That set made me turn from a guy who liked Tom Petty to a man with a Petty problem.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 January 2016 17:55 (eight years ago) link

I dig the cover of that Siouxsie box, which is a rarity for those things.

well i never.
was about to mention the cover.
most of these cheap-n-cheerful boxes just have mini pics of the albums.
not often they have special artwork.

Thanks for the heads up on that Petty live set. That's a great price.

Recent Erato Dutilleux box is ~£15 at the moment. Annoyingly for me there is some overlap with the previous Erato box, but this includes stuff like the DG Hannigan/Salonen 'Correspondances'. Looks very similar to the DG box but that's about three times as expensive - not sure exactly how they compare.

Kind of surprised they didn't airbrush out the cigarette in his hand, but then again he lived to the age of 97 so

Bought this over the weekend:

It doesn't include the album Moon Germs, so I had to grab that separately. Still, wound up getting six albums for $35; that's not bad.

There's a new 'Five Classic Albums' bargain box for Scott Walker coming out on the 8th. (Scott 1 through 4 + Til The Band Comes In). What I would like to figure out is if it uses the remasterings from the box set of a couple years ago, which I don't like and don't want, or the individually released remasterings from around 2000 or so, which sound way better to me. I have Boy Child and Scotts 3 and 4 from that series but wouldn't mind sweeping the other ones up if those are the remasterings the new 5 Albums box uses. But I'm defaulting to the assumption it uses the most recent ones.

i have this. how can i tell which version it is.

it is Universal though. are they still using their audible watermarking? (oh apparently it doesn't affect cds)

cddb has just identified Scott 4 as "[RM 2000]" which i take to mean "Remastered 2000", but i'm not sure i trust cddb given that it didn't know Scott 3.

The recent remasters have a noticeably narrower soundstage than the prior remasters to my ears... I guess you would need to have both to compare in order to know which they used for the new set. There were no telltale bonus tracks to either edition.

Bought an 11CD box of Shostakovich symphonies this week for $45.

Got my eye on Fields Of Nephilim, Steve Hackett, Devin Townsend and Rick Wakeman boxes. There's some Hawnwind boxes but there's not much in them.

Interesting to see that that American troubadour Townes Van Zandt set is going through some sources fro about £12 again. I don't think it was last time I looked. Had half thought about it for my brother's girlfriend last Xmas.
Good set anyway.
& somebody's talking about it at the top of the thread.

Not sure if this is a temporary error but you can get the 33 disc DG Strauss complete operas for £11 atm.

That is quite a deal - it's $117 in the US. But I don't need any Strauss operas at the moment.

I find these days you need to buy deluxe reissue CDs really fast because they go out of print and all of a sudden go from being $8.99 from ZOverstocks to $59.99 from a third party. Like, that's going to happen with the recent batch of Saint Etienne deluxe reissue CDs, I can feel it.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 16 January 2018 19:14 (six years ago) link

Didn't it already? Those St. Etienne 2CDs were straight reissues of the 2CDs from a few years back, IIRC.

Sometimes it's the only way a label can afford to keep some albums on-catalogue

I'm a cheap CD fan, but somehow I can't bring my snobby self to buy one of those "album series" sets

I have, like, two dozen of them, and am at the point where I kinda resent artists who have enough albums on one label to qualify, but don't have cheapo catalog boxes. Like, fuck you, Prong, your albums are not worthy of individual purchase this far down the line, but I would buy a 5CD box of your old stuff in a heartbeat.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 21 March 2018 00:13 (six years ago) link

all my CDs go in big ol wallet / case things anyway (barring the ones that have exceptionally cool packaging) so the bargain sets are perfect for me

Simon H., Wednesday, 21 March 2018 00:55 (six years ago) link

I adore those box sets. I'm still listening to all the ones I bought 3-4 years ago. Just started my Delius box set too.

Agree with Unperson. Really hate it when they don't include bonus tracks, I held off from the King Diamond box set for that reason. So many great bands could have a great little box set.
