oh god Neutral Milk Hotel otm

i was camping w/some pals and someone started playing songs from Aeroplane (<--- I understand that this is embarrassing on its own) and this dude was like 'hey who is that i'd like to check them out' and i was genuinely embarrassed to give him the name :-/

Has no one said TV On The Radio yet? I've actively sought out albums, put them on, pondered them for 1minute 30 seconds then thought "But they're called 'TV on the' fucking 'Radio'" and switch them off in disgust.

yea tv on the radio is pretty terrible, tho i like the band

Margot & the Nuclear So and So's

Tries so hard and falls so flat. Hootie & the Blowfish is a better name.

Gay Dad have the disadvantage of not seeming for a second like a band one would be missing out on by avoiding because of their name.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I realize this is true of lots of others named here, but Gay Dad even more so.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:31 (fifteen years ago) link

is there actually someone named Margot in Margot & the Nuclear So and So's? still a terrible name, but much more terrible if there isn't ...

tylerw, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago) link

In reality, the band is called Margot after Gwyneth Paltrow's character in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums.

the best thing about gay dad was their name.

any band that is called something like The Shunts or The Houses or The Bikeracks or anything stupid like that.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:42 (fifteen years ago) link

it just gets worse...

Pre Margot
Richard Edwards was in a band during his college years called Archer Avenue (named after the street where the characters in The Royal Tenenbaums lived).

ANY band named after a Smiths song (I mean come on..). I generally have a hard time with bands named after other bands' songs or albums. It just seems half-assed. It took me a long time to accept Eric's Trip b/c of this. I probably would have had a problem with Radiohead too, except for that I was unaware of the TH song until well after I was already a RH stan.

Until the CD reissues came out, I completely ignored The Lines and also The Sound because I could never remember their humdrum names. Who knew that they created so much jaw-droppingly splendid music? Too bad about those names, though.

i dismissed death cab for cutie on the basis id assumed they were another landfill emo band. I then was convinced by a friend who i usually trust on these matters to investigate their music. At which point I dismissed then for being a load of old smug wet toss.

At the moment loads of germans making perfectly good house music are causing dance musics collective skin to crawl over their need to stick 'motor city detroit deep afro soul' minstrel crap in their names

straightola, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 09:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I missed out on mclusky for years, because I convinced myself they sounded like Hefner. Who I have never knowingly heard because of their name.
