she was also in 'failure to launch' which is not such a bad movie (well, better than i had any expectations of), though partly b/c she's in it

She's ok but she's no Maggie Gyllenhaal.

At least I don't post vile pictures of dead people and crack jokes abou it. Talk about inhumane.

Why not volunteer and go to Iraq so you can enjoy violating the dead firsthand?

I've met her, she's tiny and fine featured, but not perfectly pretty which is kind of hot. EXCELLENT singer, and quite friendly and seems smart.

I.M. From Hollywood (i_m_from_hollywood), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, she's pretty but not intimidatingly so. Actually yes, I would be intimidated, but y'know what I mean.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

If she's tiny, her mom must be an elf:

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:26 (seventeen years ago) link

That's because the Deschanel family was originally bred on shelves.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 23:14 (seventeen years ago) link

She's ok but she's no Maggie Gyllenhaal.

C'mon, Alfred...Maggie G may be an excellent actor but girl is purty homely. Nay - ugly. Zooey D is gorgeous.

Dare I say Fugly?

zooey is pretty in a spooky kinda way, maggie g is sorta cute and appealing but not pretty. jake always seems to be described as "dreamy" - that seems just about right.

timmy tannin (pompous), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 04:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Related thread: I want to be Maggie Gyllenhaal
(the Ethan/Jess IM convo above originally appeared there)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

If she's tiny, her mom must be an elf

Her mom was Eileen Hayward on Twin Peaks, the wheelchair-bound mother to Donna (Lara Flynn-Boyle).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

And her dad directed a couple of episodes, if I'm not mistaken.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Why would I have a Twin Peaks tab on my spreadsheet? SHASTA U SO CRAZY.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

o snap! hi donna's mom

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

one month passes...
So she's slated to play Janis Joplin in the new biopic,
"The Gospel According To Janis." I've never heard her
sing, but I'm hopeful that she has a killer voice.
After all, Pink was bypassed for the role and she's
an excellent Joplin interpreter.
Does anyone have a link to Deschanel's singing?

showed up in the last few episodes of the excellent season 2 of Weeds and will be a regular for at least the first few episodes when season 3 rolls around.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 18 November 2006 06:44 (seventeen years ago) link

That's weird about Janis. I really wish they wouldn't insist on picking an exceptionally pretty woman to play a plain, dare I say homely singer.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Saturday, 18 November 2006 06:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, no. You should dare.

I think that if she can channel the feeling that Janis showed during the Dick Cavett interview where she said "I'm going home" in a defiant yet still hurt way when talking about going to her high school reunion, she will have nailed it.

It will be interesting to see how they balance the life story and the music aspect of it. Unlike Ray and Walk the Line, I would argue that Janis' story would be more interesting WITHOUT the music playing a central part. Maybe some formative stuff, like when she learned to sing, but Janis was a soul singer...all emotion. Imitating her singing would accomplish little, I think.

B.L.A.M. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Saturday, 18 November 2006 06:53 (seventeen years ago) link

She was hilarious in Weeds.

SP is from BOISE, not bithville, hanging out at Terrapin Station and trying to bum weed from 22 year old girls who are disgusted by him. I imagine.

Zooey's clothes are still gross. I think Lily Tomlin should play Janis.

I don't really think that. Maybe William H. Macy would do well.

My friend and I just watched the last 4 eps of S2 of Weeds and I saw her name in the opening credits and was like "oh shit". Yeah, she ruled in it.

New album with M Ward actually quite good shockah. She sounds very sweet in front of the Ward wall-'o-Sound.

that too. And I really didn't want to post that, but I just get all crepey about Zooey Deschanel and can't help it.

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 20 March 2008 23:31 (sixteen years ago) link

bought the CD today, it's sort of shockingly good in a "tapestry", carol king kinda way.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:25 (sixteen years ago) link

"shockingly good" hits it about right on the head

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i mean the thought of a "hot" indie actress and a depresso b-list neil young clone indie folk dude doing a "kitchy" singer songwriter record makes me want to barffff in concept, but damn this is nice.

it's something when my least favorite 2 songs are "you really got a hold on me" and a beatles song.
