i always understand 'mega therion' to be a theme park

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:14 (eight years ago) link

hoped that might beat out metallica and slayer to #1

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link

I remember reading about Bergtatt first in a review that completely panned it as a boring Burzum-ripoff, all recycled riffs, a sure sign that the Norwegian scene had totally lost it if bands like this were coming up, etc.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link

"and not so much an extreme metal classic."

i agree but i'll take what i can get in the land of liturgy and deafheaven. still one of my favorite albums.

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:16 (eight years ago) link

there's still room for surprises... any thoughts on unexpected albums popping up?

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:17 (eight years ago) link

Babymetal?

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:17 (eight years ago) link

Bergtatt was the surprise, surely!

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:18 (eight years ago) link

I always liked that the To Mega Therion cover implies some improbable upper body strength from our saviour and redeemer.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:19 (eight years ago) link

lol

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:21 (eight years ago) link

pantera?

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:22 (eight years ago) link

no metallica at all?

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:22 (eight years ago) link

or sunn0))))

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:22 (eight years ago) link

one or the other

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:23 (eight years ago) link

3 metallica, 1 slayer, 1 burzum, 1 darkthrone, 1 mayhem and 1 atheist don't go into 6, although maybe ilx has renounced the more racist albums. or metallica

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:23 (eight years ago) link

-atheist I'd say

Dominique, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:24 (eight years ago) link

you need to -2

i'm on the dodgems at mega therion. it's kinda cool. there's a mean kid bumping everyone too hard

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:27 (eight years ago) link

there are three 8 minute songs on master of puppets. it was remarkable at the time.

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:32 (eight years ago) link

3 metallica, 1 slayer, 1 burzum, 1 darkthrone, 1 mayhem and 1 atheist don't go into 6, although maybe ilx has renounced the more racist albums. or metallica

Obviously ILM is all about embracing their inner racist, with James Hetfields redneck antics, Jeff Hannemans fascination for Nazi doctors, Vargs silly RPG, Darkthrones "obvious Jewish behaviour" and Mayhems "black metal is for white people", etc.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:32 (eight years ago) link

XP one could say that such lengths, at the time, were EXTREME!

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:33 (eight years ago) link

xp

but they draw the line at anselmo? weird

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link

hey, like I said, 'sanatarium' is awesome until the actual thrash begins, it's like an american take on goth-rock

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link

xps don't forget Dave Mustaine's dodgy anti-government conspiracy rants...

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link

I think we draw the line at Anselmo simply because ILM doesn't much care for Pantera.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:35 (eight years ago) link

The inevitable number 1:

damnit you stole my joke that had already been made 3 times!!

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:38 (eight years ago) link

now I don't have a joke #1 lined up. :(

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:38 (eight years ago) link

but anyway, speaking about good music made by bad people...

i think this record is pretty overrated but when i'm in the mood i enjoy it a lot

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:41 (eight years ago) link

tt and I were discussing how Extreme would make a great joke winner haha

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:41 (eight years ago) link

agree w BradNelson (I voted for a different Mayhem), and am happy to see this (presumably) not take the black metal prize

Dominique, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:42 (eight years ago) link

after hearing ppl scream their name for 30 years im resigned to who which thrash act will beat out the death and black metal

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:45 (eight years ago) link

In theory De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is overrated but its influence has been so huge - I mean hundreds of bands must've walked into the studio with this record in hand: "like this, please".

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:47 (eight years ago) link

I prefer Deathcrush, but De Mysteriis is definitely a huge influence on basically all Black Metal after it.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:50 (eight years ago) link

My thing w that record is that it doesn't sound very much like the stuff that Mayhem had put out up to then (including boots, live and rehearsals that I liked). It was almost like they had to play catch-up with that record, even tho they were actually the first band of the 2nd wave to do anything, and the whole scene seemed to revolve around them

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:57 (eight years ago) link

but looks like it killed the thread...

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:58 (eight years ago) link

imago must be cooking dinner as we know how much he loves slayer and metallica

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:01 (eight years ago) link

languishing in bed, wishing everything was bergtatt

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:01 (eight years ago) link

to mega therion was quite good i guess

Well in a sense they did, with the Dead situation the band was thrown back while Burzum, Immortal and Darkthrone all went ahead and recorded their debuts - and if I recall, most of De Mysteriis was already recorded in 1992 until they got Attila over there. But half of DMDS was already on Live In Leipzig, no? Not that big of a surprise, other than the surprisingly excellent sound Pytten got out of them.
