I've been researching some Japanese Footwork for a radio show, the stuff I really like drifts in to more abstract Hip Hop or other genres occasionally, but I love this from Orrorinz.

I've been toying with the idea of buying up a bunch of footwork (and related) vinyl online and teaching myself how to DJ properly... Is this a wise choice? All my mixes are kind of pre-prepared digital affairs rather than on the fly mixes. Footwork is still relatively niche where I live, but the appetite for booming bass has always been very high.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 15:02 (eight years ago) link

This is from a while ago. House of Black Lanterns don't strictly stick to footwork, but this is nice and forbidding.

It feels really awkward for me arguing this with a chicagoan, and my comment that dj nate invented bop was meant tongue in cheek, but the flexx washington mixtape came out in august, and ballin came out in september, no?

I'm sure most rap producers in Chicago have dabbled in footwork/juke, but out of the ones that really made their name on it, I can't think of any others (besides DJ Nate) who abandoned it?

some of them used to do it primarily but i'm sure veering to rap was specifically bc they hadn't made their names as dance producers

im not saying the culture is gone at all, i know ppl who still do it, just that the rap gold rush def shifted some of the zeitgeist away for awhile
