Alba, is it that you don't know that track, don't think very highly of it, or what?

I know along with Digable Planets, Black Sheep and De La Soul, Tribe's "Scenario" was fairly responsible for my first "love" with 90s hiphop.
i would guess i'm not alone there, but who knows?

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

(To clarify, I've heard OF some of those songs, even if I haven't actually heard them. But I'm American and my 1990s went like this: top 40 (1990-93), alt-rock (93-96), indie-rock (96-99). So blind spots ahoy.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:42 (nineteen years ago) link

anthony, I think people are more wary of conformity and hopeful that ILM will show up w/ a top 100 list that shows diversity of taste. I certainly don't want it to reflect my list (although I made mine in a hurry the night it was due and regret a lot of my choices...how did I forget "Come on Ride the train"?!?!) but I DO want it to show a more interesting take on the music of the 90s than say, Spin magazine + a bunch of anglophiles.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:42 (nineteen years ago) link

as i could have expected, this list has too many british people on it

too bad because we're Spin magazine and a bunch of anglophiles

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I was pretty sure that both Dubstar "Stars" and Portishead "All Mine" were going to make it. Now I realize it's not gonna happen. Why is "All Mine" not that popular?

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think "Scenario" is well-known ... but I certainly expect "Low End Theory" to make the albums list.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Rentboy - I'm very ignorant of 90s hiphop, but know of most of the other tracks mentioned as probably still to come. Not that one, though, so in my usefully clueless position, I was suggesting that there's no way it will make it.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

(Miccio, "alienated" is a strong word, obv. It's more that it just makes me feel out of the loop -- and in a way that the 2000s polls didn't. But that's to be expected, because as my previous post suggests, my tastes this decade are a lot more catholic than they ever were in the 90s. Actually, in a way, it's kind of exciting, because now I look forward to hearing these songs I don't know!)

i thought people would be patting themselves on the back rather than complaining that they have more diverse tastes than the norm. Personally I'm happy as long as the list isn't filled with crap, whether or not it matches my own. And these songs have been consistently good.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

People are complaining that there's not ENOUGH diversity.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:46 (nineteen years ago) link

fuck this, I'm just going to get 29-21 out of the way.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I think that "Music Sounds Better With You" is like a 99/100 lock. I can't think of a more ILM friendly song than that one.

Good point about "No Diggity," Scott--that's definitely possible, though like Cali Love, I'm not certain it's a lock. "Got Your Money," like "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," has virtually no chance.

I didn't say (or mean to imply) that D.I. will get the CIF vote--just Neutral Milk Hotel. But they'll get it in spades.

"Black Steel" and "Laid" are very outside possibilities. "Laid" has virtually no chance, "Black Steel" I suppose could happen but is very unlikely.

"Lovefool" could actually be another sleeper.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah. DJD, that's why I said I'm surprised you don't just pat yourself on the back. I was way more alienated by the 00s list, because Radiohead isn't god.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Why is "All Mine" not that popular?
Because popularity-wise, "Dummy" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Portishead"
(saying nothing about the relative quality of the two albums)

The corny indie fuc contingent have probably never even heard "Portishead".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

All Mine is just not very good. Neither is the album actually.

danh (danh), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not an anglophile - I'm just British. I can't help it. ILM was started as a discussion board for a UK based website, so it's not surprising that even now there's a terrible imbalance in favour of us.

Is it that it's too British, or just not American enough?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Why does the 90s list seem more BRITISH, though?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

(xpost actually!)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll say that so far this is a very cool list. And it might be the first list I've ever voted for where the majority of my top ten doesn't even make the list, I'm actually sort of excited about that. My tastes are usually so canonical.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

cuz Britain's been putting out shit in the 00s.

btw, Gear, you rock for doing this. You had a lot more shit to tally than I did for the OMG poll so I know this was a LOT of work. Good job!

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Portishead's self-titled album is fucking great.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

"All Mine" is a great song but nowhere near as great as "Sour Times," I think.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Than the 00-04 one, jay? I've no idea. I hadn't noticed that it did. Maybe all the American stuff is still to come (except 'Common People', obv). Radiohead are honorary Americans.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:49 (nineteen years ago) link

i also think that all mine is the superior portishead track, but even so, it only ranked 24 on my list.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

o come on miccio if you were at a party and this was the playlist so far you know that party would be sucking. titties don't pop out to no belle and sebastian. whereas at a freaknasty party...

jaymc - cuz the brits all pretty much agree on what was british and good, yanks have amerindie vs. hip-hop vs. anglophile (those traitors!) divides.

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Bill, Got Your Money is produced by the Neptunes! It's danceable! It has a MUCH better chance than the other Wu cuts.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:51 (nineteen years ago) link

11 of my projected top 29 are American.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Why I oughta put you over my knee.

Radiohead are honorary Americans.

fuck you, take that back.

o come on miccio if you were at a party and this was the playlist so far you know that party would be sucking

yeah but ladies like the B&S at the crib. and it wasn't the WYLDEST JAMZ of the 90s.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't even know if I've heard "Got Your Money" all the way through. It has like 1/10 the reputation of "C.R.E.A.M."

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I think that "Music Sounds Better With You" is like a 99/100 lock. I can't think of a more ILM friendly song than that one.
Yep, and I'm anticipating the Daft Punk luv to sweep "Da Funk" into the top 30 along with it.

I'm holding out hope for "Laid" ... it's an extremely well-known song, even if it does scream "STUDENT PUB NIGHT" for most of us I think it's still a vote-getter.

(I nominated it, too :) )

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:52 (nineteen years ago) link

ladies what love b&s give lousy head. whereas at a freaknasty party...

belle & sebastian really ARE boring

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:53 (nineteen years ago) link

The titties have popped, Blount.

and I think people are ignoring how diverse this list has been. Poppin' a hernia everytime an indie track comes along and looking the other way when Biggie flies by.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:53 (nineteen years ago) link

"All Mine" is a great song but nowhere near as great as "Sour Times", I think.

I agree, but to me "Sour Times" should have been #1 or #2 and "All Mine" should have at least made the top 100.

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:53 (nineteen years ago) link

one of the last times I DJed at "indie night," "Got Yo Money" got the most enthusiastic reaction. Except from the guy who runs it (damn it).

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

i can't believe you're siding with scarfpop over crunk.

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

hahahaha I suck.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Sometimes you've just got to say fuck your freaknasty parties.

Why do people insist on pretending they only have one criterion for what makes good music, or even a good party?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Scarfpop haha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:56 (nineteen years ago) link

What do you think the chances of there being two more Ol' Dirty Bastard tracks to come are?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:56 (nineteen years ago) link

two? none

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:56 (nineteen years ago) link

(mega xpost) Actually, to answer my own question about this poll being more British: it's probably not, it just seems that way to us. These days, everyone's more or less acquainted with both British and American acts equally, because a) more ways to hear about and access music in the 21st century, and b) most of us are probably less insular in terms of what we seek out than we were 10 years ago.

(For a lot of us, the 1990s represented our teenage years. To be a British teenager in the 1990s, I gather, meant having an opinion about Pulp. To be an American teenager in the 1990s meant it just never came up, and while we may have later sought out 90s British acts, we have nothing to be nostalgic for.)

I'm holding out hope for "Laid" ... it's an extremely well-known song, even if it does scream "STUDENT PUB NIGHT" for most of us I think it's still a vote-getter.

Yeah I guess it's possible but I think James' reputation hasn't exactly held up. No one talks about them anymore except in a nostalgic or "what were we thinking?" context. Great song, though--should've been top 100, though I'd say top 30 is a bit strong.
