xp parappa the rapper for ps3? It was a port or something?
kick, punch, it's all in the mind
― antexit, Thursday, 10 March 2016 20:54 (eight years ago) link
I'm guessing he meant physical copies of PS1 games. Parappa is only available digitally for PSP/Vita afaik. But Parappa 2 is available for the PS4 in the PS store now, you lucky sumbitches.

No, apparently Parappa 2 is an actual PS2 game I didn't even know existed. Um Jammer Lammy is fantastic, though. So nice I've bought it thrice.

Speaking of, Sony just announced that they've officially stopped producing the Playstation TV. Anyone have one of these? What do you think? Should I get one while the gettin's good? I think I like the idea of playing my Vita games on the TV. But I don't know if it would be more than just a novelty, particularly since not all games are even compatible with it.
as the resident in-house dumbass who buys all the stupid things (you may remember me from such films as "trying to convince myself to buy a 3DS Happy Home Designer bundle to get the smaller New 3DS with the colored buttons"), the Playstation TV feels like a safe one to skip. if I'm going to be playing a video game on my TV it should be something designed to look & feel good on a screen of that size. some of those experiences (hello Spelunky) are exportable to the Vita platform because the Vita is actually a wonderfully powerful piece of hardware which can handle a considerable amount of video game, but most aren't so 9 times out of 10 the Playstation TV brings nothing to the table. I seriously doubt P4 is going to be any more fun played with a DS4 gazing across my living room at a TV than it was on my Vita over the course of a couple dozen airports.

I downloaded Salt & Sanctuary, i.e. 2-D Dark Souls (+Castlevania?). They really released this at the absolute perfect time, didn't they.
― sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 14:03 (eight years ago) link
Man, this is great so far. It actually feels like playing Dark Souls for the first time, in that I am bad and don't exactly know how everything works yet.

― ulysses, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:18 (eight years ago) link
bit of a bummer that it looks just short of copyright infringement tho
― ulysses, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:20 (eight years ago) link
i haven't tried it, but don't most groundbreaking games spawn legions of imitators? didn't the original final fantasy pretty much rip off the most essential features of dragon quest?
― Karl Malone, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:29 (eight years ago) link
it does look cool! kind of shocked when i found out it wasn't by FromSoft, they even have the exact same font for the UI.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 March 2016 17:30 (eight years ago) link
omg the skill tree on salt and sanctuary, this is amazing
― Karl Malone, Friday, 18 March 2016 18:47 (eight years ago) link
no one has mentioned symphony of the night as an influence on salt & sanctuary, probably just because SOFT is an obvious influence on the souls games, but the quality of salt & sanctuary 2-d combat feels pleasingly similar.
― Karl Malone, Friday, 18 March 2016 19:19 (eight years ago) link
i love this game. working on a certain dragon boss, and i think i might be making it hard on myself by sticking with a whip a la Castlevania/Bloodborne. also it seems like this game might turn out to be as long as a real Souls game, which is crazy.

Ok - I too have drank the kool-aid and picked up a '4PS' - my PS3 wasn't getting gaming love, and the Uncharted 4 pushed me over the edge - it is indeed a beautiful game. Picked up Ratchet and Clank too, since that was my first PS3 game, and it's awesome. Super Mega Baseball and Resogun purchased just b/c of this thread. I'm 'mct_rt' on Playstation network ...

Big <$5 flash sale in the PSN store. I mostly just want to stump for the two Jackbox Party Packs because everyone should own them.

thanks for the head's up! i got a few games i've only played on mac with a keyboard (Terraria and Rogue Legacy, which i'm assuming i will be able to do 100x better with a controller), along with super mega baseball & jackbox partypack 1

Another Flash sale. Vita owners may be interested to know that the portable amalgam of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within (whose existence seems to have been very effectively buried) is on sale for like $5.

I think I'll go for Witcher 3 next.

yeah a few times in my flatmate chatted to me while i was playing witcher 3 and i was incredibly embarrassed. that wasn't even during the boning scenes. i was caught between shame and the need to intently watch the cutscenes because i was engrossed in what was happening.

i watched some VR livestreams last night via ps4/twitch and every single game looks fumbly and immensely awkward to control
― the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Friday, 21 October 2016 14:08 (seven years ago) link
played some rail shooter game for a few minutes in gamestop, it was fine i guess. the resolution left something to be desired but was able to get immersed pretty quickly.
i'm not entirely convinced we've figured out what good VR experiences are going to be. much like how the Wii went from standing up and swinging your remote to sitting on the couch and flicking your wrist as little as possible, i think the physical/spatial interactions are just a novelty. cuz of that i think im going to sit out the first and probably second gen of VR

my workplace got a hololens and that's pretty dope though, i can see more legit cool uses for that. the problem with the current dev model is that the "active" is about postcard sized but i imagine that'll be fixed in later iterations

Well, it's like a whole new paradigm, yeah? People who have been gaming for years are used to variations on basically the same controller (some fiddly bits and buttons) + video screen so we're comfortable with that setup and it's relatively easy to adapt from system to system. But if you watch someone with very little gaming familiarity try to navigate that setup, it's like watching an infant learn to walk. I would imagine adjusting to VR is pretty similar.
― CeCe Penistongs (Old Lunch), Friday, 21 October 2016 14:43 (seven years ago) link
certainly, but my impression was that game designers are in the same boat for the most part and are unclear how to best design for the tech.

Mentioned this a bit on the rift and general vr thread, I got one of these and I'm really really loving it, but you just shouldn't trust my opinion of it because I'm a massive nerd for anything 3d. I mean I can still happily lose hours of my life in a viewmaster so vr is just perfect for me. That batman thing is meant to last 30-60 minutes but I've been in there a couple of hours and still haven't even finished a first run through yet because I'll just end up standing around marvelling at the detail on a handrail or whatever.
With that in mind, the things I've loved most so far are yep, Batman. Also Tumble VR because it's just a "build a tall pile of bricks" game but a) it feels hugely tactile and *real*, and b) I've been enjoying "build a tall pile of bricks" since I was 2, it's an all time classic. Also, Rez on this is just as amazing as you'd hope it'd be. And the "Robot Rescue" minigame within the Playroom demoy thing is really amazing too, and needs to become a full game asap.
― JimD, Sunday, 23 October 2016 13:22 (seven years ago) link
I havent tried VR yet but agree that Build a Tall Pile of Bricks is an all-time classic regardless of...platform. Haha

bought one and sent it back a few days later... i couldn't get past the fact that i could always see the side of the lenses whatever i was doing; it totally stopped the immersion for me...but maybe i have a weird shaped head that emphasised that? also the power/quality just didnt feel like it was there yet for me to put down £350 on it right now.amazon refunded within 2 days so no big issue. if it turns out that the catalogue becomes fantastic and ps 4 pro / ps5 really ups the quality, then maybe i'll jump back on in a year or two when it'll be cheaper
