I really like the movie (road trip spy zaniness + cartoons, how could I not?) and I really like Steve Martin when he's great (The Jerk, L.A. Story), but yow, yes, it was painful.

yeah, steve martin at the top of his game is awesome, but he's become pretty tiresome lately (especially those shitty "literary" humour pieces he does for the new yorker)

Loved it.
Certainly not without its shortcomings, but a great adventure movie. I loved the way Hellboy kept getting beat up inthe first half of the movie, just like Indiana Jones in Raiders.
I kinda felt like they tried to tell too big of a story in too small of a movie though. But I've been wearing my big, stupid fanboy grin for the last 14 hours. I even had a dream about the sequel last night.

Just came back from it, it was great. The ending let me down a little. Not that it's crappy, or stupid, or involves some last-minute thing from out of left field, it just wasn't as good as the rest. Ron Perlman is great, though! And the lack of $20 million salaries in the cast ought to make a sequel perfectly feasible.

(The other similarity to Indiana Jones: it would be really easy to do a sequel to this movie without it feeling the least bit forced or tacked on.)

Through the whole movie, I thought Abe was voiced by David Hyde Pierce. And when John Hurt's name rolled in the credits, I couldn't figure out who he'd played. I'm usually better at recognizing people.

(No Scooby or Starsky double feature today, I got plenty done yesterday but the girlfriend didn't.)

Hurt was Broome, and yeah, DHP, otm.
My dream about the sequel was actually a prequelly kinda thing called Hellboy:The Lost Years.
What I don't like about movies based on comics is that everything has to have weight and impact. Whereas in the comics, since there are like 12 sotires a year, writers can afford some just plain casual adventuring, which is honestly my favourite kind. I mean, I'm not against saving the world, that's a good thing to do, but I also like to see heroes come up against less cataclysmic stuff. Cuz anyone can prevent the end of the world and walk away a hero, but what about more normal stuff, like, uh, going to the dentist.
I guess that's why I liked the live-action Tick series so much.

Really nicely done (definitely better than any recent comic adaptation. . . pretty clever, some great FX, good one-liners, decent acting all around, but really good performance from Perlman.)

Someone just told me he was; around the times the credits rolled is when my migraine set in, so all I saw was "Abe ... so-and-so," which I guess is the body actor. I didn't see DHP in the credits, but apparently, yep, he was the voice. (DHP didn't want to be in a fishman suit?)

The first Blade is very good; I've never seen the entirety of the second, for some reason (I've never rented it, just caught it on cable, and either it doesn't grab me or it just shows up when I'm easily distracted/doing other things -- I don't know which). But if you're excited to see Hellboy, you'd probably love Blade.

Some of Superman really falls apart for me, but the DVD is very nice. Superman 2 makes up for the first one's failings even though it has its own. (This is true of Batman and Batman Returns, too; the second one has the interesting love interest the first one glaringly lacks, but is also a huge sloppy chin-dribbling mess of a thing.)

Ghostbusters isn't a comic book movie, but I think the "we're just regular guys going to work, except work involves killing monsters" angle qualifies it as a Hellboy uncle.

Technically Men in Black is a comic book movie, but next to no one had read the comic when it came out. (Ditto Road to Perdition.)

the margot kidder scene is something else. whew. i read an interview with richard donner where he basically said, "well, people have to get up and go to the bathroom when they're at the movies, so i suppose this is the scene where they oughta do that."

i love pretty much any and all of the brando stuff. especially when his face turns into a gigantic exploding psychedelic space crystal!

re: Hellboy, I meant to mention the special effects for Selma Blair On Fire, too -- I now fully believe in the feasibility of a Fantastic Four movie that wouldn't suck. That was one of those nice touches, like when you know (obviously) that it's special effects, but you don't feel like they're trying to blow you away with "hey, look what we can do."

I'd never gotten around to the comic (hearing people talk about it, it always sounded like something that would have very involved continuity, hard to read casually; which it turns out is not at all the case) but picked up the first volume yesterday. It's very different from the movie: the Prof has a small enough role that he could be written out entirely (or could die of old age between flashback and current day) without affecting the story; Liz is ten years older with none of her insecurities; Torch of Liberty, a Captain America analogue, is part of the group at the beginning, so this is a more comic booky universe; other things like that.

The spirit is mostly the same, and I don't know how representative the first book is.

(Speaking of comics, the second collection of The Maxx is either out or reprinted -- I hadn't seen it before, but I might well have missed it. It won't make too much sense if you haven't read the first volume and don't remember the cartoon, but damn is it good.)

First comic-book adaptation I've liked since Blade, but it dropped off in quality at the second subway adventure. Comments about it trying to fit too much into the movie OTM - but that's been the case with every comic book movie other than Blade, right? SpiderMan really suffered from the "here's the backstory, oh and a little action!"-syndrome

Baby Hellboy was awesome, the cat fetish was a nice touch.

I tried googling today to figure out why on earth the Maxx isn't on DVD -- the out-of-print videocassette sells for as much as $100, so you figure the demand must be there -- but found nothing. Sometimes there's a rights thing or whatever.

Baby Hellboy was really great, although the Baby Ruth thing had me thinking Goonies (this isn't necessarily bad, I guess).
