I was hoping to love it and only liked it; the "happy" ending (queasy or not) felt forced and the "real" love interest should not have been there. Also, Patton Oswalt is wasted. Still, I admire Hill's chutzpah.

Both psyched and bummed that the trailer uses Patto - The Man, because it's a favorite of mine but also sort of a pet "deep cut" I like to play for people, put on mixes to surprise friends, etc.

I loved the Ronnie character. don't really see him as this Bickle-esque tortured monster. he was not unsympathetic at all!

absolutely loved the soundtrack, but there was definitely an over-reliance on hpstr iPod action going on. one song isn't even over and homie is cutting right to the next.

as for the movie, I definitely didn't hate it, but there parts that were surprisingly draggy for a film so gonzo in so many respects. I thought Rogen did an admirable job, even if I thought some of Ronnie's more unsavory characteristics were a bit of a hard sell for him. the careening tone (e.g. the "real" love interest, redemption, etc.) bothered my girlfriend a lot more than me. umm lol bipolar??

some stuff just really fell flat, like anything involving his mother.

+ there are some non-narrative movies i like just fine, eg anchorman, but this film was meant to have an arc one way or another, so having it so thrown-together didn't work.

perhaps it fell between two stools: either do a 'redemption arc' thing or just have loads of random shit like his buddy getting into heroin.

or even do the anti-redemption arc. felt bit cheated when the guy at the end didn't die because him getting shot was him getting shot was loooooool.

weird, weird movie but i liked it.

this was great. a few too many musical montages but otherwise, wow what a weird movie, great that Rogen put his fleeting fame behind getting something this odd made.

This movie was like Taxi Driver written and directed by a semi-literate Everybody Loves Raymond fan or something. Honestly I have no idea what to make of it. Just a weird and fairly pointless film.

I just saw this and didn't care for it at all. I wanted to laugh harder at the parts that actually were funny, but even the best scenes had annoying elements (usually music-related... god damn was it overbearing) that kind of made my laughter stick in my throat.

It felt to me like Hill couldn't decide if he wanted to make a comedy or a pointless Taxi Driver knock-off. It came out like Punch Drunk Love 2. After this movie, I think I have decided that Hill is a juvenile hack who is really lucky to be surrounded by talented people.

the word "juvenile" came to mind strictly because of how he writes female characters. they are either helpless and innocent with hearts of gold, shallow sluts, or shrews. none of them ever have big parts - they are just there as an end-zone mechanism for the fat anti-hero.

i wouldn't let my girl watch pretty woman because everyone in that movie was either helpless and innocent with hearts of gold, shallow sluts, or shrews

I wouldn't let me girl watch pretty woman because I wouldn't want her to get the impression that horse-faced whores make lots of money

I wouldn't subject my wife to "Pretty Woman" because she'd make me watch it with her and srsly fuck that.

guys, i wasn't saying i kept her from Hill's stuff - just didn't recommend it.

Buck Utah (rockapads), Thursday, 19 November 2009 21:46 (fourteen years ago) link

do you judge all movies you subject her to on the strength of the female roles?

da croupier, Thursday, 19 November 2009 22:12 (fourteen years ago) link

cuz you never know, she might think anna faris plays a pretty funny shallow slut in this

da croupier, Thursday, 19 November 2009 22:15 (fourteen years ago) link

That's doubtful.

We call them "meat hemorrhoids" (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 November 2009 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link

well, i wouldn't recommend this particular movie to anyone... but in general i doubt there would be much for her to enjoy in any of Hill's stuff. possibly Eastbound & Down if she could stick it through to the last few episodes. we have watched and enjoyed some manchild-with-crush-on-one-dimensional-female comedies together in the past, but Hill's stuff is mean enough in other aspects that i doubt she would enjoy.

i chose the word "subject", because she wasn't interested in the first place, so i would have had to talk her into it.

this movie was pretty mediocre to bad. had no consistent tone and didn't know what it wanted to be, was like a three-headed Cerberos film that didn't stick to anything long enough.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 31 July 2011 14:30 (twelve years ago) link

two years pass...

after seeing all of Eastbound and Down, it feels like this part must have been written for Danny McBride, right...? Feel like it would have been an immensely better film with him in the lead.

six years pass...

I think about this movie at least a couple times a year, it's due a proper re-evaluation (even if the infamous sex scene is awful + not funny and it would have been better with McBride in the lead)
