Is Tim doing something straight faced for once or is the humor so subtle that it's essentially nonexistent? Check out this super legit tune:

Heidecker's music has always been legit. Even when he's totally goofing. Who knows where the serious/goofing line is with that dude. But he's great. Hasn't he done some stuff with Aimee Mann? I know they're friends and that they go on hikes together, at the very least.

I mentioned this in one of the campaign threads but I believe I read that he mentioned Trump being his direct inspiration for the Decker character.

His Robert Pollard impersonation is pretty spot-on:

His new record is very good. I'll put it this way, you forget you're listening to Tim Heidecker. It's not hacky at all, he's really evolved as a songwriter. I'm going to see him next week and now I'm actually excited to see the music half of the show as well.

I posted this in the On Cinema thread, but it's sweet to hear NPR's Scott Simon loving this music:

NPR's Scott Simon talks to Tim Heidecker about his music, his new sentimental album 'High School' and about his sometimes crass comedy. https://t.co/W7tgIw34QQ

sure but this part kinda misses the point

There's a bit from another song, "What Did We Do With Our Time?" [that's] been playing over and over in my head. Let me ask you if you've been going through that at moments of great success and challenge, just sort of thinking, "My God, where did the time go?"

the song is actually about trying to figure out what exactly you did all day back then, which IMO is a way more interesting concept

Unfortunately his serious music isn’t my thing. But I love the Yellow River Boys album more than is probably healthy.

haha same. "Hot Piss" has become a road trip staple for me.

His serious stuff never clicked with me either. It's generally very matter of fact lyrics and basic folk rock. I usually need some kind of extra spice to get hooked. Glad he's finally getting some real traction and acclaim though.

The guitar solo on “Hot Piss Drinker” is exactly as big, dumb and awesome as it needs to be.

I got that impression more with the last one (which I also liked), what with a dozen studio musicians and Weyes Blood on nearly every track. idk there's kind of an interesting discussion here, with a band like say Ween the appeal is that they were much more talented dudes than their music would sometimes let on. people would go on and on about how they're as good as anyone but when they do go totally straight (see: Gene's solo record) their fans tend to always be a bit lukewarm on it. and of course that's what makes the Yellow River Boys record so good, it's such a stupid idea but it's executed beautifully. I think the songs here are just as good or even better, just without that extra spice as Evan puts it. But obviously that is kind of a big deal, since taking this at face value it's a pretty good record but it's in a style that isn't really popular anymore. I don't know who's even making music like this in 2022.

the lyrical concept works for me though, part of it is looking back but the more interesting bit is the feeling of not really being able to identify with your former self anymore. it's kind of a unique record since Tim apparently always wanted to be a musician but fell into comedy instead, and wound up being really really great at it (a real life Happy Gilmore situation), so in a way this album is written like something to impress his teenage self that he's looking back upon. idk I think that's kinda neat

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 18:59 (one year ago) link

Saw him last night, it was a lot of fun. He does a cover of “Lenny Bruce” by Bob Dylan which has some of the worst lyrics I’ve ever heard in my life.

frogbs, Friday, 22 July 2022 22:36 (one year ago) link

that song is hilarious

“I rode with him in a taxi once, only for a mile and a half,
Seemed like it took a couple of months.”
