Browns finally hire a head coach who has some previous head coaching experience.

whats the over/under on people getting viciously attacked at LA coliseum games? +/- 5?

the seat rows there are comically huge.. too easy for drunk people bumping into each other to start beef imo

my dad saw some dude get thrown down a flight of stairs at a raiders game in the 80s.

i disagree?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 13 January 2016 20:14 (eight years ago) link

well sadder for a lot of the people around him and his destruction was self inflicted but i think it's always sad to see such a relentless unstoppable accelerated decline to oblivion.

yesterday a judge found that there was enough evidence to try phillips for his cellmate's murder so i guess he figured that was that.

chip kelly = new 49ers HC

(was about to say condolences to spottie & other niners fans but tbh sure he might be decent for that team, long as they keep him away from GM decisions?)

Apparently random caller on 97.5 today says that Shurmur's daughter attends the same school as his 13yo niece and was going around this afternoon telling people that her dad was the new Eagles headcoach.

I think the interesting fact is that the Rams were the first of the major sports teams to go west in '48. I'm sure in the early days of the NFL that was a fairly expensive trip by train most likely for the other clubs mostly in the midwest and east coast to take on, especially in the pre-TV days.

This absurdity makes last weekends game even better.

http://www.cincyjungle.com/2016/1/15/10777390/nfl-says-martavis-bryant-touchdown-should-not-have-counted-ryan

I still don't get why the hit on Bernard was ok, as I thought helmet to helmet contact was verboten.

Oh well...more stew for the pot.

earlnash, Saturday, 16 January 2016 09:57 (eight years ago) link

my understanding is that helmet to helmet is okay once the receiver has become a rusher, which apparently happens as soon as they have definitively secured the football.
i think the rationale is that otherwise the runner could lower his head and draw a contact foul or otherwise have an unfair advantage against the defense by more or less legally spearing would-be tacklers.
imo they should change to no helmet to helmet contact for anyone and should allow for offensive helmet-to-helmet when the ref on the field thinks it's intentional

Copy rights, pleasing all star wars fans, hiring professionals. (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 16 January 2016 15:07 (eight years ago) link

leading with yr helmet aka spearing is against the rules regardless of if its helmet to helmet or not

lag∞n, Saturday, 16 January 2016 15:53 (eight years ago) link

i mean this "you have to make forcible contact with the very top of the helmet." exactly describes what happened he lowers his head and drives into him

lag∞n, Saturday, 16 January 2016 15:56 (eight years ago) link

and no helmet to helmet doesnt only apply to a defenseless reciver

lag∞n, Saturday, 16 January 2016 16:04 (eight years ago) link

Either way the refs again in a big game lost control of the game and at least partially decided the winner by missed calls or no calls.

Watching the Burfict play again, I think part of it is just Burfict is going balls out and Brown's head fell awkward into his line of fire after the awkward leap to get to get the high pass. I'd say it was more manslaughter than premeditated. I do kinda see the angle Deon says that Burfict did seem to try to angle away a bit at last second. I think in hindsight of time, I think it was more of a fluke play than perhaps in the heat of the game it seemed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tfLncD3pGM

I do think the Steelers got off WAY easy for bad sportsmanship, as they obviously just as guilty of creating that atmosphere and that shit got clear coated in how it ended. I think there definitely could have been an unsportsmen like penalty against Pittsburgh in the aftermath of the Burfict hit. To keep it even, that's probably what should have happened. I might be forgetting one, but it might have been the wildest and most controversial playoff game since the Pats/Raiders tuck game.

earlnash, Saturday, 16 January 2016 20:05 (eight years ago) link

As for today's games, I can't see KC beating NE. It could happen, but I would have to see it happen to believe it injuries to the Pats or not. Pats have had a week to get healthy and if they get up a couple scores, I don't think KC has the firepower to catch up. Pats will have to give up a couple turnovers for the Chiefs a win.

Green Bay definitely looked more like their first half of the season form. I think AZ is more talented even with laying the egg in week 17. I could see it being a bit of a shootout, but probably not like that crazy game they played a few years back in the playoffs. I just think the Cardinals are a better club and they looked great the weeks leading up to the end of the season.

earlnash, Saturday, 16 January 2016 20:12 (eight years ago) link

they were both dirty hits, but brown didn't even have the ball/didn't need to be hit at all

mookieproof, Saturday, 16 January 2016 20:14 (eight years ago) link

you can see burfict adjusting to lay the hit even after the ball is gone. he has a couple strides where he can pull away but he ducks in instead.

Looked to me that Manning had a bit more zip on some of his passes than earlier this year. I think NE will probably stack in close and maybe try to force him to throw deep.

I think even as is, Denver has a better shot than KC did. Broncos got a better pass rush and skills guys. Got to figure Me is favorite but I could believe Denver could win.

yeah he was throwing tons of wobblers that were "catchable" but increased the difficulty curve for the receiver.

I was impressed with Ben though, given the grade of horse tranquilizers he was probably on

all credit goes to Denver's defense but seriously, I've never seen them give up so many 20+ yard plays on totally uncovered guys all this season

felt like in both den-pit & az-gb the better qb should have won the game but mysterious forces (tipped passes, dropped INTs, bad fumbles) swung the game away from them

Arizona's touchdown drive that ate up most of the 4th quarter was one of the most painful I've ever had to watch as a Packer fan - I counted two picks that were dropped, two 3rd downs picked up by less than an inch, a bunch of missed offensive holding calls, and a touchdown thrown off a lineman's helmet. GB's had some real frustrating playoff losses since the SB win.

frogbs, Monday, 18 January 2016 23:27 (eight years ago) link

the missed calls were v bad.

giving up that 75 yard play in the OT game-winning drive was also v bad.
