I think one could scrape by as a freelancer by hitting the ILX random thread button, picking a thread and converting it into a wry 500 word social-observation piece.

it's a good point though, nobody but millennials ever grew up with a profound affection for a fictitious white-bearded old man who loves children, particularly the ones who are nice rather than naughty.

in all seriousness it's a dumb meme for sanders, but a kinda okay review of the harry potter series; i've always thought rowling's human villains were pretty good training for kids not to be suckered by the kinds of banal and venal evil they're actually likely to encounter IRL.
Sanders is mathematically eliminated on page 596
― ulysses, Sunday, 3 April 2016 16:45 (eight years ago) link
the harry potter series teaches that only those drawn from the extremely limited pool of students at a hidden, elite private school are worth caring about. in the end the 'heroes' all end up supporting the secretive private government which holds unimaginable power and views the vast majority of the world with contempt.

xxxp I found myself on one of those local interest Facebook pages by accident. Someone was saying about how their kid had been threatened by some other kids in town. The responses, of course, were just as you'd imagine. I'm amazed at how many people believe that society's downfall is directly attributable to children not being clipped round the ear enough. One guy even said: 'I used to get clipped round the ear and it never did me any harm'. He went quiet when I pointed out that clipping someone round the ear is, by definition, a type of harm.

The movie tickets also didn't cost any money, it would seem. I'm beginning to realize how little I know about the utopia that was life in Britain in the 1940s.
