If you have paypal and 2 pounds to spare, you can now download both tracks from the Datapanik single over on Bisnation.com

The tracks sounds great - the fresh production of Return To Central/Fact 2002 with the urgent guitar energy of old school Bis.

I think I'll be downloading this when I get home.

Trivia Fans: 'Bis' originally stood for 'Black Iron Skyline' - as in the 'The The' song - until they decided it sounded naff and just decided to use 'Bis'.

Strikes me as a lateral move.

Decidedly

(erm, is it not truly Scottish baby-talk for shit?)

I got the 7" - it's nice. it sounds a lot like "music for a stranger world" - era bis rather than moving further in the direction they were headed on the last lp. manda's vocals have never sounded better.

i was noticing that on some of the Kitchen stuff her vocals were sounding downright good! especially the ace "dai kirai"

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 14 April 2005 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

downright good

Sounds like damning with faint praise!

Anton Corbijn anyone?

Wait - Sci Fi was totally bald last time I saw him! Has he had implants?

that must be an old photo.

damning with faint praise!

manda's no great singer at the best of times but i think on that song she made excellent use of what she can do

Yeah, I've always liked the character in her voice, but 'downright good' sounds like an understated 'downright great'.

Anybody going to the 10th anniversary shows?

James Mitchell, Sunday, 1 April 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Bis were perhaps the nadir of mid 90s indie, which is an achievement in itself.

-- Dom Passantino

I like Bis, they remind me of seeing Bis live and them being great, and that they were supporting Super Furry Animals, and that I saw Super Furry Animals live and they were so thoroughly dull I think I left before the end of the gig.

ohno, i forgot all about the anniversary shows. I'm busy now :(
anybody going to these?

Slumpman, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Manda Rin is DJing next month in Bristol, at Lipstick on Your Collar, which I've heard is Simon Price's favourite club night outside of London.

i still can't decide if bearsuit is the new bis but then they aren't as completely annoying so perhaps not.

lol bearsuit were around 5 years ago

i mean i like bearsuit having seen and enjoyed them live twice by accident but that 'punch from a foxy boxer' song is probably the most annoying single piece of music ever

bearsuit have been too annoying for me to like since their 2nd album.. still love the 1st album + singles comp tho

is there any need for bis to reform? i suppose the last bunch of stuff they put out was not half bad..

indie spare (electricsound), Monday, 16 November 2009 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Probably another reunion gig.

Wish they'd managed to finish the album when they were (most of) Data Panik, they had some decent material but not enough funds.

Just discovered a new Bis album is coming out on record store day! Who knew. Looks to be made up of the tunes from when they were called themselves Data Panik.

Huh, never commented on it upthread but I saw a Data Panik show quite by chance in Glasgow in 2005 during my big trip around Europe that summer -- great stuff!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 6 April 2014 16:36 (ten years ago) link

Total news to me that there were people who hated "New Transistor Heroes!" I get not caring about it but don't get hating it!

I've pretty much always been the boards resident bis Stan, but the new album "Systems Music For Home Defence" is really solid, it kind of distills all their eras into one very cohesive LP - tip!
