didn't know there was any issue with the Little Nemo book! (and it only came out last year) (mine was the Michael Zulli one which turns out to only be four years ago, not five)

I was gonna guess James Owen, it sounds like something he would do (though sic has too fine taste to fund a James Owen comic)

i saw the zulli was out on the fanta blog but didn't even know it had started as a crowdfund piece!

all facetiousness aside, approaching crowdfunding as a consumer sport is a bad idea; the only reason to go that way is if you want to unconditionally support the artist. to that extent, i'm happy getting whatever de la makes whenever they make it but (from the buyer's end) there's something to be said to having to obey the constraints of a demanding market. It's not like losing the fetters improved, say, prince's output

more like two new songs, a skit and an experiment

Spottie, Monday, 2 May 2016 19:50 (eight years ago) link

Yeah these new songs suck. Really hoping they aren't at all indicative of the album.

Evan R, Monday, 2 May 2016 20:14 (eight years ago) link

I just found these...

Yeah these new songs suck.

...and was coming here to say the exact opposite.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 8 May 2016 23:54 (seven years ago) link

the features for the album include Jill Scott, Snoop Dogg, Roc Marciano, Estelle, Pete Rock, David Byrne, Usher, 2 Chainz... also Little Dragon and Damon Albarn but I suppose that was already presumed

ulysses, Friday, 20 May 2016 16:11 (seven years ago) link

oddly, it's "PAIN feat. Snoop Dogg" and "SNOOPIES feat. David Byrne"
did they maybe both show up on the wrong day?

ulysses, Friday, 20 May 2016 16:12 (seven years ago) link

The title "For Your Pain & Suffering" seems pretty sarcastic after listening to the music, though I mostly enjoyed it. Wasn't their new album supposed to be called "You're Welcome" at one point?

geoffreyess, Friday, 20 May 2016 16:45 (seven years ago) link

oh snap this new one w snoop is awesome and v encouraging

i wanna know who produced this, dave? sounds really good.

Spottie, Tuesday, 31 May 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link

Song sounds fine, but I hope the album is more challenging than this. I get that they're older now but it's like they've lost all interest in confrontation and provocation

All these songs sound pretty sweet, lots of detail in the production.

Spottie, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 22:11 (seven years ago) link

I see y'all are having the same problem translating yourselves in a hostile medium as De La has.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 August 2016 22:12 (seven years ago) link

Usher. Lots of detail here in both the production and the verses but I do hope this album remembers to be fun.

yeah thats good.

Spottie, Thursday, 18 August 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

I'm really looking forward to this album, which means I'm highly likely to be disappointed. Really into everything I've heard so far.

michaellambert, Thursday, 18 August 2016 20:39 (seven years ago) link

oh man that song is wonderful!

Best Usher vocal since 2014 too.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 18 August 2016 20:55 (seven years ago) link

Digging this. Super low key tho.

Spottie, Friday, 26 August 2016 18:06 (seven years ago) link

This album is such a wet blanket

Evan R, Friday, 26 August 2016 20:32 (seven years ago) link

I'm liking it a lot, even the 2 Chainz bit, but not David Byrne's awful appearance.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 26 August 2016 20:47 (seven years ago) link

maybe save it for wintertime xp

The De La Soul is Not Dead: documentray trailer was uploaded to youtube, yesterday.

PappaWheelie V, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 13:47 (seven years ago) link

oh damn it's released already?

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 13:50 (seven years ago) link

xxp yeah I listened to it again with different expectations and didn't hate it as much. I'm still interested in catching up Pos & Dave after all these and hearing what they have to say, but these accompaniments are so low energy, and the guests are so shoehorned in, and the whole thing feels like it's pandering to toothless AAA stations that consider 70 soul revival acts hip and edgy. It's just such an old man record I can't quite get over it.

Evan R, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 14:10 (seven years ago) link

it's so old man i really tried to get into it . like even the metaphors in the raps are some super outdated references it's embarrassing .

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 30 August 2016 14:41 (seven years ago) link

this sucked imo

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 30 August 2016 17:56 (seven years ago) link

My enthusiasm's waning. I like the sound, but I wanted the songs to be as alive as that sleeve. The Justin Hawkins track is awful, the most turgid thing they've ever recorded, the Byrne song is almost as terrible, and the Estelle and Little Dragon appearances are eh. I still love "Greyhounds," "Royals," Here in After," and "Pain."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 30 August 2016 18:01 (seven years ago) link

yeah those are the best tracks for sure.

Watched this doc thursday night. Prince Paul's revealing interview about his departure and thoughts on Stakes is High was the highlight for me

PappaWheelie V, Saturday, 10 September 2016 12:58 (seven years ago) link

interesting to me that they didn't acknowledge the AOI albums or Grind Date in the doc at all
need to give the new album more than two listens

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Sunday, 11 September 2016 15:52 (seven years ago) link

I'm also baffled why the doc stops at Stakes and skips to the new album -- and no mention of Pos's spinal meningitis in 1994, which seems as integral to group's story as Ralf Hutter's cycling accident to Kraftwerk's

PappaWheelie V, Monday, 12 September 2016 13:56 (seven years ago) link

The beginning of this album is something of a slog but by the time I hit around track 4-5 I'm in heaven

Don't boo, vote (DJP), Monday, 12 September 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link

their Judgment Night song w/Teenage Fanclub "Fallin" really holds up a lot better than everything else on that album, amazingly somehow they actually hit on something that reflected the strengths of both groups
