To answer the original question, the Arkham Knight season pass has some fun fan service stuff in there but there's already tons to do in the core game, so I'd probably avoid paying full price for it, it's due to start going on sale pretty soon anyway I expect (new content stopped being added to it in December I think?).

yep... i think general opinion of the Arkham DLC was one of disappointment. on another note, hubba hubba for this Uncharted trailer graphics

looks so cool! just finished the the first three that came bundled with my ps4

arkham knight was such a bitter disappointment - those interminable fucking batmobile sequences killed it for me

if you like the arkham games and you wanna be batman, i would strongly recommend you just get Metal Gear Solid V.

super-otm

PS4 arrives tomorrow. Goodbye, weekend.

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 25 February 2016 14:58 (eight years ago) link

you probably need a second controller. the battery life on these is terrible and the sad answer there is that you want to have one charging while you play so you can swap out when your gamepad dies.

ulysses, Thursday, 25 February 2016 14:58 (eight years ago) link

I know it's not very well-received, but the deal I got includes the Star Wars shooty game. Does anyone here play that?

do people really do this? when mine gets low on battery i just plug it in to a standard USB charger and keep playing while it's connected

couch is too far away from the machine in my house but god bless if it works for you!

ulysses, Thursday, 25 February 2016 15:26 (eight years ago) link

battlefront is sort of fun for a little while, some of the modes are cool, but hopefully it's a box copy bc you might wanna trade it in (...he said, not having traded in a game for years)

Worth Taking from Little Kid (Will M.), Thursday, 25 February 2016 15:28 (eight years ago) link

hah, no, I think it's a bundled download code

I am getting that phone-controlled BB-8 droid, though. If the PS4 is a great disappointment, I'll always have that.

you don't need to plug your controller into the ps4 to charge it! all you need is any usb charger (from your kindle/iphone/android/novelty mug warmer/whatever) and somewhere to plug it in

Butt here is always time for the John Mayer Trio or Sting. (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 25 February 2016 15:47 (eight years ago) link

yeah, i just ain't big on having strings on it really.

ulysses, Thursday, 25 February 2016 15:47 (eight years ago) link

I have a couple usb battery pack things and have used those for random charging devices. Should work for the PS4 controller if it'll charge an iPad, I'd think.

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 25 February 2016 15:47 (eight years ago) link

obvious solution is to wear a utility belt 90s comic style with a half dozen usb charger packs

like batman

the bat is short for battery

should I play Ground Zeroes before The Phantom Pain y/n

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 25 February 2016 19:48 (eight years ago) link

ground zeroes is great and will prep you for phantom pain (exact same controls) PLUS you can completely skip the cinemas! So i say yes.

ulysses, Thursday, 25 February 2016 19:50 (eight years ago) link

if you do play GZ first then TPP report back bc i am jealous that you get to play GZ then you don't need ot WAIT IN AGONY for TPP to finally come out like i did

Worth Taking from Little Kid (Will M.), Thursday, 25 February 2016 20:04 (eight years ago) link

looks like ground zeroes has no online sale, i'll either scramble to find it locally or wait if deciding to do them in order

playstation network has phantom pain for $30 heck yeah

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 25 February 2016 20:07 (eight years ago) link

ground zeroes was free with ps+ (which you should get immediately) otherwise, i would recommend just getting phantom pain straight up.
again: until you are riding a horse in the desert, you are in the tutorial which is dopey. Wait until after you've finished your first mission to levy judgment.

The same is true for real life

Karl Malone, Thursday, 25 February 2016 20:43 (eight years ago) link

I have PS+! It's $20 now.

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 25 February 2016 20:55 (eight years ago) link

wellllll the thing with ps+ is that you have access to anything you've "bought" from the moment you've subscribed and not the stuff that WAS free. so i think you missed that one.

ulysses, Thursday, 25 February 2016 21:19 (eight years ago) link

yeah, I am a subscriber, but I didn't pay attention and "buy" everything for all platforms during that time, woe is me

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 25 February 2016 21:38 (eight years ago) link

i thought the intro was amazing personally and also totally in the spirit of the craziness of the older Metal Gear Solid games. MGSV is the perfect open world game and this is the perfect tutorial. the player is learning how to walk, crawl, sneak, etc. alongside the character. one of MGSV's main themes is the merging of player and character experience and the tutorial is both a way to introduce the new gameplay mechanics and let Kojima go hog-wild with this Del Toro-and-horror-films-(and anime of course) inspired intro. i love the direction and the dark humor.

to those that don't like the intro, what was it about it that you didn't like? all modern open world games have to have a linear/intro/tutorial mission, Kojima is doing so in his cinematic style. i thought the scene where you learn you have lost your arm was very moving. the scene with the doctor putting up x-rays and explaining that you have 108 pieces of bone and metal embedded in you was also amazing. perhaps this has to do with my own medical history, i have had many operations, and i think i can relate to the idea of a phantom pain. this game definitely captures that.

Ground Zeroes was incredible, and still is the height of Metal Gear Solid imo. it is the most polished, at least, being a smaller area, with some better animations, more compact level design, and a higher guard count. TPP is such a huge area(s) and Konami cut off the budget before they could really polish it to that level. just the introduction to GZ, the seamless single-camera continuous shot, the staging of all the guards and choreography of vehicles, the lighting is so much more impressive than most of TPP. i say play both, and if you start with TPP then you will have a very cool and meaningful experience playing GZ after you finish the game. let's just say plotwise and thematically the two really are parts one and two of the 5th Metal Gear Solid. i played GZ when it came out and beat TPP twice before going back to try GZ and it was still very surprising how i felt after being in TPP's world for so long.

spoilers!!

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 26 February 2016 14:35 (eight years ago) link

the intro/tutorial was great, really intense. also i replayed gz and noticed the a.i. isn't nearly as good as tpp. like in gz i slowly crawled away from a guard like 10 ft in front of him while he scratched his head trying and said "huh?" and then lost his interest minutes later

am0n, Friday, 26 February 2016 17:36 (eight years ago) link

tbf that's me as a guard. there's gotta be a few terrible guards in there

I guess we can use this as the default thread for Sony gaming media, yeah? Since everything that isn't the PS4 is slowly dying?

Speaking of, Sony just announced that they've officially stopped producing the Playstation TV. Anyone have one of these? What do you think? Should I get one while the gettin's good? I think I like the idea of playing my Vita games on the TV. But I don't know if it would be more than just a novelty, particularly since not all games are even compatible with it.

Between this and the announcement that they're shutting down PSP access to the PlayStation Store, I'm feeling more and more like I need to figure out the intricacies of getting survivalist with my last gen media so that I'm not caught unawares when Sony disavows the existence of anything pre-PS4.

the pstv always seemed like a baffling idea to me right from the off - i still can't quite believe it made it to market in the first place

i have a vita but i never felt like i was missing out not being able to play those games on my tv, either because the games i enjoyed most were a) cross-play with ps3 and ps4 so i could already play them on my tv using those machines instead or b) not compatible with the pstv because they needed the vita's backend touchscreen. also i'm pretty sure a lot of vita games which look great on the vita's little screen would look like total butt on my 40-inch tv.

it's kinda weird too that sony thought consumers might need not just one but two additional devices capable of streaming gameplay from their ps4, right?

BEEFSQUEAK (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 15:17 (eight years ago) link

with the new beta update you can stream to PC/mac

BEEFSQUEAK (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 15:27 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I mean, like many of Sony's gaming ideas, it has potential but its actual implementation seems utimately half-assed.

Don't Forget To Reince Your Priebus (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 15:50 (eight years ago) link

was surprised to hear about the streaming to PC/Mac, even more surprised to find that they were just playing catchup with the XBone/Windows 10 functionality appparently

Nhex, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 16:04 (eight years ago) link

yesterday my kids discovered a trove of ancient games, all still perfectly playable on my PS3:

- vib ribbon
- parappa the rapper
- tomb raider

i really like that i can still play them

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 March 2016 16:48 (eight years ago) link

i haven't played in a long time but i'd be up for it! i pretty much play Assault mode exclusively

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 9 March 2016 16:53 (eight years ago) link

I've played that one a bit, but have mostly been playing the capture the flag / capture the escape pod variants. I'm reeeeeally bad at shooters on consoles so far, but I think I'm getting incrementally better

xp parappa the rapper for ps3? It was a port or something?

kick, punch, it's all in the mind

antexit, Thursday, 10 March 2016 20:54 (eight years ago) link

I'm guessing he meant physical copies of PS1 games. Parappa is only available digitally for PSP/Vita afaik. But Parappa 2 is available for the PS4 in the PS store now, you lucky sumbitches.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 10 March 2016 23:10 (eight years ago) link

No, apparently Parappa 2 is an actual PS2 game I didn't even know existed. Um Jammer Lammy is fantastic, though. So nice I've bought it thrice.

never played Parappa 2 but most reactions I heard were negative

as the resident in-house dumbass who buys all the stupid things (you may remember me from such films as "trying to convince myself to buy a 3DS Happy Home Designer bundle to get the smaller New 3DS with the colored buttons"), the Playstation TV feels like a safe one to skip. if I'm going to be playing a video game on my TV it should be something designed to look & feel good on a screen of that size. some of those experiences (hello Spelunky) are exportable to the Vita platform because the Vita is actually a wonderfully powerful piece of hardware which can handle a considerable amount of video game, but most aren't so 9 times out of 10 the Playstation TV brings nothing to the table. I seriously doubt P4 is going to be any more fun played with a DS4 gazing across my living room at a TV than it was on my Vita over the course of a couple dozen airports.
