A way you don't want to sign off in your letter to the Editor after your manuscript has gotten negative reviews:

"Sincelery"

If my company doesn't match 401k contributions, would I be better off investing for retirement some other way?

This is a good question, since mine doesn't, apparently.

jaymc, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 21:57 (sixteen years ago) link

i've been rather AWOL but this article will make a lot of you want to come & visit.

sweet tater, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Hmm... Based on this bl00mberg.com calculator, it would be really nice to have a matching contribution.

KitCat, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Anything cool going on the 14th-16th? I'll be there for sure this time. (I'm speaking at this conference.) I'll have some time to check out the city during the day on the 16th for sure. Am looking forward.

Sundar, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:05 (sixteen years ago) link

sincelery = food porn?

i just walked to walgreens to get claritin (why i didn't go to the much closer cvs is beyond me, other than i keep forgetting it's there) and i can confirm that it is indeed snowing in the ukrainian village. enough to dust the ice on the side of the road.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Kevin you missed it: we just had a wine and cheese soiree for the new hosting platform launch. There was easily 40lbs of cheese (hard, soft, stinky, gooey, all varieties) up there, plus pate, salami, fruit, and of course WINE. I want to go home now, and I think I will shortly.

dan m, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Hi Sundar, the only thing I know for sure that's happening is that my band is playing a show on the 14th. But you'll probably be at the AACM thing that night. Come back next week, and I bet we'll have a better idea of things to do.

jaymc, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:25 (sixteen years ago) link

im sick, i get off work at 10pm and have an hour+ public transportation commute home :-((((((((

deej, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:25 (sixteen years ago) link

then have to leave for work @ 11am tomorrow

deej, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:26 (sixteen years ago) link

deej and jvc should get together and have a complain-off about work

La Lechera, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:29 (sixteen years ago) link

damn, picked the right time to get sick.

also, it appears my apartment is unheated during the day. but it was starting to come on when i got back from the drug store. i've spent my day on my couch under my duvet trying (unsuccessfully) to sleep sitting up. if i lay down the sinus pressure is too much and i start coughing.

but i did make a big cheesy baked potato so it wasn't all bad.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 22:39 (sixteen years ago) link

i think we're going to see shellac that weekend. and isn't there some thrill jockey anniversary party all that weekend as well?

colette, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 00:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Rave for August: Osage County

If you are ever in San Francisco and are in a band (Nick, Sarah, John), you should play at The Make-Out Room, and I would highly recommend dinner with the predictibly debonair M. White.

Eazy, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 06:15 (sixteen years ago) link

that's right around the corner from my friend dan's place. should have told him you were playing....

if you were going to curate a summer film series to a general audience, using "los angeles" as your theme, what might you pick (pick 4, plus 2 backups). i was thinking:
LA Confidential
Heat
Chinatown
Boyz in d Hood
Shortcuts?
Killer of Sheep?
Collateral?

Obviously the choices here are infinitely, but what is appropriately middlebrow that it will still bring in a crowd?

robotsinlove, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 10:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd pick Collateral over Heat, just because of the shorter length. If the audience doesn't need to know the movies already, Echo Park and Miracle Mile are both middlebrow movies themselves, just not well known.

Oh! Laurel Canyon -- that would be a good one.

I didn't play the Makeout Room but saw the Sc0tland Yard Gosp Ch0ir there last weekend, surprised them by showing up. Afterwards, a block away, at almost midnight on Sunday night, I came across this thing called Classical Revolution at a coffeehouse/bar called Revolution. Absolutely packed little room -- four musicians (strings and piano) playing Mozart, but in this live, boisterous coffeehouse way. The room was mostly lit by music-stand lights.

Eazy, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 13:15 (sixteen years ago) link

that sounds like a very eazy moment.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 13:22 (sixteen years ago) link

How did I miss the news that Kevin DuBrow died? Such a bummer you guys.

Jenny, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 14:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, I was going to mention Big Trouble in Little China, but Wikipedia said it's set in San Francisco. I've never seen it. IMDB says L.A., though.

i just ran into jesse at the argyle station! i think i scared him.

Ha, I ran into Jesse and Katie last night at the gay bar around the corner from my house.

jaymc, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 14:51 (sixteen years ago) link

so i was in the kitchen and i noticed that one of the metal things that sits above the burner on the stovetop wasn't locked in place, so i went to shift it back into place, but i forgot i had JUST been using that burner to boil water and it was incredibly hot and i burned the dickens out of my thumb and index finger. this was like 3 hours ago and it still really hurts even though i've been icing my fingers all morning

n/a, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

not the good kind of icing either

KitCat, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:52 (sixteen years ago) link

That second one is totally stuffed. Ick.

What I've had to eat today, by me:
* 2 pieces of cinnamon toast
* coffee
* a bagel with cream cheese (it was free at work!)
* a piece of chocolate (free treats at work!)
* hot chocolate

KitCat, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

There are free treats at work from Thanksgiving to New Years. I am going to get so far on cookies and banana bread and coffee cake.

My power flickered 15 min before my alarm was supposed to go off, so I got a bonus 45 minutes of sleep :) :/. I've had some vanilla yogurt and coffee.

Jesse, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link

do you play guitar with that hand, nick?

Jordan, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:21 (sixteen years ago) link

i play guitar with both hands

n/a, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:23 (sixteen years ago) link

ha ha, but the burns were on my fretting hand, which sucks, but fortunately the worse burn is on my thumb, which doesn't really do much for fretting. my index finger is also burnt but not as bad and not on the tip, which is the important part. actually, guitar-playing callus may have protected the index tip a little.

n/a, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link

though i tried to play just now and barre chords kind of suck, since i use my index finger as the barre for those. it hurt. might have to reconfigure my playing a little, at least for practice tonight

n/a, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Would it hurt as much if you wore your fingerless mittens?
