negate any merit his "peak work" may have earned him.

That's why I said take issue with his peak work, not with the "entirety of his career" or whatever. The crap can negate his merit, but not the merit of stuff like Talking Book, etc.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once. Why does the object of ILM's shared love have to be infallible...?

Anyway, now I guess I'll just throw my weight behind T. Rex and James Brown, since the Beatles and the Boys seem like dubious contenders.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

alex is cheating so as to sneak Killing Joke in when we are all exhausted

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Some not mentioned. In chronological order Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Elvis presley, Kinks, Skatalites, New Vaudeville Band, Slade, Motorhead, Chic, Human League, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Saint Etienne.....There's no great unifying band or artist after 1991.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

(mott the hoople won this last time, didn't they? i think we had to tie pinefox in a sack for disqualifying people he'd never heard but knew he'd hate if he did)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I veto everyone who ever released a record before 1990 ON PRINCIPLE.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

(and that's being generous)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once.

Only untimely death saves folks from this syndrome.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

err what about composers?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

If we go by Alex's "if someone has released crap they're shot down", I'd say Iggy Pop would be the first one to go. I dig "Search & Destroy" as much as the next guy, but what about that 80's catalogue? Brrrr....

I'm willing to bet I'm the only person on ILM who can't stand ABBA, and even I like a few songs.

Everyone loves *some* Kraftwerk for sure.

The closest I can get is I like Afrika Bambaata songs that sample 'em.

T. Rex.

Eh, I think everyone could agree that they were OK, but do they really inspire widespread LOVE?

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've disliked just about every band mentioned on this list, excepting New Order, whose recent work bores me anyway. The Beatles are an abomination.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

C'mon, I have to admit that even Killing Joke has released utter garbage (ladies & gentlemen, I give you OUTSIDE THE GATE), but let's remember the question: "Is there a single band/artist that EVERYONE can admit to liking?"

Personally speaking, no matter how great some of Stevie Wonder's stuff may be, I absolutely *LOATHE* some of his later work to the extent that I cannot bear to listen to *ANY* Stevie Wonder, and thus I cannot admit to liking him.

I do like the Pixies, the Clash, New Order, the Beatles, Kraftwerk, and Buzzcocks.

Daniel's spot-on about some of Ig's 80's work (let alone some of his 90's work)....some of which is irrefutably sub-par, but in the same way WL defends Stevie Wonder, I'll stand by Iggy. But, I suppose I can understand why some might not think he's exactly the messiah.

Has anyone mentioned the Rolling Stones as yet?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

how can you possibly nominate the Stones with their 25+ year track record of complete and utter shit, coupled with a monstrosity that has come to define rock n roll as a "business"?

Like you and Stevie Wonder, I honestly can't listen to the Stones anymore - even the stuff I used to love - without feeling sorta dirty and used. They're just such fucking trendhoppers and unrepentant whores.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fair point, Shakey Mo.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've disliked just about every band mentioned on this list

Do you have any suggestions then?

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

no one's shot down James Brown yet.

And really, how could they?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I did.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

no one's shot down James Brown yet.

NP: "Hell", by the man himself. It's GRATE.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Teenage Fanclub. What's not to love?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Even *I* like James Brown.

Teenage Fanclub.....yawn.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

David Bowie??

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Do you have any suggestions then?

Absolutely not. I think that's the point.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why is no one listening to me?

(I love how this thread has turned out WORSE than last time by descending into Everyone who's ever released one bad song is out. I think find band no one wants killed would be hard enough)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Britney Spears? Eminem? Anal Cunt?

thom west (thom w), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Loathe Teenage Fanclub. Go New Order! Go Al Green!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham, frankly I thought you were joking. Getting everyone to agree on someone exclusively post-1991 seems much more difficult to me. I mean, I can't think of a single band to nominate.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Strokes!!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Okay, seriously - how about the Ronettes?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Listen, Justyn, Listen.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

"The Strokes!!"

My brother told me today that everyone likes the Strokes except me. He lies. Sensible folk know they suck.

Everyone likes at least one Mercury Rev album. QED. I never hear anything really bad said about Weezer or Basement Jaxx, either.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Absolutely not. I think that's the point.

And a good point at that.

wl (wl), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who doesn't love Neil Diamond?!

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

i was thinking today that lots and lots of people like boards of canada, who doesn't like em, holla!

ron (ron), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Contradiction, Shaky Mo? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

second time's a charm:

what about composers?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

MOZART, DAMMIT!!!!!!

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

As a sidenote, how about Johnny Cash?

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boards Of Canada bore me to death, sorry. Mozart too damn happy.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 01:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

As Ned pointed out, thumbs down on MoB and the Pixies. Not so much a "I hate them", but more of a "what's the big deal?"

So has anyone shot down the Minutemen or Kraftwerk yet?

Anyway to throw a couple more names out there for consideration: Spacemen 3, The Kinks, X, Can, Velvet Underground, AC/DC

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I see your X and raise you a Huey Lewis & The News.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wonder how hopeful any of you people posting new suggestions really are.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

like 'oh I know here's one that they missed and surely everyone loves them!'

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Insert variation on the John Cage 4'33" gag here. And get me the ever-lovin' hell away from this disaster of a thread.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

i dont really care, i just happened to actually be thinking this today: "gosh, a lot of people like boards of canada" - deep thoughts are my specialty

ron (ron), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

haha you are all kidding right? come on let's face it the answer is SLEEPER

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boards of Canada are ok- as in I don't actively hate them -but I don't often see the point of playing MHTRTC when it's sitting so close to my Cocteau Twins cds.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

yuss, COCTEAUS. or has someone already done them?

alexfack, Friday, 20 September 2002 02:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know so many people who hate the Cocteaus..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dare i suggest ABBA?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 September 2002 03:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is this "bands that EVERYONE loves" or "bands that EVERYONE ON ILM loves"? If the former, I suspect no one, but James Brown may be as close as you'll get. I'm not sure I've ever met anyone who didn't at least like his stuff.

I hate the Minutemen and Neil Diamond.
