NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Miamis, led by brothers James and Thomas Wynbrandt, were legends in New York in the 1970s, playing shows at CBGB, Max’s Kansas City, and the Mudd Club with artists like Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, and even KISS. A Miamis show was the show to see. But, while the crowds loved them, the record business couldn’t decide whether they were pop or punk. Luckily, the band recorded material — with producers like Craig Leon (Ramones) and Genya Ravan in studios including Plaza Sound and Electric Lady. Plus, their live prowess was captured on tape.
Omnivore Recordings is proud to finally “introduce” the Miamis to the world with We Deliver: The Lost Band of the CBGB Era (1974-1979). Twenty-three tracks of the best music you’ve never heard. Street date is January 29, 2016.
The best of the band’s studio material is collected here, as well as demos and live tracks from CBGB — including a cover of Sinatra’s “That’s Life,” recorded two years before Sid Vicious would tackle “My Way.”
The set also features vintage memorabilia, photos by renowned photographer Bob Gruen, and extensive liner notes. The compilation was produced by Jesse Lauter (Bob Dylan in the 80s), the Wynbrandts’ cousin, who discovered his family connection to the Miamis while attending college in New York City decades after the group had disbanded. After carefully transferring the existing tapes, he had the material re-mastered and restored by Grammy®-winning engineer Michael Graves.

This era produced some of the bands most iconic work to date, releasing multiple charting singles including "Right to Work", Chelsea's debut single which was included in Mojo magazine's list of the best punk rock singles of all time. Sammy Walker: Mid-1970s
HAYESVILLE, N.C. — For a guy whose musical moment rose and fell about as fast as a cloudburst, the story of folk singer-songwriter Sammy Walker’s career carries more twists than a tornado. The latest comes in the form of a April 8, 2016 Ramseur Records release titled Brown Eyed Georgia Darlin’.
One could call this vinyl LP and CD combo package a follow-up to his 2008 Ramseur album, Misfit Scarecrow — except that it predates that material by more than three decades. Recorded in the mid-1970s at New York’s famed Record Plant, Brown Eyed Georgia Darlin’ contains the previously unreleased demos that earned Walker a contract with Warner Bros. Records. How he got there — and from there to here — is one of those crazy music-biz tales that makes you wonder whether to laugh or cry. The best approach, it turns out, is to take a cue from his songs. The humor and heartache they contain are as real as it gets.
And if the true test of a folk talent is the ability to write topical songs that somehow sound timeless — and, for better or worse, remain uncannily relevant decades after their birth — Walker scores a perfect 100. Just check out this lyric from “A Cold Pittsburgh Morning”:
Now this day and time it’s almost come to be a crime to be old in this here country/feeding on decrepit health to fatten up the purse of wealth. God knows it.
Walker wrote that at 23 after reading a newspaper story; his lines convey every shiver, every ounce of despair his sad subject endured, magnified against the celebratory excess of a football-crazy city on game day. It’s the epitome of a folk song, raising awareness about an injustice while contextualizing it as a compelling narrative.
But back to Walker’s story: A Georgia native now living in North Carolina, he recorded two albums in the 1970s for Moe Asch’s Folkways Records (now Smithsonian Folkways), and two more for Warner Bros. Renowned folkie Phil Ochs, who produced Walker’s first, 1975’s Broadside Ballads, Vol. 8: Song for Patty, championed his Dylan-meets-Arlo-and-Woody voice and formidable songsmithing skills to Warner head Mo Ostin even before the album’s release. After hearing these demos — during the Springsteen/Buckley/Wainwright/Prine era when every label was on the hunt for the next “new Dylan” — Ostin snapped him up.
“Phil liked to say, ‘This guy’s better than Dylan.’ Of course, there ain’t nobody better than Dylan,” Walker says, “but Phil heard something he was impressed with. I think he saw in me more of himself than he did [in] Bob Dylan.”
Though you might swear it’s Dylan — or Arlo — singing “Talkin’ Women’s Lib,” it’s worth noting that the talking-blues style predated both.
“Of course, I idolized Dylan when I was a teenager and that led me to Woody and Ochs and Tom Paxton and all those people,” Walker says. “But the way I played and sang wasn’t an imitation, it was just the way I sounded.”
Walker started playing guitar at 13 and began writing songs a few years later. His first performance occurred at the Last Resort, a folk club in Athens, Ga.
“On the weekends they’d have people like Steve Goodman and Townes Van Zandt, and on the weekdays, they’d hire somebody like me and pass the hat,” he recalls. “The first time I ever played, I got about $18 and I thought, ‘Lord, people are paying me to get onstage and caterwaul.’ It just kind of went from there.”
An apartment-building janitor by day, Walker was content to perform in Georgia clubs at night. But then the building changed hands and the staff was fired. With no backup plan, he decided to send a homemade tape to Broadside magazine, the influential folk publication that often printed worthy lyrics. He says he didn’t expect a response, and didn’t get one — for a while.
When he did, it was huge. The magazine not only published his lyrics, but co-founder Gordon Friesen also sent the tape to influential New York DJ Bob Fass, creator of WBAI radio’s popular overnight show, “Radio Unnameable.” Fass, considered a father of free-form radio, started playing Walker nightly, then invited him to come on the show. So Walker got on a train and headed north.
The day after he went on the air, the Weavers’ Lee Hays and Ochs both requested meetings. He met Ochs at the Broadside office, where he performed just a few songs before Ochs committed to helping Walker connect with Folkways. “He went to Moe Asch and talked him into making a record with me,” Walker says in his typically self-deprecating manner.
Walker, who admits in the Georgia Darlin’ liner notes that the only musical ambition he ever harbored was to make a Folkways record, still sounds surprised that it happened, much less what followed. While Ochs pushed Walker to Warner, Harold Leventhal caught wind of his talents. The legendary manager of Woody and Arlo Guthrie and the Weavers was hunting for someone to play Woody in the film version of Bound for Glory. Hays suggested Walker. Broadside co-founder Sis Cunningham accompanied him to her pal Leventhal’s office and harmonized as Walker sang Guthrie.
“Harold got real excited and wanted to send me out to Hollywood for a screen test, but the director, Hal Ashby, said he wasn’t gonna work with no unknown,” reports Walker. (The part went to David Carradine.) But Leventhal became his manager and negotiated Walker’s Warner contract, on the strength of these mostly one-take demos. Nik Venet produced his self-titled Warner debut, released in 1976 (and featuring stellar backing by James Burton and Jim Gordon, among others). Los Angeles Times critic Robert Hilburn declared it one of the year’s most noteworthy debuts.
Sadly, label-limbo realities set in before Walker recorded its 1977 follow-up, Blue Ridge Mountain Skyline. With disco and new wave on the rise, Warner did little to promote either one, and, the artist says, as much as he liked Leventhal, a younger, hungrier manager might have pushed harder for him. Walker lacked even a booking agent, though he did score a European tour in ’78.
When he got home, he learned Warner had dropped him. He tried to find another home, but even smaller labels wouldn’t sign someone who didn’t move units on a major label.
Walker did Songs From Woody’s Pen, an album of Guthrie covers, for Folkways in 1979, a year after he moved to the Catskills town of Stamford. And that seemed to be it. “It just kind of all fell apart before it really got off the ground for me,” he sighs. “I couldn’t even make a living. I had to take a job at a convenience store.”
He spent 17 years behind that counter, performing only when someone requested his presence. During a 1985 appearance, he got an offer to tour Italy, and did 18 Italian and Austrian dates. When he returned three years later, someone recorded the show that became Sammy Walker in Concert, released in 1990 by Swiss label Brambus Records. Walker, who never stopped writing, released a second Brambus recording, Old Time Southern Dream, in 1994.
In 1996, Walker and his wife moved to North Carolina to care for his mother. Three years later, Dolph Ramseur called. “He said he knew my music and he asked me to play at his 30th birthday party. And we became friends.”
Ramseur wasn’t yet involved in the music business, but was interested in breaking in, and asked if Walker had any music nobody had heard. He got the demo tapes.
A year later, Ramseur Records was born — and rapidly built success with the Avett Brothers and other artists. Misfit Scarecrow followed. And now, a year after Walker started collecting Social Security, comes the release that should have launched a bigger career.
Arthritis has ended his playing days, but the music lives — and with Brown Eyed Georgia Darlin’, Sammy Walker is about to be discovered all over again.

“Communication is about the way images determine our view of the world and how electronic media is going to change the content of our society."

Said legendary ex-Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos of his debut solo album when it was released back in 2003. It was a pivotal moment in technological times and by extension cultural ones, the world of digital was no longer a on-the-horizon vision only brought to realisation by pioneers and visionaries – such as Bartos – but it was instead almost here, around the corner and facing everyone square in the face. Communication was an attempt to capture these changing, perhaps unknown, times and distil them through the voice of someone who most would feel comfortable being led into the future with.

Thirteen years down the line, Bartos is re-releasing the album complete with a pristine re-mastering. Due to record label frugality, and perhaps being somewhat overshadowed by the coincidental return of his ex-band and their Tour de France Soundtrack album at the same time, Communication was unable to take the momentum and energy of the material on the album and process it into a spirited public campaign, leaving it to often be referred to as Bartos’ ‘Lost Album’.

The re-release, which will be the first time the album is available digitally, also comes with the previously un-included track ‘Camera Obscura’, which sounds like it could have been a lost track from Kraftwerk’s Computer World era.

As you would expect from the man responsible for co-writing such Kraftwerk masterpieces and musical compositions - that have gone on to shape the current musical world as we know it. Communication contains plenty of melody-driven numbers that operate in a dual universe of pop and electronica.

A record that embodies change in both a personal and wider context - the lead single ‘Life’ perhaps being the most perfect representation of this: “finally, I have to get on with my life” he sings. Lyrically it speaks volumes but sonically it almost seems to pay a return thank you to New Order in its breezy, harmonious yet infectious structure. New Order being a group clearly in admiration of Bartos’ work in and out of Kraftwerk and also in which the pair (Bartos and Bernard Sumner) would work together under the guise of Electronic, along with Johnny Marr in 1996.

Allan Fraser & Daisy DeBolt met in the summer of 1969. They had both been working individually on the coffeehouse circuit in their native Canada; over the next five years, as the duo of Fraser & DeBolt, they created a sublime body of work that still sounds remarkably fresh decades later. New press release from Dais Records clarifies the reissue tie-in with the shows I already posted about:

On January 22, 2016, the entire catalog of Psychic TV/PTV3 will be available digitally through Dais Records. Many for the first time ever in digital format outside of the bands USB stick, a self released edition of 300 which came out last year.

LOS ANGELES - In 1978, the Cars had a Top 40 hit with the band's very first single, "Just What I Needed." That streak continued over the next 10 years, as the band revisited the Top 40 a dozen more times with radio hits "Let's Go" and "Shake It Up" along with iconic videos like "Magic" and "You Might Think," which won MTV's first-ever "Video Of The Year" award in 1984.

The five original members - Ric Ocasek, the late Benjamin Orr, Greg Hawkes, Elliot Easton and David Robinson - recorded six studio albums together - all of them with Elektra Records - and have sold more than 23 million albums in the U.S. alone.

Rhino will release two new collections in the spring to honor The Cars' vast musical legacy. The first is a boxed set featuring all six of the band's Elektra studio albums. The second is a single-disc, career-spanning collection curated by The Cars that combines the group's best songs along with a trio of rare and unreleased alternate versions.

THE ELEKTRA YEARS 1978-1987 includes six studio albums, each one presented in a replica sleeve with original artwork. Ric Ocasek oversaw digital remastering for the set, while drummer David Robinson - who helped create The Cars' iconic album covers through the years - served as art director. The six-disc collection will be available March 11 on CD ($39.98) and digitally. On Tuesday June 7, a limited edition vinyl version of the boxed set will be available with each 180-gram LP pressed on a different color vinyl.

The extensive set retraces the band's musical journey in the studio and includes: The Cars (1978), Candy-O (1979), Panorama (1980), Shake It Up (1981), Heartbeat City, (1984) and Door To Door (1987). Among the 60 tracks are the band's biggest hits - "My Best Friend's Girl," "Good Times Roll," "You Are The Girl," and "Drive."

MOVING IN STEREO: THE BEST OF THE CARS will be available on May 6 on CD ($18.98) and as a 2-LP set on 180-gram vinyl ($34.98). The collection is produced by the band, with all surviving members contributing to song selection. Ocasek also supervised digital remastering of all the audio with Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound.

The collection features the band's big hits along with a rare, single mix for "I'm Not The One," as well as a live version of "Everything You Say," and a new mix by producer Philippe Zdar of "Sad Song," a track from the band's last album, 2011's Move Like This.

Behold: Träd, Gräs och Stenar, the supreme Swedish leaders of TRANSCENDENTAL PSYCHEDELIC ROCK MUSIC.

They were from Sweden, they were pioneers of DIY culture, they jammed with force and purpose for 40 minutes back when “legendary” SF groups or German kraut rock bands were still struggling to get out of the upper single digits with dignity; they traveled with organic food they grew themselves, and cooked for everyone they played to; they made their own instruments, amplifiers and PAs before there was such a thing as a PA; they released records themselves, y’know back when the Dead were still on a major label. Had this band been from the USA rather than some provincial northern European nation… never mind, it’s too depressing to finish this sentence.

There was the occasional complex ingredient like a (home-brewed, natch) tremolo or fuzz pedal, but the way this band worked was incredibly simple: they’d show up, set up on some floor, or field, start up the generators, instruments, then begin to collectively tune themselves into the sphere we now know as TRANSCENDENTAL PSYCHEDELIC ROCK MUSIC. After that first meditative or explosive - or both - lengthy jam, they’d again take off, starting from a cover of "Mighty Quinn" or perhaps "Last Time", or one of their own compositions, often influenced by ancient Swedish folk songs, and leave the melody behind after a few verses and travel to places ‘beyond time and place’. It was a little like Ornette Coleman’s or The Velvet Underground’s live formula: you know the beginning and the end, but what exists between those two points is what makes life worth living: the magical improvised unknown.

Luckily Anthology Recordings recently invaded the home of Jakob Sjöholm, the youngest member of the original band. Going through his attic, we unearthed hours upon hours of unreleased live recordings from the time, from which we’ve selected a trove of truly unreal jams. And this is the material you will find on the third 2xLP, Kom Tillsammans (Come Together), an artifact only available in the deluxe 6LP boxed set, which is also chock full of choice ephemera no one has ever seen before.

Djungelns Lag and Mors, Mors were re-issued on CD back in 2002, but they’ve been out of print for years, were never available digitally, nor reissued on vinyl. The band toured the US briefly in 2004 and 2005. These were spellbinding concerts featuring the same classic line-up from the recordings you’re about to devour: Bo Anders, Jakob, Thomas Mera Gartz, and Torbjörn Abelli. Sadly, Torbjörn and Thomas have since passed away, but the band is actually still active today. And while Bo Anders isn’t part of it anymore, the singular force that is Reine Fiske from DUNGEN, is now a member.

You need to listen to this un-dogmatic and timelessly organic music, and then you need to spread the gospel. This is music that already exists within you, based on simple human truths and chords, grounded in the principle that instinct will always triumph over virtuosity. It is truly free and open and joyous music, as humble as it is ferocious. Träd, Gräs och Stenar simply is The Answer.

Too bad about the Cars box - if they weren't going to include b-sides, alt. mixes, etc., why even bother doing it? It's not like any of those albums are hard to find.

Only the first three have been remastered, and even then that was like 15 years ago...the latter LPs were done in the '80s.

...but still, all the missing extras would fit on one disc, tops. It's not that hard catalogue managers!

THROUGHOUT FEBRUARY GREENSLEEVES REISSUES KEY '70S REGGAE & DUB TITLES FROM JAMAICAN MUSICAL MASTERMINDS GLEN BROWN, AUGUSTUS PABLO AND HORACE ANDY

Throughout February (Jamaica's Reggae Month), Greensleeves will honor reggae icons Glen Brown, Augustus Pablo and Horace Andy by reissuing their key titles from the 1970s era. Each collection has been revamped with crisp remastered sound as well as deluxe package with extended liner notes. These reggae must-haves will be available on all formats - including vinyl, CD and digital platforms.

On Feb 12, Greensleeves will reissue three crucial LPs - Boat To Progress, Check The Winner & Dubble Attack - from the seminal Jamaican singer and producer Glen Brown. The titles were originally recorded for his record label Pantomime between 1970-74 and released on Greensleeves in 1989. A quarter of a century later, they will be available on all formats (digital, vinyl and CD) completely remastered with an extended 12-page booklet (including the original liner notes written by Harry Wise) and artwork by Tony McDermott. Each album showcases Brown's diverse range of talents during the prime of his career. Brown was known for his distinct voice, which can be heard on Boat To Progress, the 14-track set showcasing Brown as both a singer and producer plus a variety of all-star vocalists. On Check The Winner, his instrumental dub selection, fans can hear his superb roots reggae productions and sublime dub B-sides. He had an appreciation for jazz music, hence the use of expressive horn sections throughout his work. The "Rhythm Master" also had a knack for deejay music (as seen on Dubble Attack), nurturing some of the top artists who adapted this new "toasting" vocal style in the 1970s. Dubble Attack is the ultimate deejay collection of carefully-selected songs that were recorded at Pantomime and engineered by King Tubby.

On Feb 19, Greensleeves reissues Augustus Pablo’s classic album Original Rockers. Pablo is the master of melodica and one of the most revered talents in reggae music. Greensleeves originally released the LP in 1979 and hand picked Pablo's best self-productions from his early days between (1972-75) - mostly consisting of well-received instrumentals and versions of older hits from Studio One. Original Rockers boasts Pablo's haunting melodica and includes flashes of his dub inspiration on standouts like "Rocker's Dub" and "Tubby's "Dub Song." The album is recorded in the legendary studio of the great reggae producer King Tubby. Reggae all-stars like guitarist Earl Chinna Smith, bassists Robbie Shakespeare and Aston Barrett and select vocalists like Dillinger and Hugh Mundell all shine on this collection.

Greensleeves will reissue Horace Andy’s 1977 In The Light and its Prince Jammy dub companion on the Jamaican Rastafarian singer’s birthday (Feb. 19). Horace Andy's profile is already legendary in reggae circles (known for his early 70s hits with Coxsone Dodd, Bunny Lee and more) and has been internationally raised by his work with British trip-hop legends Massive Attack in the 90s until present day. The In The Light collection, which is rightly regarded as one of Andy's strongest testaments, includes newly commissioned sleeve notes by Noel Hawks and exclusive photos in the packaging. In 1977, Horace Andy moved to Hartford, Connecticut from Jamaica and recorded this legendary album for Everton Dasilva. The two forged a musical partnership, but it came to an erupt stop two years later when Dasilva was murdered in NYC. In 1995, the revered label Blood & Fire also reissued this classic.

Local H will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their sophomore album by playing 'As Good As Dead' in its entirety during a weekend of hometown shows at Metro in Chicago on Friday, April 15th (18+ show) and Saturday, April 16th (all ages).

The two-man band will first play a short set of songs culled from last year’s widely praised album, 'Hey, Killer', along with music from their other six studio albums and EPs. After a brief intermission, they will return to the stage and play 'As Good As Dead' from start to finish. There will be no opening act. Individual show tickets and weekend packages, including entry to an intimate, acoustic set on Saturday afternoon, will be available.

'As Good As Dead', Local H’s second full-length album, was produced by Steven Haigler (Quicksand, Pixies) and was originally released on April, 16, 1996 on Island Records on CD and cassette. The record was the band’s first foray into making a concept album and is centered around life in a dead-end, small town. Venerable rock critic Robert Christgau gave the album a stellar A- review in the Village Voice, writing, at the time, “...I wish Pearl Jam, whose leader stars in the title song, packed such isometric power -- that sense of tremendous force bravely exerted against implacable reality -- and I say the exercise makes all of us stronger.”

“The question I get asked the absolute most is when are we gonna put the older records out on vinyl?” says Local H frontman, Scott Lucas. “Here's the answer -- in the best possible way. The package is looking pretty good and I'm ALMOST as excited as anybody to finally drop the needle on this album -- on double vinyl, at last.”

'As Good As Dead' spawned four modern rock radio hits including the above-referenced “Eddie Vedder,” “Fritz’s Corner,” “High-Fivin’ MF” and “that copacetic song” -- “Bound for the Floor,” a track that remains a staple on alternative radio station playlists around the the country two decades later. The band made videos for each of the singles.

Local H, whose members during this time period were Lucas and original drummer Joe Daniels, toured the U.S. non-stop for two years after As Good As Dead was released, headlining their own small and large club shows; opening for Silverchair in bigger venues and Stone Temple Pilots in even bigger arenas (including Madison Square Garden in New York and Rosemont Horizon in Chicago); and performing to audiences of thousands at radio station festivals across the the country, including 1997‘s HFStival at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. They toured Australia and played some played some European shows on this album, as well.

Fela Ransome Kuti is best known as the revolutionary pioneer of Afrobeat music. Born in 1938, Kuti spent his life as a trailblazer creating incendiary music and furthering radical politics. At the beginning of his musical career in the early '60s, Kuti formed his first band, Koola Lobitos. Koola Lobitos were the first expression of Kuti's incredible talent, the start of his musical evolution that led to the Afrobeat movement. As such, Knitting Factory Records is reissuing Highlife-Jazz and Afro-Soul (1963-1969), a collection of recordings that provide unique insight into the beginnings of Kuti's craft. This three-disc set lays bare Kuti's genius experimentation, honing his instincts while trying out new styles and combinations.

The musical style called Highlife first started in Ghana in the early part of the 20th century and spread throughout West Africa over several decades. Highlife melds elements of traditional African music and Jazz into an upbeat, danceable genre. One could understand Kuti's attraction to the mix of Jazz structures, syncopated guitar lines and off-beat drums.

Kuti's Koola Lobitos became a popular dance band in his native Lagos, Nigeria, recording many singles for local labels, Parlophone, Phillips and an album for EMI. The tracks on these recordings evolve from Highlife to soul to hints of what would become Afrobeat. The listener is able to witness the startling evolution of a man intent on finding his own voice and style. The collection encompasses three discs with Disc One focusing on singles, Disc Two on the album recorded for EMI and Disc Three on live and other recordings.

The liner notes, written by Michael E. Veal, Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at Yale University, point out: "The release of this collection of Fela Ransome-Kuti's pre-Afrobeat music is a major event for fans of both Fela's music and African popular music in general. Many of these recordings...were thought to be lost forever and certainly, were unknown to all but the most fervent Fela enthusiasts. Even these enthusiasts had to endure low fidelity tapes that had been copied over innumerable generations, from original recordings that were not themselves of the highest quality. What little has been known of Fela's highlife period has been largely due to the efforts of Mr. Benson Idonije, Fela's early manager and long-time proponent of his highlife music. With the recordings' sound quality now much improved, this comprehensive collection gives an overview into a period when one of Africa's finest musicians was attempting to find a style of his own. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated record collectors who assembled this compilation, a crucial and fascinating chapter of Fela's career is finally available to African music enthusiasts around the world."

Local H had a terrific late 90s single called "All the Kids Are Right," but that's the last time I ANYONE ever paid attention to them.

I do like how they point out their ubiquity at radio station concerts...seems like they were a perennial undercard at Buzzfests of yore.

BTW that Miamis collection is garbage. There's a reason why some bands were "lost." All the positive quotes from more famous CBGBs luminaries is clearly a case of you had to be there...on drugs. Many, many drugs. In retrospect, it's remarkable that more of those CBGBs bands were not just as terrible.

Still haven't listened to the Miamis, still hoping they won't be a waste. The Ork box (on Spotify) is much better that I suspected.

“Who knew how warm the islands would be...” Ten years on, Islands is celebrating the release of their seminal debut album Return to the Sea with a classy anniversary reissue due on November 11. Islands has also announced NYC and LA shows where the album will be played in full, featuring a string section and special guests from the album's heyday. Tickets for the NYC and Los Angeles shows are on sale this Friday. Return to the Sea, which is available to pre-order now at BandCamp, has been given a light but firm remaster on all formats; pressed to 2x 180 gram vinyl at 45rpm, it has never sounded better. The artwork has received a tasteful touch-up, with gatefold, printed inner sleeves, archival photos never before released, and an in-depth essay about the album’s creation by Mr. Diamonds himself. The following excerpts are the first and last paragraphs from that essay:

“On December 31st, 2004, I flew down to Los Angeles from Campbell River, B.C. I was at a puzzling intersection: A few days earlier, my band, the Unicorns, had finally combusted onstage in Houston, Texas. I'd just turned twenty-three. I had thrown all of my possessions on the sidewalk a year prior and now had nowhere to live. I was adrift. My friend Adam Gollner convinced me to come down to LA, where he was writing and researching his first book. The idea was to clear my head and get some sun for two weeks. It ended up raining torrentially every day. After the rain cleared, I invited my former bandmate Jamie Thompson to join me. We spent the next three months in LA plotting our next move, knowing we wanted to continue playing music together after the dissolution of the Unicorns....

...For years, I maintained a distance to this record, and considered overhauling it entirely. After Jamie and I had assembled the band to perform the songs live in the fall of 2005, I wanted to re-record everything with them. When the 10th anniversary of the record’s release started rolling around in the spring of 2016, I strongly considered doing a reimagined remix, losing excess instrumentation and caking my vocals in a more professional gloss. For ages I bristled at the record’s flaws; my squeaky, earnest vocals, drums and guitars that sounded meek when I wanted them to sound heavy, precious lyrics, naive melodies. No, this record isn’t anywhere near perfect, and nor should anything earthly be. I’ve only started to realize that this record’s imperfections are exactly what cradles its meaning and curiosities, its heart and spirit. Here it is again. Back in my arms or under my wings, the waves licking our ankles, ready to head back out again. Don’t forget to lift the locked groove.”

After releasing not one but TWO albums on the same day earlier this year, Islands are hitting the road for their second major tour of 2016. The upcoming tour will include shows in stops in Austin, New Orleans, Atlanta, Nashville, Denver and more. Taste, Islands’ sixth record, is a muscular, crystalline affair, with the majority of the music electronic, buoyed by drum machines, programming and arpeggiated vintage synths. The songs still flirt with Islands’ bread and butter; evergreens such as ennui, remorse, and a general disenchantment with the modern world hover over the tracks, with lines like “we got so thrown, we felt lost at home” and “steal a little moment, lose it like you own it”, to hammer home the point. The songs cut a wide swath, however, and also go in directions that Islands has never tackled, including police brutality and white male privilege (!).

Should I Remain Here At Sea? (a semi-reference to Tarkovsky’s "Solaris") Islands’ seventh album is, in many ways, a spiritual sequel to the debut album, 2006’s Return to the Sea; a natural, raw record, stripped down to it’s essentials, performed live off the floor. Reflecting on the decade that has elapsed, SIRHAS kicks off with a darkly funny tartness, tackling religion, race, addiction, and murderous fantasies, but by midpoint, the songs give way to a resigned and doleful melancholia, tackling heartache, numb disillusionment and emotional disorientation through the guise of stupid parrots, the Internet, sea turtles and perhaps the loneliest maritimer to ever sail the seas. It was recorded as spontaneously as could be, with some of the songs captured live in one take, vocals and all.

Love Is A Drag, The 1962 LP of Love Songs By Men, For Men, to be Reissued
on Gold Vinyl for Record Store Day November 25th

The once shocking LP that bore no vocalist’s name for over 50 years reveals its secrets in the 2016 Modern Harmonic reissue. A Big Band singer, a Hollywood photographer, and an LGBT music and history archivist are at the heart of the story behind Love Is A Drag, the 1962 LP of love songs by men, for men, which remained a mystery for over fifty years.

It starts with JD Doyle, a historian and archivist of LGBT music and history that came upon the record, which resonated with him almost immediately. The songs took classic standards like “The Man I Love” and “Mad About That Boy,” songs that were intended to be from a woman to a man, and changed it from a man to a man. Doyle had the record in his collection for decades and would play the songs on his radio show, Queer Music Heritage.

The album fascinated Doyle, and he knew these songs were truly before their time. It was because of this, he couldn’t help but be mystified as to why there was not an artist or producer named on the album. A single line of subtext wrote, “For Adult Listeners Only, Sultry Stylings by a Most Unusual Vocalist.”
Most likely, the record would have remained a mystery, until Murray Garrett reached out to Doyle ready to come forward with the truth about the album.

Garrett was a Hollywood photographer through the late 1940s to the 1970s, and photographed stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra. Through his photography career, he created a partnership with Gene Howard, a Big Band singer, and the two together worked closely with Jack Ames, the founder of Edison International Records.

When Ames asked Garrett and Howard if they had any ideas for a record that Edison International Records could release, Garrett remembered a performance he saw once in Greenwich Village of a man singing love songs addressed to another man in a serious way. That night was unforgettable as the performers of the day were extremely campy and dramatic.

Despite being straight and married to a woman, Howard agreed to sing on the record with a host of Los Angeles session musicians, and Ames released the record under a “fake” label called Lace Records to avoid Edison International being pigeonholed as a gay record label. The record sold well in Hollywood, and Frank Sinatra, Liberace, and Bob Hope were among some of its biggest advocates.

Now, with the mystery solved, and the masters purchased by Sundazed, Love is a Drag will be reissued by Modern Harmonic, available on gold vinyl, as well as a CD format, with original liner notes, and new notes from JD Doyle just in time for Record Store Day, November 26th.

Lee Hazlewood spent a good part of the late 1960s traveling the globe, cutting records and inking business deals. A string of hits with Nancy Sinatra enabled Lee to build a mini media empire Lee Hazlewood Industries and afforded him nearly unlimited resources…for a time. By the end of the decade LHI Records had burned piles of cash, gone through a half dozen distributors and failed to achieve the kind of chart success “Boots" had promised.

Fortunately for Lee there was a land where he was still on the top of the charts, a place where women flowed like Brannvin…Sweden was calling.

While on an LHI promotional tour in Stockholm, Lee crossed paths with Swedish director Torbjörn Axelman. “I met Lee through my script girl, in Stockholm in 1969,” remembers Axelman. "We noticed we had very many similarities, interests, and the same backgrounds. It led to many productions during our 38 years of close partnership and friendship.” The partnership showed Lee the way forward and allowed him an easy exit strategy from the LHI house of cards that was crumbling in Los Angeles.

Released as the last LHI LP, Cowboy in Sweden was a soundtrack to the 1970 cult classic film of the same name starring Lee Hazlewood. The film was a surreal psychedelic account of Lee’s journey to his new homeland, while the soundtrack was a perfect compilation of Hazlewood’s strongest songs recorded over a prolific globe trotting three year period. The late Jim Dickinson is one of the most eclectic personages rock n’roll has ever thrown up: a musical maverick. From Sun Records and Ardent Studios in the 1960s, to sessions with the Rolling Stones, Ry Cooder and Bob Dylan, significant productions of Big Star and the Replacements, and the twisted roots rock of his own Mud Boy & The Neutrons, the man was never, ever predictable.

A solo album had not been at the forefront of Jim Dickinson’s mind then, but once the idea was put in place by Jerry Wexler at Atlantic, he reacted conceptually, and with gusto. Dickinson always shot from the hip. He could be coarse on a rocker like “Wine,” or dignified and joyous when celebrating “The Strength of Love.” Inebriated laments like "Wild Bill Jones” contrast sharply with the carny talk of “O How She Dances,” and a shifting, indignant anti-war recitation entitled “John Brown.”

As a music maker who could relate equally to both the intellectual and the visceral aspects of popular culture, anything Dickinson lent his hand to was at least interesting and frequently rewarding. Such is the case with Dixie Fried, his solo debut from 1972. Unsuccessful upon release, the record now is now a cult item that, for many, mirrors the deliciously unexpected twists and turns of Dickinson’s subsequent career.

In 1967, the face of rock was changing. In that year alone there were debut albums from The Velvet Underground, The Doors, and Pink Floyd, to name a few. The Beatles had combined orchestration with their music—the result was Sgt. Peppers in June, the same month that Tim Buckley recorded Goodbye & Hello.

Buckley was no longer just another singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar; he was drenched in acid-folk tinges of harpsichord and harmonium. Lyricist Larry Beckett embellished Tim’s songs with introspective lyrics at times, worldly views at others. It was the first major triumph for Tim as an album artist, partially because there were a remarkable amount of pre-production demos that led to it.

Available here for the first time are these newly discovered master tapes, recorded by Goodbye & Hello’s producer Jerry Yester, along with an ultra-rare acetate, found to be in co-songwriter (and best friend) Beckett’s possession.

Of the 13 previously unreleased solo acoustic songs contained here, six of them did eventually appear with more expansive instrumentation on Goodbye & Hello (along with another four not included here). However, the crown jewel of this package is seven never-before-heard compositions. These will be new to even the most devoted Buckley fan. Arguably, two of them crept out decades after Tim’s death (albeit, much different recordings than what you have here) but with little fanfare.

So much has been written about Tim Buckley but so little of it by people who actually knew him. This booklet, however, includes a detailed interview with both Larry Beckett and Jerry Yester, providing real insight on how these recordings came to be and attempting to uncover the man behind all the myths, the real Tim Buckley.

Several rarities releases in the 1980s and ‘90s shed light on his talent, especially the live recordings, but all of the studio material has generally been alternative versions of songs that fans already knew—until now. This is the first-ever posthumous release that reveals a wealth of previously unreleased and unheard tracks from Tim at the peak of his career. In short, you need this!

Directed by TOBE HOOPER (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist) and adapted from the novel by STEPHEN KING, SALEM’S LOT originally aired as a two-part miniseries on CBS in 1979. Since then, the film has reached cult classic status and is regarded as one of the greatest vampire films ever made thanks to it’s creepy atmosphere, gripping story-line, and chilling climax.

Waxwork Records presents, for the first time ever on vinyl, the complete, re-mastered score of SALEM’S LOT. Featuring all 84 musical cues from the film, this two record set clocks in at over one hour of atmospheric, old-fashioned horror film music. Composed and conducted HARRY SUKMAN, the classic score to SALEM’S LOT was his final work before his death in 1984.

The classic 1967 film centers around Baron Boris Von Frankenstein (Boris Karloff) and a group of ghastly monsters including Frankenstein’s Monster, Count Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy, The Hunchback, The Invisible Man, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and more. Betty Harris’ The Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul features all of her classic deep soul, sister funk and northern soul songs recorded in New Orleans in the 1960s - all written, produced and arranged by the legendary Allen Toussaint, and featuring the cream of New Orleans musicians and the incredible Meters.

All of these singles featured here were released on Allen Toussaint and his business partner Marshall Sehorn’s local New Orleans label Sansu, widely distributed in the southern city but in only limited quantities elsewhere. As a consequence, Betty Harris’ music failed to achieve the commercial success of other New Orleans artists such as Lee Dorsey (who she recorded with) and The Meters (who backed her). And so at the end of the decade she stopped recording, retired from the music business to raise her family in Florida.

This is no reflection of the stunning musical quality of all these songs which encompass everything from southern soul, heavy funk, deep soul ballads and northern soul. Betty Harris has been a cornerstone of Soul Jazz Records’ New Orleans Funk and New Orleans Soul compilations.

Always soulful and always funky, Betty Harris’ music contains the essence of New Orleans music. She is the Lost Soul Queen of New Orleans.

In the half century since its release The Who’s debut album MY GENERATION has lost none of it’s raw visceral power and still stands as the ultimate musical declaration of teenage rebellion. The title track alone has been covered innumerable times by the likes of Oasis, Green Day, Patti Smith, Billy Joel, Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden amongst many more.

Back in 1965 the band were considered to be so dangerous that the tailors tasked with turning a Union Jack into a pop art mod jacket for the cover feared that they would be jailed for desecration of the nation’s flag.

The Who’s surly demeanour that day in 1965 at London’s Surrey Docks and the brazen appropriation of the symbol of state is the best advert possible for MY GENERATION It’s an album that sounds like it looks: terse, confrontational and full of youthful angst and energy.

Brunswick Records first issued MY GENERATION in the UK in December 1965, and later in the US, under the title THE WHO SINGS MY GENERATION, in April 1966. It was produced by Shel Talmy who shot to fame with his work with The Kinks, a group that the teenage Pete Townshend admired greatly.

During a break in touring in 2015 Pete Townshend discovered tapes in his audio archive featuring previously unheard demos for the album which also included three totally unreleased songs that the other members of The Who hadn’t ever even heard, ‘The Girls I Could Have Had’, ‘As Children We Grew’and ‘My Own Love’.

The spectacular 79-track five disc super-deluxe edition of MY GENERATION features these unheard songs as well as unreleased demos, unreleased alternate mixes, new remasters and a stereo remix which was created using new overdubs from Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. For this mix Pete used exactly the same guitars and amps as the original album and Roger used the same type of microphone.

The super deluxe edition also features a stunning 80-page colour book with many rare and unseen period photos, candid and insightful new notes from Pete Townshend and period memorabilia.

Of the super deluxe box set Pete Townshend commented “Gathering these demos for this collection has been enjoyable; it’s wonderful for me to have these tapes made fifty-two years ago to listen to. I hope you enjoy them. Sometimes, it doesn’t take very long to create something brilliant. When producer Robert Evans rejected Phillip Lambro’s original score for Chinatown, Jerry Goldsmith was hired to create another, from scratch, in just 10 days.

To say he rose to the challenge is an understatement. Goldsmith, a 20 year veteran of the TV and movie industry with credits including Dr Kildare, Planet Of The Apes and even The Waltons theme, turned in a work that was both a career peak for him and the saviour of Roman Polanski’s masterpiece of neo-noir.

What was clever about it? It wasn’t quite straight jazz, it wasn’t quite classical. It was identifiably a movie soundtrack, but an unusual one at that, leaning heavily on Uan Rasey’s mournful trumpet solos, sparingly using pianos, harps, strings and percussion, and employing sounds and crashes as overtures. It doesn’t try to speak to the film’s 1930s setting so much as to the mood and feel of the movie, a piece about political and moral corruption in a water-starved LA featuring Jack Nicholson at the absolute top of his game.

“I remember Evans speaking about the music having a contemporary feel, contemporary meaning the ‘30s,” Goldsmith said in an interview before his 2004 death. “I said, ‘Bob, I don’t think so – you see that on the screen, why should I do that in the underscore? … Emotions are timeless.’”

Originally released as a soundtrack in 1974, and long out of print, Cinewax’s reissue is remastered from the original tapes and is presented with brand new artwork by acclaimed illustrator and painter Sterling Hundley, with layout by Jay Shaw. Drop the needle and hear why Chinatown is, reportedly, David Lynch’s favorite soundtrack. Goldsmith was right about emotions…

They sort of did, or at least they quoted it a handful of times. Entwistle quoted it in his "5:15" bass solos in '99-'00.

Biggest disappointments of that set are no live material (there's some, not a lot, from that era), no High Numbers tracks, and the omission of a studio jam of indeterminate origin where the run through "Green Onions" and snake their way around to distinctly proto-Tommy progressions.

More predictable approach on this live '64 High Numbers set, which starts with "Gotta Dance"("to keep from cryin'"), original may or not be better, but here it's kind of ho-hum Frankie-Bobby teen idol fare, then an okay run at "You Really Got Me" and narsty "Smokestack Lightin", my fave rave here, uh-oh then they "Gotta Dance" again etc. (two shows?), so haven't listened to all of it yet, but some of it's cool so far (certainly better sound quality than I expected)

The French electronic music pioneer behind Black Devil Disco Club, released three seminal library albums in the seventies: Suspense (1975), Cosmos 2043 (1977) and The Strange World of Bernard Fevre (1977). A fourth album called Orbit Ceremony, produced just a few months after remained in his home studio and never saw the light; sentenced to almost 40 years in the devil’s vault. By chance, while working on the re-issues, Bernard Fevre recently found the original lost tapes of Orbit Ceremony, including the multi-tracks, which he remixed and remastered himself. Spacy moogs, weird clavinet, and cosmic analog drum machines: it’s all here. The quirky, cosmic library music found on this long deleted 70′s science-fiction-themed album if full of burbling synths and off-kilter melodies.

We are pleased to announce the debut of Platters du Cuyahoga, series 2. For this of you who subscribed to series 1 or bought one or more of the individual releases of that series, thank you!! For those new to the series, Platters du Cuyahoga is a deeply researched exploration into the unreleased and/or long-unavailable music of Northeast Ohio and each release explores the cultural happenings surrounding the area during the period 1966 through 1977 (or, thereabouts). Each of the 3 releases of series 1, ROBERT BENSICK BAND "French Pictures In London," MR. STRESS BLUES BAND "Live At The Brick Cottage 1972-1973," and X_X "Albert Ayler's Ghosts Live At The Yellow Ghetto" were the subject of much critical acclaim, fan interest, and radio spins. You don't want to miss out on series 2.

So, without further delay, the first of the three releases of series 2: the legendary and never before released 1967 studio demo from Schwartz Fox Blues Crusade "Sunday Morning Revival" is now available for presale. Here's the details:

Though once believed to have been lost or to only exist in theory, the lone recording by The Schwartz-Fox Blues Crusade featuring Mr. Stress - consisting of Cleveland legends Glenn Schwartz (guitar/vocals), Jimmy Fox (drums), Bill "Mr. Stress" Miller (vocals/harmonica), Tom Kriss (bass), Rich Kriss (guitar/vocals), and Mike Sands (piano) - is finally being released for music fans to savor and enjoy.

Taped one Sunday morning in the Spring of 1967, this is a piece of true Cleveland folklore that grew out of the Sunday jam sessions at the east side's The Coffeehouse. This recording could be considered a soundtrack for the University Circle district (a then gathering place for motorcycle gangs, beatniks, hippies, counter-culture personalities) as it became the center of Cleveland's underground from roughly 1965 through 1968.

Glenn Schwartz, Jimmy Fox, and Tom Kriss were three of the then five members of the James Gang who respectively played lead guitar, drums, and bass. By the spring of 1967 the James Gang were quickly becoming one of the most beloved bands in Cleveland and the surrounding areas. When Schwartz left the James Gang suddenly in late 1967 to eventually join Pacific Gas & Electric in California, his guitar pupil, Joe Walsh (The Eagles), took over for him and soon led the James Gang to international success.

Guitarist Rich Kriss was between being a member of Chuck Bates & The Barons (whose drummer, Steve Nemeth, would go on to local fame as progressive Cleveland radio DJ Doc Nemo) and The Joyful Wisdom, led by the late Dave Griggs who, next to Schwartz and Robert Jr. Lockwood, was considered one of the finest blues guitarists in Cleveland.

Blues harpist and vocalist Bill "Mr. Stress" Miller and pianist Mike Sands were members of an up and coming hard Chicago-style blues group called The Mr. Stress Blues Band. Formed in the late summer of 1966, the group would soon become a long running Cleveland institution through which such luminaries as Chrissie Hynde, Peter Laughner (Pere Ubu/Rocket From The Tombs), and Anton Fier (Feelies/Lounge Lizards/X__X) would pass through.

This fine piece of living, breathing Cleveland audio history is much more than just another blues jam session, and is the first entry of Smog Veil's continuing Platters du Cuyahoga series 2.

9 studio tracks of pure post-teen garage rock blues are accompanied by extensive liners and and never before published photos. The LP features colored vinyl, a free download code, and is limited to 1500 copies. Both the CD and the LP contains extensive liner notes penned by Nick Blakey and never before published photos.

Note that this release will ship on or before November 18, 2016. The CD and LP are done and we are awaiting shipment to our warehouse.

The three releases comprising Platters du Cuyahoga series 2 are: (1) Schwartz Fox Blues Crusade: "Sunday Morning Revival" (1967) (November 18, 2016 release date); (2) Allen Ravenstine: "Terminal Drive" (1975) (spring 2017 release); and (3) a soon to be announced double LP release of studio and live recordings from the first and most influential improvisational electronic outfit that called Cleveland home (1972-1973 recordings) (spring 2017 release). All the releases will be formatted on vinyl as well as CD and download/streaming. A hallmark of the series will be that each release contains extensive liner notes, all carefully crafted and researched.

Telefon Tel Aviv is an experimental electronic duo formed in 1999 by two New Orleans high-school friends, Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper. Following years of playing in various local bands and learning the ropes of electronic music production, Eustis and Cooper wrote the demos for what would become Telefon Tel Aviv in 1999. After sending them to John Hughes III, who operated the Chicago-based Hefty Records, they were offered an album deal in January 2000. They spent the rest of that year writing their debut album, Fahrenheit Fair Enough, released in September 2001, as well as the soundtrack for the movie New Port South, written by Hughes’ brother James and released the same year.
Shaped by a diverse set of influences that included British electronic music (Autechre, Aphex Twin, Jega) and Black American music (house, techno, bounce rap), Telefon Tel Aviv were the latest in a growing lineup of American musicians that sought to carve their own lane and add something meaningful to a growing international conversation about what the meeting point between hip-hop, soul, and electronic music could be. But while Eustis and Cooper emerged within a specific context that provided their continuing work with a solid foundation, they spent the next decade taking risks and grappling with the idea of what an electronic duo could be.
In 2004, they released their second LP, Map Of What Is Effortless, a bold attempt at solidifying the romantic elements of their debut into a modern r&b sound and featuring vocal contributions from Damon Aaron and Lindsay Anderson. Three years later, Hefty released a compilation of Telefon Tel Aviv remixes that included their take on Nine Inch Nails, Ammoncontact, Slicker, and Apparat among others.
In 2009, ten years after they first began working together, the duo returned with Immolate Yourself, via Ellen Alien's BPitch Control label. Darker and synth-driven, this third album took yet another dramatic left turn, this time towards a more unabashedly pop-minded sound.
In between the German and U.S. release of Immolate, Charles Cooper passed away unexpectedly. Following Cooper’s death the Telefon Tel Aviv project went on hold. In 2014, Eustis released a solo album on Audraglint Recordings as Sons of Magdalene called Move To Pain. After years of self-doubt, Eustis decided to revive the Telefon Tel Aviv alias in 2016. This return coincides with a reissue of the debut album on Ghostly International and Eustis’ first live shows under the name, which began in the spring of 2016 with a North American tour alongside Moderat. New material under the Telefon Tel Aviv moniker is currently being written.

Bangles fans should def consider this cool collection, but don't think that Disc 1 of the Big Star box would work (for me) as a stand-alone LP. Haven't listened to the very-early-to-early Beach Boys set yet. Prob won't seek out the Jaco, but looks like a valiantly, somewhat intriguingly wide-ranging effort; I didn't know he recorded with Ian Hunter....

In September 1961, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, and Dennis Wilson stepped up to a microphone together for the first time at the home of Hite and Dorinda Morgan to demo The Beach Boys’ first three songs, under the Morgans’ direction. Between that date and the following March, before signing a seven-year contract with Capitol Records in July 1962, the group committed nine songs to tape. Some of these tunes became iconic, others remained obscure. Omnivore recently released a two-CD set of this material, including various takes. Uncut noted, “This pastiche of past and present contains the seeds of a predominant strain of ’60s music.” NPR’s Fresh Air spotlighted the package. And now, available for the first time on vinyl will be Highlights From Becoming the Beach Boys: The Complete Hite & Dorinda Morgan Sessions, a distillation of the initial package. The set comes in blue, red, or yellow vinyl variations.

Ladies and Gentlemen … The Bangles!, featuring 16 tracks hand-selected by the band members from their personal music archives, is a collection of remastered ’80s-era rarities, demos, live recordings and more, including the band’s debut single and all of the tracks from their self-titled 1982 EP helmed by legendary Ramones/Blondie producer Craig Leon. The album was previously available as a download and a CD issued earlier this year by Omnivore Recordings. PopMatters said: “This compilation serves as a good introductory tool for new fans, those interested in exploring the group’s work, as well as die-hards interested in rarities and outtakes.” Due to popular demand, Omnivore is releasing the set again, this time on beautiful red vinyl for Record Store Day/Black Friday.

Got my copies of the Tad reissues in today's mail. They come in really nice mini-LP gatefold sleeves (slightly larger than a digipak); each one has a big foldout poster with the album art on one side, and interviews with all the bandmembers about the record in question, plus complete lyrics, on the other side. The sound quality is fantastic - these were always well-recorded albums, built for maximum impact, and the remastering doesn't brickwall them or push the sound past the pain threshold, it's just louder, clearer, and heavier. Really, I don't see how they could have done a better job on these.

that Monite song on that Screamers, Bangers, & Cosmic Synths comp is a god damned JAM. infuriating that it's already sold out; the only copy available anywhere is going for $100 on Discogs.

It’s taken us a couple of years to untangle all of the bureaucratic red tape but it’s finally here; a re-mastered Trinity Session on vinyl and SACD. Peter Moore went back to the original session tapes (it was recorded on an extremely primitive early digital format) and did his voodoo thang, cleaning, eqing and re-clocking and giving a whole new life to that magical day. The highly respected audio-file label Analogue Productions then got involved and the result is a pristine, 2 disc release on 200 gm vinyl with a gatefold sleeve and liner notes by Jason Schneider. It’s an expensive item, but it’s a quality item…and it makes a great Christmas/Holiday present….especially if you are buying for yourself.

The Super Audio CD (which is also compatible with a regular CD player) won’t be available for another month or so and we are hoping to also get approval for an HD download. We will let you know when they are available.

This re-issue is my most fave live jazz album since Wes Montgomery's Full House.
"In early 1966 three terrific acts appeared at the famed Village Vanguard jazz club in New York. Two of them were up-to-the-minute small groups led by Miles Davis and John Coltrane respectively. Those are the ones history remembers. The one that tends to be forgotten was the debut of a big band formed by ex Basie-band trumpeter and conductor Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis.."

Yeah, that's a great set (and I'm not a big-band guy at all, generally speaking).

It doesn't often sound like a big band, much of it sounds like an on fire quintet or trio.

Got a Herbie Hancock budget set in today's mail that combines 1974's Thrust, 1975's Man-Child, and 1976's Secrets on two CDs, but the really cool thing about it is that it includes all the singles from those albums as bonus tracks. Some of them just start like the album versions, then fade out, but others are more complex single edits which are pretty cool, and they've never been reissued before. (It sounds like they were remastered from the cleanest vinyl they could find, but again, you're not gonna find 'em anywhere else, period, so.)

As mentioned toward the end, all of this is in the 2001 LiliPUT box, but here's new vinylist refreshment anyway:

The Ballad of Kleenex/Liliput

The fact that punk rock could capture the imaginations of young people around Europe and America in the late '70's was embodied in the five-year output of Switzerland's Kleenex (later renamed Liliput). The music meant empowerment for many people to take chances and not worry about consequences. This was especially so for women like guitarist Marlene Marder and bassist Klaudia Schiff, the two constants/mainstays of the group

When punk groups began springing up in Zurich, it was a very small scene with a handful of bands that all knew each other, not many places to play and virtually no support from radio stations or the press there. Marder (originally a saxophonist) had played with a group called the Nasal Boys. Two experimental film-makers, Schiff and drummer Lislot Ha had been bouncing around the idea of forming group before hooking up with the appropriately-named vocalist Regula Sing and a male guitarist who had much more ambitious musician plans. Marder liked what she heard from the band and was glad to step in to replace him. Indeed, the group's aim was to have fun, more than to become rich and famous. Armed with a repertoire of four-songs and three chords, Kleenexwowed the local crowds with their simple, child-like rock ditties, filled with joyful chants and nonsense words in the tradition of Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" but musically more in the noisy, exuberant spirit of their British comrades the Sex Pistols.

Kleenex had local friends who decided to start up a label (Sunrise) where the band put out their first (self-financed) EP in 1978, which included the same four songs from their live sets ("Beri-Beri," "Ain't You," "Hedi's Head," "Nice"). The response was such that the first pressing sold out in weeks. A copy of the EP managed to get to John Peel, the famous English DJ, who fell in love with it and played it over and over for his radio listeners. Rough Trade got wind of their strange, wonderful music and signed the group to a record contract. Their first single ("Ain't You" and "Hedi's Head" from the EP) made a splash with the UK press and led the label to organize a group of dates around Europe with label-mates Scritti Politti and Red Krayola. Not even a year after their formation, the group was already an international sensation even though, at the time, they still held various clerical jobs back in Zurich.

Coming to England, they were unimaginatively dubbed the 'Swiss Slits' by the press and made their next single ("You"/"U", 1979) with Krayola leader/Rough Trade producer Mayo Thompson. Soon, they were off headlining an English 'package tourí with local favorites like the Raincoats, Swell Maps, Subway Sect and Spizz Energi.

After the tour ended in late '79, Sing left the group to be replaced by Chrigle Freund, a recent high school dropout, much younger than the rest of the group. With the loss of their original singer and threats to destroy all their records by the tissue company, which they took their name from, the group rechristened itself as Liliput in 1980, soon adding saxist Angie Barrack to their ranks. This five-piece line up recorded their next single 'Die Matrosen/Split' with its famous nonsense cheers/shouts ('Hotch-potch, Hugger-mugger, Bow-wow, Hara-kiri!'), making a splash on the UK indie/alternative charts.

Despite their success, Ha and Barrack left the group, reducing them to a trio. Their next single, 1981's politically-motivated 'Eisiger Wind' (with its Hugo Ball parody sleeve) caught the attention of noted American rock critics Robert Christgau and Greil Marcus, who praised the innovative trio. By the time the single was released, the band was in the middle of another personnel crisis with Freund now leaving the group. Marder and Schiff closed ranks and assembled a new band with singer Astrid Spirit, drummer Beat Schlatter and saxist Christoph Herzog. After a successful German tour, the later two left the band (though Schlatter continued to help on drums) and the group was a trio again.

After four years, the group finally released a full-length album ('Liliput') for Rough Trade in 1982, leading into another tour. After another single ('The Jatz'/'You Did It', 1983), Marder and Schiff were tired, not having fun anymore and ready to quit. Spirit rallied them to do another record with an advance from Rough Trade Germany. Their second album (Some Songs, which Marder thinks is some of their best work), with various guests helping out and Spirit now playing violin, turned out to be their swan song. Spirit decided that she wanted to raise a family instead of being in a band, spelling the end of the group in late '83. Marder had her own record shop, worked at a jazz club and had a band in the late '80's called Danger Mice. Schiff returned to painting, which she had done for many flyers and sleeves for the band.

A 13-disc boxed set which will see all of Vangelis’ classic works recorded for the Vertigo and Polydor labels gathered together and remastered in a lavish box with essay and many photographs. The discs are housed in two die-cut, gatefold disc holders within a rigid 242mm square slipcase and alongside a substantial (probably 64-page) book, much like the recent Steve Hackett ‘Premonitions’ set. The Magnetic Fields’ first two albums, The Wayward Bus and Distant Plastic Trees, will make their debut appearance on vinyl in December 2016, packaged together as a two-LP set.

Distant Plastic Trees, the Magnetic Fields’ first album, was originally released in England and Japan in 1991. Merritt’s accordion player, the novelist Daniel Handler, later noted that “this tinny and intimate recording, in quiet defiance of the reigning roar of pop music, recalls both the early, scratchy field recordings of folk music and the first experiments in electronic music—precisely the sort of stylistic balance the Magnetic Fields liked to achieve.” The album includes the early-’90s college radio single “100,000 Fireflies” which had earlier appeared as a single on Harriet Records and was later covered by Superchunk.

The album artwork on both Distant Plastic Trees and The Wayward Bus was created by watercolorist Wendy Smith. Her beautiful wrap-around paintings, now printed in a larger format, along with remastered audio make this two-LP set an exciting addition to the Magnetic Fields discography.
