I don't know who that is, but he looks more like a rocker than an electronic artist.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

(It's Masami Akita aka Merzbow)

Noodle Vague, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:27 (sixteen years ago) link

That makes sense, noise is basically electronic music for metalheads, right?

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:28 (sixteen years ago) link

You have much to learn, young grasshopper.

(The bald dude is M. Mayer, Tuomas, before you ask.)

Noodle Vague, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, I've never met anyone who'd come to electronic music via the dance side of it, who'd be interested in noise. All noise fans I know are rockers and (ex-)metalheads.

Tuomas do you know who El Tomboto is

El Tomboto, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Is that the long-haired guy in the pic above?

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Well to be fair Stockhausen did put out some blinding Rockabilly 45s before he wrote Kontakte.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link

btw dudes in the cave are not electronic dudes but noise dudes with pedals in a cave.

Is dude in jacket Trent Reznor's under achieving little brother.

Display Name, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Stockhausen was a noise artist? I guess John Cage was a turntablist then.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link

How old is that Jarre pic? He looks so young in it.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Steve Reich was the first hip-hop megastar

Just got offed, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Christ, according to the address the pic is from this year?! Isn't Jarre like 60 now?

Jean Michel Jarre, yesterday.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Whoa, it seems Jarre's put out a new single this year. Both the tune and the video feel like pretty attempts to stay hip with the kids:

At least Kraftwerk retain some dignity as they practice the bobsleigh for the next winter olympics

Ha I'm amazed I recognized Pole instantly from those photos which is strange, because I've seen what he looks like, once maybe. Yeah, they do like like promo shots for some one releasing a new-age album or something.

I also guessed right off the bat that that picture of Murcof (it's him cause I checked) was Fax, because he looks mexican. Pretty damn good for such poor criteria!

Either way, everyone here is how I expected them to look except old man mixmaster morris of course. Stockhausen looks like Ian Curtis no? Ha, I'm sure he'll be getting a biopic now.
Seriously though, Edgard Varese is actually rather impressive in his appearance, combines the mad-scientist in his/her lab with the eccentric professor look and comes out like a true any Musique Concrete artist should (whatever that implies)

... don't really know what's going on in that photo... esp. the 'tache

Playing some sort of Theremin-esque thing I guess.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:04 (sixteen years ago) link

lol Schaeffer's 1-octave keyboard.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I think that Pierre Schaeffer pic is fantastic

Tom D., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I semi-joke about the staring into the future pose but quite a few of these pics have a wonderful dreamy-but-focussed/intent look about them. A combination of the mad scientist thing noted above with sharply Mod dress sense, some feeling of "I am making Magick happen here". The flash reflection (I assume) in the Schaeffer photo composes the whole thing really well.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:09 (sixteen years ago) link

k I'm stupid, dreamy/intent = listening, doesn't it?

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:12 (sixteen years ago) link

50s electronic musicians look like film stars!
