i have a feeling his next project will be better...he made his big major label album, now i want beach house 3...something in between this & airplane mode (which was recorded in a weekend) is my ideal Ty i think

LA turned out a lot better than the leaked version

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 20 November 2015 17:35 (eight years ago) link

i think this is pretty much the ideal major label ty record but i wouldn't be surprised if he did a future-style thing and tried to go back to his roots to reboot his career a bit

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 November 2015 19:19 (eight years ago) link

yeah i don't necessarily think this album could have been better. just that now that its out, he'll be a little more free to be like, 'fuck it' and not chase the Current Sound

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 20 November 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link

This album has so many (conflicting but) working definitions of "smooth".

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 08:18 (eight years ago) link

it's the middle stretch of this album that really sags imo. obv never listening to "la" again but "saved" through to "horses in the stable" is pretty impeccable, then the trey and sevyn collabs are good-not-great, but then "miracle/wherever" and "guard down" completely halt the momentum...they sound so scratchily recorded and aimless and go on forever. then it only really regains its stride with the banger singles shoved at the end

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 13:19 (eight years ago) link

feel like "credit" could have leaned a lot more on its humorous premise...ty doesn't do half of what prime kellz would have done with the potentially ludicrous hook and the guest spot the song needs is sevyn running with the humour not being bland and mushy

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 13:20 (eight years ago) link

def see how "blasé"/"only right"/"bring it out of me" feel tacked on but they're also better songs than much of the album

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 13:24 (eight years ago) link

what's wrong with la?

flopson, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 14:19 (eight years ago) link

"Miracle"/""wherever" is an album highlight IMO

I don't think blase feels tacked on its just kinda there

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 15:02 (eight years ago) link

> "What's wrong with la

traffic, mostly.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 15:03 (eight years ago) link

i like that sevyn part especially 'you want a cookie but that's how it should be'

tpp, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 16:56 (eight years ago) link

Miracle/Wherever is too long but it features some of Ty's best singing.

The arrangements throughout are gorgeous, but my favorite moment is Credit's piano/sax coda

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 18:12 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

here's where i admit rtc was right & i think this album is kind of disappointing on the whole

individual moments shine for me (esp "solid") but i think its mainly that the erm sexiness of beach house—the louche lothario has been replaced not so much by a scumbag but by someone going thru the motions in a way that gets no enjoyment from it

idk. im optimistic about beach house 3

i also think his EP with Wiz Khalifa this year was #actually pretty tight, even if it makes you feel like you're taking wiz khalifa's side in some domestic drama

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:09 (eight years ago) link

wrong this album is a classic

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:10 (eight years ago) link

i don't really want him to be sexy. his misogyny sorta has that z-ro style 'ho just leave me alone playing xbox by my lonesome' almost cozy vibe. also the album has, like, musical humor that complements lyrical humour in a great way; the background vocs on "Know Ya" (strookiiin')

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:15 (eight years ago) link

i thought what jordan wrote about credit applies to most of the album actually, the songwriting stands alone. like "Straight up" is a how had no one phrased that verse melody before

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:18 (eight years ago) link

an album doesnt really need every style and every guest kinda a weird approach some imo, def jams on there tho, at least one major turd too

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:44 (eight years ago) link

the Kanye moment is a turd but such a quality lol that i listen to it every time

this album is almost entirely stylistically coherent, like remove track 2 and then everything up to blasé has ml the same vibe, at which pt it's refreshing to switch gears

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:10 (eight years ago) link

literally an insane statement

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:15 (eight years ago) link

i really don't think of this as an album that jumps around a lot stylistically, the classic soul samples tie it all together. even the metro boomin production sounds like temptations

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:21 (eight years ago) link

you think LA , straight up, horses, know ya, credit, miracle/whenever, sittin pretty have v different styles?

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:24 (eight years ago) link

need to go back to beach house but i do feel i have overplayed his joyless ogling somewhat, still not real sexi but occasionally capable of a kind of ironized pat-on-the-ass affectionate warmth

also lol i love 'saved', wild out to that shit every time

think d-40 has a deeper investment and sees an extra upper echelon to him than others perhaps, not criticising cos in some ways understandable but mainly cos of that i was more about addressing the expectation/disappointment matrix for an album that otherwise is p above average okay imo

r|t|c, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:26 (eight years ago) link

never a classic though, flops be trippin

r|t|c, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:26 (eight years ago) link

lol @ pay on the ass warmth

i don't remember beach house very vividly, should revis

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:27 (eight years ago) link

coombes gang (some dude), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:31 (eight years ago) link

ive prob over listened to this tbh, like when u can sing along to most of 'bring it out of me' :-/

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:32 (eight years ago) link

lolll yeah that is doing way too much

still jel of that interaction compared with armchair pontificating tho tbf

r|t|c, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:45 (eight years ago) link

also lol i love 'saved', wild out to that shit every time

i loved "saved" so much

still haven't really spent time with this record, looking at the tracklisting exhausts me

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:47 (eight years ago) link

lost my headphones so ive been listened to music on my shitty laptop speakers for months. BUT the other day i put together my old hifi and first thing i played on it was 'horses in the stable'. shit sounded so good it was a quasi-religious experience. ty$ has a great attention to detail when it comes to sound design.

tpp, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:50 (eight years ago) link

yeah his nerd side really comes out on this record, it's biggest strength imo

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:51 (eight years ago) link

to be clear yeah i don't think this is a bad album by any stretch, just disappointing w/r/t what i hoped for

individual moments shine when taken out of context but it bugs me that when 'blase' comes on that i kind of check in, because i never even liked that song much in the first place

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:00 (eight years ago) link

see that's where i check out

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:03 (eight years ago) link

i listen to it front to back but the floplist for those unwilling to wade thru 19 songs or whatever it is would be like

la
straight up
solid
horses
know ya
credit
miracle
sittin pretty
finale

bonus tracks:
saved
blasé

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 07:45 (eight years ago) link

"saved" is a hit actually

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 March 2016 14:38 (eight years ago) link

Hey billstevejim. It's Preciooooouuuus.

Toof Seteltha (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 14:54 (eight years ago) link

by skits you mean the clips of him talking to his brother in prison?

flopson, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 16:01 (eight years ago) link

I guess most of them are him talking to TC now that I'm listening closer. The TV announcer one is kinda annoying. I've listened to that transition between "Straight Up" and "Solid" enough times that I have it basically memorized.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 16:10 (eight years ago) link

"Straight Up" should be a hit IMO.

http://www.thefader.com/2016/08/26/ty-dolla-sign-the-concept-of-a-mixtape-has-changed

You’re on “Work From Home,” a huge song. In your mind, do you compartmentalize the crossover pop stuff you do — like “Drop That Kitty” with Charli XCX — and consider it a different part of your career than your solo stuff?

It’s just all dope music for me. With the Charli record, the producers played it for me, and I loved it, and I got Tinashe on it. My daughter loves Tinashe, so that was for her, right? The Fifth Harmony record, my daughter loves Fifth Harmony. I wouldn't have known about 'em, if it weren't for her. When she get's in the car, I'm like, "Play whatever you want to play." But this guy Chris Anokute, he was around Def Jam when I did “Toot It and Boot It” with YG, now he’s on Sony with L.A. Reid and them. Chris was like, “Yo, I want you to hop on this Fifth Harmony record. This is the next biggest sh-t out.” And I was like, “You don’t even gotta sell me the dream. This is my daughter’s favorite group, I’m down.” I did it so I could have something on her playlist, like, “It’s dad.” So I could be cool in her eyes and shit. I played her the clean version of the Campaign songs. This one song, called “3 Wayz” with me and Travis Scott, she said, “This is it!” I’m going with what she says. She gets it.

So this album is way overlooked right? I meant to check it out but the buzz died down so fast I kinda forgot about it. Heard it for the first time last week and I was really surprised it didn't get more love
