when she played it at the listening party in january i was like "this song doesn't make any sense to me" and tbh i still sorta feel that way and it's awesome

The whole stretch from Swim Free -> Castles is flawless.

She would do a killer cover of Madonna's "Swim."

I think of Dawn as more of a "Power of Goodbye" kinda chick.

Swim Free >>> Adderall/Sold but damn, this album. I could easily vote for half a dozen songs. Projection, Warriors, Phoenix, Choices...
ARGH.

What kind of monster sets a FOUR DAY timespan on a poll this difficult? Ugh.

Feel like, if Dawn records have one big flaw, it's usually pacing, and I really wish she'd done something to vary the early run of maximalist mid-paced stodge at the start. From Blow through to the moment when Adderall/Slow explodes into life feels is a bit of a slog for me. Blow feels like it's at least a third too slow, especially coming after Calypso.
It's near faultless after that, obviously.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 December 2015 09:44 (eight years ago) link
"blow" through to "adderall/sold" is the most exciting stretch of the record for me, there's so much going on and so many switch-ups
― cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 December 2015 10:07 (eight years ago) link
"adderall/sold" really crystallises all of that in one song - that's the stretch where you feel right at the top of your head, before she lets you exhale in the second half
That kinda makes sense seeing as you love Goldenheart and I really don't.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 December 2015 10:13 (eight years ago) link
Maybe I just don't like her lower register very much, especially when effects-laden.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 December 2015 10:14 (eight years ago) link
Adderall / Sold - well, specifically Sold is p much the only track on this album that has never gelled with me. Love the beginning, but then when it goes all jackhammer it just utterly destroys the tension and promise it delivered in the first half.

This is mental imo; Armor On might be one of the most well paced albums* Ive ever heard
(Yeah I kniw its an EP but theres enough material on there to justify an album fir many other artists)

Armor On is the exception, yeah, she got it bang on there.

my favorite parts of this album are the minimalist ballads and also the parts that sound like drexciya
― boring alt-reality reverend (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 09:18 (eight years ago) link
I meant Castles not Titans duh. Both that and Warriors do a p great job of summing up everything shes ever done right (and also make Phoenix seem VERY extraneous)

Yeah, I shouldve voted for "Castles". That song is super-dope
