I really like the movie (road trip spy zaniness + cartoons, how could I not?) and I really like Steve Martin when he's great (The Jerk, L.A. Story), but yow, yes, it was painful.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:12 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, steve martin at the top of his game is awesome, but he's become pretty tiresome lately (especially those shitty "literary" humour pieces he does for the new yorker)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago) link

Best movie ever.

Leee O'Gaddi (Leee), Sunday, 4 April 2004 00:13 (twenty years ago) link

Agent Clay's plugs? Scared the hell out of me!

Leee O'Gaddi (Leee), Sunday, 4 April 2004 00:13 (twenty years ago) link

Loved it.
Certainly not without its shortcomings, but a great adventure movie. I loved the way Hellboy kept getting beat up inthe first half of the movie, just like Indiana Jones in Raiders.
I kinda felt like they tried to tell too big of a story in too small of a movie though. But I've been wearing my big, stupid fanboy grin for the last 14 hours. I even had a dream about the sequel last night.

Huck, Sunday, 4 April 2004 18:32 (twenty years ago) link

Just came back from it, it was great. The ending let me down a little. Not that it's crappy, or stupid, or involves some last-minute thing from out of left field, it just wasn't as good as the rest. Ron Perlman is great, though! And the lack of $20 million salaries in the cast ought to make a sequel perfectly feasible.

(The other similarity to Indiana Jones: it would be really easy to do a sequel to this movie without it feeling the least bit forced or tacked on.)

Through the whole movie, I thought Abe was voiced by David Hyde Pierce. And when John Hurt's name rolled in the credits, I couldn't figure out who he'd played. I'm usually better at recognizing people.

(No Scooby or Starsky double feature today, I got plenty done yesterday but the girlfriend didn't.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:58 (twenty years ago) link

Hurt was Broome, and yeah, DHP, otm.
My dream about the sequel was actually a prequelly kinda thing called Hellboy:The Lost Years.
What I don't like about movies based on comics is that everything has to have weight and impact. Whereas in the comics, since there are like 12 sotires a year, writers can afford some just plain casual adventuring, which is honestly my favourite kind. I mean, I'm not against saving the world, that's a good thing to do, but I also like to see heroes come up against less cataclysmic stuff. Cuz anyone can prevent the end of the world and walk away a hero, but what about more normal stuff, like, uh, going to the dentist.
I guess that's why I liked the live-action Tick series so much.

Huck, Sunday, 4 April 2004 20:04 (twenty years ago) link

Really nicely done (definitely better than any recent comic adaptation. . . pretty clever, some great FX, good one-liners, decent acting all around, but really good performance from Perlman.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 4 April 2004 20:10 (twenty years ago) link

Through the whole movie, I thought Abe was voiced by David Hyde Pierce.

But he is, isn't he?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:54 (twenty years ago) link

Someone just told me he was; around the times the credits rolled is when my migraine set in, so all I saw was "Abe ... so-and-so," which I guess is the body actor. I didn't see DHP in the credits, but apparently, yep, he was the voice. (DHP didn't want to be in a fishman suit?)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:57 (twenty years ago) link

I am very excited to see this.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, are the Blade movies any good? I've always been curious about them...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago) link

I am in a big comic book movie mood right now.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:00 (twenty years ago) link

the first one is SO!!! AWESOME!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:00 (twenty years ago) link

the second one stinks.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:00 (twenty years ago) link

I think they're both pretty good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago) link

I think adam might appreciate Ron Perlman's blatant theft of the second movie. Which can't be more than 1/10 below the first.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:03 (twenty years ago) link

The first Blade is very good; I've never seen the entirety of the second, for some reason (I've never rented it, just caught it on cable, and either it doesn't grab me or it just shows up when I'm easily distracted/doing other things -- I don't know which). But if you're excited to see Hellboy, you'd probably love Blade.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:05 (twenty years ago) link

What else????

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:09 (twenty years ago) link

superman 1!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:11 (twenty years ago) link

especially the dvd with all the trippy extra footage!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:12 (twenty years ago) link

Some of Superman really falls apart for me, but the DVD is very nice. Superman 2 makes up for the first one's failings even though it has its own. (This is true of Batman and Batman Returns, too; the second one has the interesting love interest the first one glaringly lacks, but is also a huge sloppy chin-dribbling mess of a thing.)

Ghostbusters isn't a comic book movie, but I think the "we're just regular guys going to work, except work involves killing monsters" angle qualifies it as a Hellboy uncle.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:14 (twenty years ago) link

for sure! but i must say i looooove superman 1.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:14 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, remember the original Darkman movie? I loved that at the time...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:15 (twenty years ago) link

with la law dude!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago) link

benny!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago) link

It's still GREAT!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago) link

but i must say i looooove superman 1.

Consistently? I mean, the Margot Kidder "can you read my mind?" scene, and the Jor-El's Prime Directive scene towards the end?

Technically Men in Black is a comic book movie, but next to no one had read the comic when it came out. (Ditto Road to Perdition.)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago) link

The Rocketeer is pretty fun too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago) link

the margot kidder scene is something else. whew. i read an interview with richard donner where he basically said, "well, people have to get up and go to the bathroom when they're at the movies, so i suppose this is the scene where they oughta do that."

i love pretty much any and all of the brando stuff. especially when his face turns into a gigantic exploding psychedelic space crystal!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:56 (twenty years ago) link

this brings me back to one of my favourite "dream-casting" ideas ever: '70s-era marlon brando (ie apocalypse now/last tango brando) as the dark knight in the dark knight returns!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:57 (twenty years ago) link

oh man i really want to see this but i probably wont be able to

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 April 2004 01:58 (twenty years ago) link

i'm going crazy wanting to see this! and my dawn of the dead date fell through tonight! i gnash my teeth!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago) link

no one will go with me :-(

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 April 2004 02:02 (twenty years ago) link

maybe you should dress up as hellboy and go by yourself!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 02:03 (twenty years ago) link

this is what i get for ditching all my geek friends post-college

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 April 2004 02:05 (twenty years ago) link

Dude, seeing movies by yourself is classic, if the theater is good and non-sleazy.

I don't think the bladder defense is good enough re: Margot Kidder's music video.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 02:31 (twenty years ago) link

"can you read my MIND?!"

and yeah, i see movies by myself all the time! and i'm cool

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 April 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago) link

I thought hellboy was pretty great. Classic even! Can't wait to see if the Xmen series does the Phoenix saga.

hector (hector), Monday, 5 April 2004 04:16 (twenty years ago) link

It would be so, so good if they did.

re: Hellboy, I meant to mention the special effects for Selma Blair On Fire, too -- I now fully believe in the feasibility of a Fantastic Four movie that wouldn't suck. That was one of those nice touches, like when you know (obviously) that it's special effects, but you don't feel like they're trying to blow you away with "hey, look what we can do."

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:33 (twenty years ago) link

I loved the clockwork guy. (haven't read the comic, though I probably will now, even though all the asswipes at the comic store will accuse me of bandwagonning, even though I've been a fan of Mignola's since Gotham By Gaslight)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 April 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago) link

I'd never gotten around to the comic (hearing people talk about it, it always sounded like something that would have very involved continuity, hard to read casually; which it turns out is not at all the case) but picked up the first volume yesterday. It's very different from the movie: the Prof has a small enough role that he could be written out entirely (or could die of old age between flashback and current day) without affecting the story; Liz is ten years older with none of her insecurities; Torch of Liberty, a Captain America analogue, is part of the group at the beginning, so this is a more comic booky universe; other things like that.

The spirit is mostly the same, and I don't know how representative the first book is.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 13:52 (twenty years ago) link

Hellboy thread on I Love Comics.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 5 April 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago) link

The way X2 ended I have no doubt in my mind that, if there is an X3, it will be the Phoenix thang.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 5 April 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago) link

I'm all for another X-Men movie, and Dark Phoenix is cool and all, but Jean Grey is just so BORING.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 5 April 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago) link

(Speaking of comics, the second collection of The Maxx is either out or reprinted -- I hadn't seen it before, but I might well have missed it. It won't make too much sense if you haven't read the first volume and don't remember the cartoon, but damn is it good.)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 14:10 (twenty years ago) link

(Can someone please please please re-release The Maxx cartoons on DVD? Best cartoons ever)

First comic-book adaptation I've liked since Blade, but it dropped off in quality at the second subway adventure. Comments about it trying to fit too much into the movie OTM - but that's been the case with every comic book movie other than Blade, right? SpiderMan really suffered from the "here's the backstory, oh and a little action!"-syndrome

Baby Hellboy was awesome, the cat fetish was a nice touch.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 5 April 2004 22:39 (twenty years ago) link

I tried googling today to figure out why on earth the Maxx isn't on DVD -- the out-of-print videocassette sells for as much as $100, so you figure the demand must be there -- but found nothing. Sometimes there's a rights thing or whatever.

Baby Hellboy was really great, although the Baby Ruth thing had me thinking Goonies (this isn't necessarily bad, I guess).

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 5 April 2004 23:25 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, damn, $100? I bought the Maxx cartoons for $1 at Movie Trading Co. a couple of years ago and left it at someone's apartment.
