what Metallica album do you all think will place the highest, and at what number?
― Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:51 (eight years ago) link
south of heaven kinda my platonic satanic ideal. probably the metal album i've played the most since it came out? has to be.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:51 (eight years ago) link
imago wouldnt that be ...and justice for all by metallica?
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:52 (eight years ago) link
any of the first three metallica is a good vote. obvious or whatever but what are ya gonna do? they helped write the book. till the cool guy died anyway.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:52 (eight years ago) link
...and bass for none
― Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:53 (eight years ago) link
scott you dont like and justice for all?
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:55 (eight years ago) link
damn the slayer img link is broken already?this is why I was uploading them to an img server... I get lazy for a couple of posts and look what happens.
― Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:56 (eight years ago) link
i never listen to and justice for all. some good stuff on it but the beginning of the end...(much prefer garage days EP)
― scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:57 (eight years ago) link
(soundwise, i definitely prefer the garage days EP. wish all their albums sounded like that.)
― scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:58 (eight years ago) link
for posterity, the South of Heaven cover (again):

i was VERY excited when and justice came out and i did play it a lot after i bought it but it didn't live forever with me. i could listen to master of puppets any old day of the week.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:01 (eight years ago) link
south of heaven and streetcleaner, what more do you need out of life?
Too loooooow
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:01 (eight years ago) link
like raaaaaaats
― odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:02 (eight years ago) link
It's definitely enjoyable but I personally wouldn't put Streetcleaner anywhere near the top - dystopian and sludgy, very repetitive, but I kinda see it as an extension to Swans and Killing Joke, and not so much an extreme metal classic.

i always understand 'mega therion' to be a theme park
― odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:14 (eight years ago) link
hoped that might beat out metallica and slayer to #1
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link
I remember reading about Bergtatt first in a review that completely panned it as a boring Burzum-ripoff, all recycled riffs, a sure sign that the Norwegian scene had totally lost it if bands like this were coming up, etc.
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link
"and not so much an extreme metal classic."
i agree but i'll take what i can get in the land of liturgy and deafheaven. still one of my favorite albums.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:16 (eight years ago) link
there's still room for surprises... any thoughts on unexpected albums popping up?
― Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:17 (eight years ago) link
Babymetal?
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:17 (eight years ago) link
Bergtatt was the surprise, surely!
― odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:18 (eight years ago) link
I always liked that the To Mega Therion cover implies some improbable upper body strength from our saviour and redeemer.

3 metallica, 1 slayer, 1 burzum, 1 darkthrone, 1 mayhem and 1 atheist don't go into 6, although maybe ilx has renounced the more racist albums. or metallica
― odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:23 (eight years ago) link
-atheist I'd say
― Dominique, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:24 (eight years ago) link

i'm on the dodgems at mega therion. it's kinda cool. there's a mean kid bumping everyone too hard
― odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:27 (eight years ago) link
there are three 8 minute songs on master of puppets. it was remarkable at the time.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:32 (eight years ago) link
Obviously ILM is all about embracing their inner racist, with James Hetfields redneck antics, Jeff Hannemans fascination for Nazi doctors, Vargs silly RPG, Darkthrones "obvious Jewish behaviour" and Mayhems "black metal is for white people", etc.
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:32 (eight years ago) link
XP one could say that such lengths, at the time, were EXTREME!
― Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:33 (eight years ago) link
xp
but they draw the line at anselmo? weird
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link
hey, like I said, 'sanatarium' is awesome until the actual thrash begins, it's like an american take on goth-rock
― odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link
xps don't forget Dave Mustaine's dodgy anti-government conspiracy rants...
― Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link
I think we draw the line at Anselmo simply because ILM doesn't much care for Pantera.
― Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:35 (eight years ago) link
