I'm gonna have to read that new yorker article because I've been hearing everybody fron ilx to my boss at work telling me "tmz actually gets things right a lot of the time" but every time I read about them, it's because they were on some fact-distorting bullshit. Who knows maybe I'm wrong.

it's hard to get things wrong when you say "person X who is Y told us Z" and then state further down "other source A said B, which contradicts the former sentence, and person X said that in 1909 so we might be wrong idk"

Learned the other day that P payed $70 - 80,000 for Clyde Stubblefield's cancer treatments a few years back, but kept it quiet (for JW reasons I guess?).

we had a client meeting out in chanhassan today and my coworkers ended up driving past paisley park & they figured there was still 100-200 ppl out there, and it's kinda overcast and intermittently sprinkling today

I've read about a few charitable organizations he apparently had a lot larger role in than previously publicized. A lot of people keep a low profile with that, but the JW restriction made things even more under the radar.

more details:

The probate court has not identified an executor, and estimates of Prince’s net worth and of the value of his estate have varied widely. Forbes magazine last estimated his earnings in 2005, when it said that he made $49.7 million before taxes that year.

But Prince’s worth could be much greater now, particularly since two years ago he took control of his valuable publishing catalog — the copyrights for songwriting — and negotiated a favorable new deal with Warner Bros., his former record company. Since his death, Prince has sold at least 650,000 albums and 2.8 million tracks in the United States, according to Nielsen.

Beyond his music, Prince, who was born Prince Rogers Nelson, owned extensive property in the Minneapolis area. Its value is unclear, but Paisley Park, his studio complex in the suburb of Chanhassen, Minn., has been assessed at over $7 million, according to Carver County public records.

love all these people but how are they gonna deal with the gigantic hole in the middle of those songs...? maybe they can get D'Angelo onboard.

i listened to "Kevin Smith Talks About Prince" last night. saw it way back in the day but forgot all about it and wanted to revisit it. good god, it makes Kevin Smith out to sound like a complete jerk. he's basically just talking shit about Prince behind his back, making fun of how small he is, taking the job (Prince hired him to make a documentary on an album) not all seriously, complaining the whole time that Prince isn't baby-stepping him through it, and then at the very end of it all getting all pissed off that when he was leaving Prince didn't STOP RECORDING MUSIC to say goodbye to Kevin Smith.

seriously, Kevin Smith is a jackass.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 21:46 (eight years ago) link

would be cool if Kevin Smith had died instead of Prince imo

maybe it'll be like that scene in "true stories" where each audience members takes one or two lines of each song?

I thought he didn't seem dickish at all. And neither did Prince. People are going to react to working with Prince differently. I don't think he was pissed that Prince didn't stop recording music - he was pissed that he did a bunch of work for free and flew his family out for the holiday and that Prince didn't seem grateful or appreciative that he put in the effort. I think it was a dick way to end the story I guess - as opposed to something along the lines of "s'all good bc I wouldn't have traded the experience for anything" which would have been most people's reactions.

Honestly when I saw the length of the video I thought there was no way I was gonna make it to the 5 minute mark, but it's a pretty thoroughly interesting story and he does a great job telling it.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 22:06 (eight years ago) link

I don't think he was pissed that Prince didn't stop recording music

he says he was actually in the car ready to leave without saying goodbye. then his wife said something about saying bye to Prince and he changes his mind, decides to say goodbye before he leaves. by the time he is back at Paisley Park, Prince is recording music. to me that sounds like he's upset Prince didn't drop what he was doing on a dime to thank him that moment.

he was pissed that he did a bunch of work for free

then he shouldn't be an idiot that says he will do a bunch of work without a signed contract or some legal framework. he had a crew and camera with film stock working for like a week. this is basic business stuff, it just makes Smith sound like an amateur.

Yeah, the guy was huge 4 longer than people seem 2 think, which is why when eye read comments about Prince being an "'80s phenomenon", eye find myself scratching my head.

It's often 4gotten 2 that Prince won Best International Male at the 1996 Brit Awards - yes, at the height 'o' Britpop at the same ceremony that Jarvis Cocker wiggled his arse at Michael Jackson. He also per4med the title track 'o' Emancipation at the 1997 awards, 2. Eye don't remember him being as visible after that, though... not until his newspaper giveaways, at least... but he was still a big deal in the UK in 1994 thru 1997.

WHERE'S JIM!? (Turrican), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 23:19 (eight years ago) link

It's my impression that Prince was a huge deal esp in NW Europe from mid 80s onwards. Holland, Belgium, Sweden etc.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 23:23 (eight years ago) link

just in terms of marketing, his post-symbol album stuff was not really well supported in the US

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 23:24 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I remember the first time i heard "My Ding-a-ling" was on the American chart rundown on RLuxembourg (Bob Stewart, probably) and I had no idea who it was: I thought it was Ernie off the Muppets.

the claims of intense opiate dependency and over the top stage fright are blowing my mind.. i dont know how to process them.

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 23:28 (eight years ago) link

both of those are pretty commonly shared by millions of people maybe process it by saying oh hey Prince got butterflies in his stomach like anyone else

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 23:39 (eight years ago) link

on the shyness tip there is his very first US TV interview, from American Bandstand 1979:

i think that's the hard part to process tho. prince seemingly wasn't like anyone else in any way

dynamicinterface, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 23:56 (eight years ago) link

No, WB was still in charge 'o' Prince in the UK when he was with the label. He legendarily refused 2 promote Chaos and Disorder but it still went Top 20 in the UK and 'Dinner With Delores' was a Top 40 hit. Eye remember the video 4 'Dinner With Delores' getting a lot 'o' play on the music channels at the time. The guy was still selling records even at that time.

WHERE'S JIM!? (Turrican), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 00:02 (eight years ago) link

yah no doy people suffer from stage fright and opiate dependency except this person was always running around dancing like a crazy man and on stage 10 hours a night.

interesting about the stage fright. Olivier devloped it at *60* years old.
