play lead guitar, of course he can, it's just that he overuses that $&@"?! Journey guitar tone.

Radio Free European Son (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:40 (eight years ago) link

That's cool that he was a Santana and Schon freak

Was reading the prince chapter in 'Keyboard Magazine Presents: Synth Gods' on Google Books today and they wrote that although synth was as important to Prince as guitar, he had no specific synth or keys heroes the way he had Santana, Hazel and Hendrix for guitar.

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:43 (eight years ago) link

i think there's some undeniable Funkadelic influence in Prince's synth work but he was also using the synth a lot in place of where other funk/R&B acts had a horn section

some dude, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:47 (eight years ago) link

Gary Numan seems like the most obvious synth reference point at least early on (he's obviously way beyond Gary as a keyboard player)

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:50 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I did read him express appreciation for numan in some 80s interview or other

otm -- JOdy Rosen brought up this point in Slate's podcast yesterday iirc

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:52 (eight years ago) link

that basically was one of the 2 or 3 core markers of the mpls sound - synths replace brass

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:56 (eight years ago) link

well brass + saxes

u no what eye mean

surprised that geraldo rivera wasn't present when they drilled into prince's vault

wizzz! (amateurist), Thursday, 28 April 2016 18:59 (eight years ago) link

...and all they find were some dusty unused purple condoms and some spare parts to a drum machine.

wizzz! (amateurist), Thursday, 28 April 2016 19:00 (eight years ago) link

and several crates of Appolonia and Nona Gaye long boxes

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 April 2016 19:01 (eight years ago) link

(i wonder if any under-35 ILXORs will get the geraldo rivera joke)

wizzz! (amateurist), Thursday, 28 April 2016 19:02 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, Prince rated Numan highly in the early '80s, and the feeling was mutual if eye recall. 'We Take Mystery (To Bed)' has some Prince-like elements 2 it.

Eye'd avoid the Prince covers Numan did in the early '90s, mind. His version 'o' 'U Got The Look' is fucking terrible.

2rrican (Turrican), Thursday, 28 April 2016 19:03 (eight years ago) link

i think avoiding 1990s gary numan is probably a good idea in general :(

wizzz! (amateurist), Thursday, 28 April 2016 19:05 (eight years ago) link

Numan is really happy playing goth buttrock and I'm glad he's happy but yeah dnw

I don't think anyone should be shocked by any influence on any act. Neil Young swears by Randy Bachman. Does anyone talk about Randy Bachman? Doesn't really matter. I have no doubt Prince was every bit as into George Harrison as he was (Santana era, I assume) Neil Schon or Joni Mitchell. Or, per that above link, Billy Gibbons or anyone else.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 April 2016 20:17 (eight years ago) link

I got it, too, even if I flashed on an old Bloom County strip en route to getting it.
