I've been completely caning this all week, definitely prefer it to the first one. It's such a *tactile* house record, the basslines purr rather than boom, the textures brush past you, I can't imagine hearing it and not wanting to dance (and dance with someone at that).

"kiburu's" is amazing

was really surprised to read the lukewarm reviews after listening

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 8 April 2016 14:33 (eight years ago) link

i love this record. the reviews are lukewarm????

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 8 April 2016 14:50 (eight years ago) link

it does get better and better in its second half, the first few are a bit "eh, more of the same" but by the time it gets to "blush" it's fully blissful

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 8 April 2016 15:10 (eight years ago) link

i heard a couple tracks the other day, for whatever wasn't feeling it, but listening to it straight through now it is really good, "paradisea" is beautiful

marcos, Friday, 8 April 2016 15:35 (eight years ago) link

this is great! i'm liking it much more than music for the uninvited.

map, Friday, 8 April 2016 19:35 (eight years ago) link

i should go back to that one, kind of feel like i wasn't into it at the time because i was listening to too much stuff like it? idk. that album is a blur to me, this is already sounding more distinct.

map, Friday, 8 April 2016 19:39 (eight years ago) link

two years pass...

I'm finding the new album to be beautiful and also kinda dull.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 15 June 2018 04:02 (five years ago) link

The new one is an incredible headphones record, so much texture and detail everywhere.

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2018 11:56 (five years ago) link

its cool but i like his 4/4 stuff better because im a 4/4 stuff kind of guy

Sad Dad House (Thee Macallan 18 Year), Friday, 22 June 2018 20:38 (five years ago) link

this is a huge disappointment coming after Rojus, easy to admire but hard to enjoy

boxedjoy, Sunday, 24 June 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link

huh that's weird, i think it's a lot more fun than the concept suggests

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Sunday, 1 July 2018 14:31 (five years ago) link

anyway i love it

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Sunday, 1 July 2018 14:31 (five years ago) link

I don't admire the concept as much as I admire the technical accomplishments of it - how good it sounds, the reach of feeling it's trying to convey; you can really tell that it's both laboured-over and sincere. But it's also just really unengaging.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 1 July 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link

two weeks pass...

I came to the new one looking for Rojus-style bangers and got something a bit abstract, not sure about it possibly sounds better on headphones as Matt DC said

what is this concept that you speak of?

one month passes...

new album is exceedingly gorgeous--matt dc otm about headphone listening. he does a great job foregrounding the modern classical and ambient aspects that have always been hiding within his work, while still making something that is still recognizable as house music.

uhhhhhhhhh guys vynehall's dj kicks is the fucking bomb

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 12:06 (five years ago) link

Yeah I listened to it last night and it's incredible, he covers so much ground without every really breaking the spell. I love that it takes 17 tracks before you hear a 4/4 house kick and yet almost everything before it is amazing, and feels like a coherent mix rather than a half-arsed compilation. The final jungle/IDM section is the only bit I could happily lose.

I'd never heard 'Set Me Free' by The Bygraves before and what a song.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 14:00 (five years ago) link

it is excellent - I have trouble picturing someone actually paying money for a DJ Kicks album in 2019 but def worth hearing in some manner

this is my pick from it, late 80s private Canadian AOR synthpop

Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 16:42 (five years ago) link

it's aight

kinda boring ... "subtle" as mike skinner would say

the late great, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

That’s not wrong but it’s also true of most of the commercially released house dj mixes I have enjoyed over the past few years (e.g. Call Super, Midland, DJ Seinfeld).

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:07 (five years ago) link

So maybe the problem is me. But anyway this rules.

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:07 (five years ago) link

subtle and boring are good

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:08 (five years ago) link

printing this post to show my wife

||||||||, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:10 (five years ago) link

i would not call the call super fabric mix boring or subtle but would agree on the other two!

the late great, Thursday, 7 February 2019 00:12 (five years ago) link

i actually did like this mix well enough but was not blown away

the late great, Thursday, 7 February 2019 00:13 (five years ago) link

oh i really love this lol

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:17 (five years ago) link

appeals directly to the hard-yet-intuitive genre-switching mix maker in me

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:18 (five years ago) link

hard in what sense?

the late great, Thursday, 7 February 2019 03:18 (five years ago) link

mostly just talking about the breadth of the selection. confusingly-worded sentence/idea

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 03:20 (five years ago) link

I'm intrigued enough to probably get this mix, but am cautious after being very disappointed by the Koze DJ Kicks, which was similarly beloved for its eclectic tracklisting, genre-hopping, and loose mixing. It seems pretty unfair to automatically compare them because they're part of the same series, which I suppose is me asking if people like this for reasons they liked the Koze one (for what it's worth I love the Call Super fabric in its eclectic, loose-mixed genre hops).

ed.b, Thursday, 7 February 2019 03:35 (five years ago) link

i would not call this loosely mixed

the late great, Thursday, 7 February 2019 03:51 (five years ago) link

Rare, Forever is out today. sounding really cool so far as you'd expect.

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 30 April 2021 17:16 (two years ago) link

damn, this album just sounds great w/ headphones, as you'd expect

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 01:16 (two years ago) link

Yep, this is fantastic. Is it reductive to say that it's like a better version of the last Floating Points (solo) album?

Tim F, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 08:17 (two years ago) link

very much enjoying this, but i don't really hear the comparison to floating points' crush (though it's certainly a lot better)

ufo, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 12:37 (two years ago) link

Perhaps more accurate to say it's what I wanted Crush to sound like.

Tim F, Thursday, 6 May 2021 00:28 (two years ago) link

that i get
