no problem! where in china are you? I may be Harbin in the next couple months, youku is the way to go for listening to things eh?

I will definitely be voting couple of these high as well, Sooraj Dooba Hain might be my favourite song this year.

Down south in Guangzhou (really strong central/south Asian (+ African) presence here in districts like Xiaobei, which is cool). Yep, Youku's the way to go, really good for watching latest Bollywood films + songs in variable quality but p.quickly uploaded!

Been trawling through some EOY lists like http://www.rediff.com/movies/report/raja-sens-best-hindi-songs-of-2015/20151223.htm (though that keeps it pretty classy)

Not sure if these Youku links will work for people outside the PRC, but ...

SONG: Banno
SINGER NAME: Brijesh Shandllya, Swati Sharma
MUSIC: Tanishk Bagchi and Vayu
LYRICS: Vayu

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTI3MTQ1Mzk1Mg==.html

SONG: Zindagi Aa Raha Hoon Main
SINGER NAME: Atif Aslam
MUSIC: Amaal Mallik
LYRICS: Manoj Muntashir

Possibly the cheesiest thing I've ever seen/heard, amazing doubling-down on Avicii-style country-EDM visually matched by Tiger Shroff's Poochie-esque dance/football/etc moves.

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XODY4NjgwMDIw.html

SONG: Tu Chale
SINGER NAME: Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal
MUSIC: A.R. Rahman
LYRICS: Irshad Kamil

Late 2014, but I like the way the song's impulses to both soar and skitter ignore each other, like some photo-negative of classic Timbaland tactics.

SONG: Shakira
SINGER NAME: Shalmali Kholgade
MUSIC: Jeet Gannguli
LYRICS: Kausar Munir

Lauren Gottlieb item song from a Dumb & Dumber-style movie ... good party times, vaguely curious if Shakira herself has heard it, eh.

I'm going to a bollywood-themed party this friday, we're I've promised to play bollywood tracks. So far I've copied everything I could find from here onto a spotify-playlist along with a couple of other things. I know it's a cheesy question, but any classics that I NEED to have? Got Jai Ho, Jimmy, Mundian to Bach Ke (I know, I know...) and Chaiyya Chaiyya.

a few hits, from my limited knowledge of this stuff (more modern 90s and onward, I don't listen to a tonne of the older stuff). Mostly ballads it seems, but a couple are dancier, not sure what kind of vibe you might want, but I love all of these songs.

Song Name - Kal Ho Naa Ho

Lyrics - Javed Akhtar

Thanks! I think what I need to finish it is something like the biggest A R Rahman hits, something like that. But really, the list is 3 hours long at this point, I've put way too much alike stuff on it, need to trim it down.

Discovered this cool slice of Bollywood crunk:

Listening to the Dilwale soundtrack, composed by Pritam, and apparently a big hit, as far as my limited google skills can tell. Pritam writes my favorite Bollywood ballads, but they're too bombastic on this one, I think. This is kinda cool, though:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kclXuc_J50Y

I sorta like Bollywood hiphop. They know they have no chance in hell of accurately hitting one sound, so they throw everything and the kitchen sink in it. Catchy brass sample as well.

Frederik B, Saturday, 23 January 2016 23:34 (eight years ago) link

Also, I love how Europe looks in Bollywood films. Nobody never ever ever goes around swinging EU-flags around.

Frederik B, Sunday, 24 January 2016 00:00 (eight years ago) link

Manma Emotion Jaage is cool. I agree about the kitchen sink approach, I like the manic-ness of it all, I like to imagine being in the studio with them and them all just being jacked up and saying 'add this....and this....AND THIS' just outta pure joy.

been listening to these few from the end of 2015/early 2016...

this ones kinda corny sounding, but I like it, sounds like a subdued version of 'stuck like glue' to me, about as country a Bollywood tunes I have found (would be into any country sounding Bollywood tunes people have as an aside)

Song - ATRANGI YAARI
Singer - AMITABH BACHCHAN,FARHAN AKHTAR
Music Director - ROCHAK KOHLI
Lyrics - DEEPAK RAMOLA,GURPREET SAINI
Mixed and Mastered by: RAVI SINGHAL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffd7QlyOlOM

I anyone likes Susanne Sundfor (which I have learned is most folks on this board) this is about as Sundfor as you can find in Bollywood. Features Arijit Singh from Sooraj Dooba Hain.

SONG : SANAM RE
ARTIST : MITHOON FEATURING ARIJIT SINGH
ADDITIONAL VOCALS : ANIRUDH BHOLA
MUSIC COMPOSED, ARRANGED AND PRODUCED BY MITHOON
LYRICS : MITHOON
MIXED AND MASTERED BY ERIC PILLAI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiG5jPmyDFI

Feel like I should like this one more than I actually do, should be right up my alley, but never quite gets fully going.

SONG- AAJ MOOD ISHQHOLIC HAI
MUSIC - MEET BROS
SINGERS - MEET BROS FEAT. SONAKSHI SINHA
LYRICS -KUMAAR
PROGRAMMED BY- BUNTY RAJPUT, ABHIJIT VAGHANI

also - etc, thanks for posting the link to Jonathan Bogart's blog upthread, ended up voting for that Lula track from his Thai countdown in the ILM EOY poll, beautiful song.

qft. Also, wow at country-bollywood...

Btw, it's really really weird, but Superman, which I posted upthread, is in the No Home Movie, the final film by Chantal Akerman. Did NOT see that coming...

two weeks pass...

was catching up on a bit of bollywood music over the weekend, liked these...

Thodi Beer Pila - Aditya Salankar ft. DJ Suketu | Muskaan Seth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CVfh5nrwqE&ebc=ANyPxKqpgR8b0Q79VjBA_XdkPpCiYwvmXVzUOCyHK5sBQTp35h-7kB7nz1QW-_yzL-m8V4LikvVeninN6HHwRZTUvfHga60GCA

I think it's pretty much a given that I will like it when it comes to the trancier stuff from india, seems to me that as much as I love the ballads, this is probably the music that could actually crossover internationally.

Toote Tare | Direct Ishq | Rajniesh Duggal, Arjun Bijlani & Nidhi Subbaiah

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cy9LOMKQdk

speaking of ballads this one RULES

any other cool new shit out that I've missed?

CANT BELIEVE THIS THREAD TITLE STILL EXISTS UNCHANGED

StillAdvance, Friday, 5 August 2016 10:38 (seven years ago) link

I guess someone needs to ask a mod to drop "Central" from the title

So I saw Asha Bhosle on what was billed as her farewell tour of North America a little while back. She still sounds pretty good.

curmudgeon, Friday, 5 August 2016 17:17 (seven years ago) link

Just dropped the 'Central' bit, let me know if you want other changes.

mod, Friday, 5 August 2016 19:41 (seven years ago) link

That's good, I think. Thanks

curmudgeon, Sunday, 7 August 2016 15:37 (seven years ago) link

thanks for the change!

anyway, curmudgeon, where did you see Asha? would love to have been able to catch her, i was trying to listen to Dil Padosi Hai the other day, but it just click for me like her film songs.

kruezer2, Monday, 8 August 2016 03:21 (seven years ago) link

I saw her at Wolf Trap Farm Park, in a Virginia suburb of Washington DC. There's a large Indian population here, and the crowd was nearly all Indian/South Asian. A 10,000 seat location (4,000 seats in roof covered but open-air on the side pavilion and 6,000 lawn seats). She had cool backdrop visuals alternating between Bollywood looking clips and psychedelic imagery). She had her granddaughter dance and sing for a song or 2 as well. Granddaughter was good but not great.

Haven't kept up with this as much as I wanted at all, but this is a pretty cool synth-pop song, really shows how easy the hindi elements combine with western pop.

great song! i do think a song like that would cross over well in the west with a bit of english in the chorus.

i am sucker for bollywood love songs this year, been listening to Love You Zindagi from Dear Zindagi a lot lately. Ironically i also like Pritam's The Breakup Song too which has to be the most joyous song ever written with Breakup in the title.

Also does anyone know if there is a specific release schedule for their movie?, I assume there must be certain times they aim to release movies, maybe they aim for the holidays? I feel like Bollywood this fall has been way better than the rest of the year.
