Yeah, I really liked it. Pretty well done. I wish they would have explained the album's title though.

I think it's a combination of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souvlaki and this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_station

The 'Space Station' part is a reference to a much-lovedstudio effect unit.

As for the first part, Slowdive were Jerky Boys fans.

the Minor Victories album is out on Friday and it's pretty great imo

StanM, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 16:34 (seven years ago) link

It is! I liked it halfway after the first listen but the second pulls it all together, even the Mark Kozelek guest appearance. There's also a fantastic duet with the guy from Twilight Sad, whose vibe is similar.

Really love "Breaking My Light" - brings to mind Blonde Redhead and Delgados respectively.

OK I finally figured out what the new Slowdive song reminded me of. Basically a faster take on this similar melody:

I wouldn't go as far as you guys, but it was an excellent effort, enough to get me genuinely excited about the prospect of another new LP.

imago, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

it's easily better than the first album.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:52 (three years ago) link

If I overstate, it's not by much. I'm defining 'comeback' as a new release after 10+ years. I was not one of those impressed with the MBV comeback. The new Psychedelic Furs is very good but not even close to Slowdive. I guess Scott Walker's "Tilt" qualifies, that's a strong choice. What else would you consider contending for the title?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:56 (three years ago) link

a tribe called quest for one :)

i loved m b v as well, but yeah

imago, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link

i saw them on the initial 2014 tour, which was pre-new material. i never saw them in the classic period, obviously, but it was a right fine show. and i've talked to folks who saw them in 1993 and then again in 2014 and all of them preferred the 2014 shows.

the atcq "reunion" album was a q-tip solo record that just happened to heavily feature members of the group. it was okay, at best.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:09 (three years ago) link

Portishead's Third is up there for comeback albums too

octobeard, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

yes, absolutely agreed.

Quite by chance I'm wearing my 1992 Slowdive tour shirt today (still looks great and I can still fit in it, both key). The early 90s shows were great but generally they were playing opening slots or very small shows in sometimes inapposite venues. The reunion shows felt like they finally had the huge crowds they well deserved as well as the space to really go to town on the older songs, properly vast.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:23 (three years ago) link

The reunion show I saw was sold out but not much bigger than the venue they'd previous played here in the early '90s, even with a draw like Low (!) opening.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

Black Messiah up there on that comeback list too.

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:36 (three years ago) link

no no, you misunderstand: we're talking best comebacks.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 19:21 (three years ago) link

Yes, yes. But there's a new Simon Scott album coming out.

djh, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 19:44 (three years ago) link

Oh, sorry! Thought we were just talking about comebacks in general. Never mind!

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 19:55 (three years ago) link

we should probably circle back around to Slowdive at some point?
