oh yeah anything with "Wolf" in the title
― yes threads (country matters), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link
apart from "Wolf Eyes" because they were the first one I knew about and they blew my 17 year-old brain to bits
Crystal Antlers are great and better than those other bands (judgment based entirely on the one show we played with them - haven't heard their recorded output)

for a long time one reason i didn't get into radiohead was their name. most bands have stupid names these days. and make crap music. coldplay anyone? what kind of name is clouddead? arctic monkeys i have never listened to (is their name supposed to be funny?) but i don't think i missed something. as mentioned upthread the whitest boy alive is a terrible name. like kings of convenience btw. but kings of convenience at least had some great guitar songs. twba are just plain dull. kings of leon i never listened to 'cause of the name. there must be dozens of others i can't think of right now.

Looking at this thread title I felt an immediate identification with the premise. But now I can't for the life think of an example of this that applies to me, although I know there are a lot.

Retro prog band Wobbler. Maybe they're great, but fucking hell.

more upsetting are bands whose names are dope and then turn out to be garbage
and yeah, jim otm. i felt like i had a grip of terrible band names i hate ready to drop here and now i'm dry

I didn't listen to Fuck Buttons for a long time because their name sounded like some stupid Vice Magazine bullshit. but I'm glad I got over it because I actually really like 'em.

also I think I would've liked Wooden Shjips about 80% more if their name wasn't spelled like that.
(interestingly, this did not keep me from diggin' Wzt Hearts)

Ah, but Fudge Tunnel sound exactly like what you'd expect them to with a name like that,
I too hated the Pooh Sticks for their name. Then I heard their music, and I hated them even more.

I too am on the no-more-animals/black/crystal names anti-bandwagon. Obviously I've made exceptions, but yeah.

Disco Inferno sure have a misleading band name. Wish I'd looked into them a lot sooner.
I always assumed the Deftones were some kind of ska punk band. Was suprised by their actual output.
Was completely put off by the Presets assuming they were hipster shit. Well, they're not far removed from that but they're actually also pretty good.

I avoided Neutral Milk Hotel for years, and still feel embarrassed trying to convince people they should give them a listen.
Never gave Super Furry Animals a thought because of their name. Now kicking self.

A lot of the groups already mentioned are in this thread.
Add: Raccoo-oo-oon, Wildildlife, roughly 99% of all post rock groups with a name containing more than three words, metal groups that sounded like an angry 13 year-old named them (christfucker666 or whatever)... I could go on and on, really.

oh god Neutral Milk Hotel otm
i was camping w/some pals and someone started playing songs from Aeroplane (<--- I understand that this is embarrassing on its own) and this dude was like 'hey who is that i'd like to check them out' and i was genuinely embarrassed to give him the name :-/

Has no one said TV On The Radio yet? I've actively sought out albums, put them on, pondered them for 1minute 30 seconds then thought "But they're called 'TV on the' fucking 'Radio'" and switch them off in disgust.

Margot & the Nuclear So and So's

Gay Dad have the disadvantage of not seeming for a second like a band one would be missing out on by avoiding because of their name.
― Matos W.K., Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:31 (fifteen years ago) link
I realize this is true of lots of others named here, but Gay Dad even more so.
is there actually someone named Margot in Margot & the Nuclear So and So's? still a terrible name, but much more terrible if there isn't ...
― tylerw, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago) link
In reality, the band is called Margot after Gwyneth Paltrow's character in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums.

the best thing about gay dad was their name.
any band that is called something like The Shunts or The Houses or The Bikeracks or anything stupid like that.
― the next grozart, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:42 (fifteen years ago) link
it just gets worse...
Pre MargotRichard Edwards was in a band during his college years called Archer Avenue (named after the street where the characters in The Royal Tenenbaums lived).
