Absolute rubbish and a CD that seems to have been just thrown together in an AandR brainstorming session....By david on 12 Aug. 2015Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The Symphony in Three Movements is only out-mediocred by Jonathon Nott on a Tudor SACD which is the pits. In a work where the strange dreamlike central movement seems only just more taut and energetic than the outer movements, one has to shake one's head in disbelief. The opening of this work has to hit you between the ears like an iron fist and neither this conductor, or this once great orchestra, or the brittle sounding recording, deliver. It is like being mauled by a dead sheep (to borrow Dennis Healey's description of Geoffrey Howe in the House of Commons) and when the energy must come back relentlessly - like a million soldiers on the march or a savage blitz krieg - in the last movement like a coiled spring uncoiling - then nothing here suggests this a war symphony born out of the war years.
If this is Boulez's take on it, I pity the lack of depth.
Go to Gibson/Scottish National Orchestra in Chandos, in stirring form if bright early digital sound. Or, for the full audiophile bees knees, from the golden age of analogue stereo, the 1960 Everest recording with Goossens and the superior London Symphony in the perfect acoustic of Walthamstow Assembly Hall. This must be one of the most visceral brutal sound recordings ever made of a piece of classical music. Given the correct heavyweight Japanese amplifier, big speakers, nice room, and unfussy neighbours, you will get a full bone crunching experience which this symphony should be and not the simpering pot of slop as presented on this apology of a performance by Boulez and the BPO on DG in 1999.
Get it in a well filled disc, with two other celebrated reference recordings of Stravinsky, on Philips Legendary Classics 422 303-2 (released 1989)or the Vanguard/Omega series of Everest reissues EVC 9042 (released 1996) both digital transfers were taken from original master tapes. The Philips includes the Petrouchka and in addition the Woody Herman dedicated and played here, delightful Ebony Concerto.
There is a great new recording of the Symphony of Psalms with Robert Craft on Naxos 8.557504 (released 2006) which groups this meditative work with other Stravinsky choral pieces in an interesting sympathetic programme. The Symphony of Winds - the classic Colin Davis/English Chamber Orchestra recording on L'Oiseau Lyre/Decca is still the best available.
There are definitive performances of the other two works

I'm not sure americans could be able to understand Salo, since they live in a much simpler world than the rest of mankind. I don't think Salo is about good and evil. But it's obvious the 4 men are looking for God; trying desperatly to get an answer from Him, by torturing other human beings. For me it's a very religious and deeply edificating film. More than a critic to fascism, I see a critic to the need of absolute, a critic to religion, politics, justices, and society altogether.
