Admittedly, RSW were Mute's babies, and Mute are associated with the beginnings of industrial (Throbbing Gristle et al), so that may be a more subconscious reason for the association.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh yes! When I was in high school, there was a two-year period where I decided that "industrial music" = "anything I like that isn't obviously top-40 or post-punk".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Add artwork that looks inspired by Blade runner/Anime, like the 12" art for "Cocaine Sex", for example, and that propagates the association as well.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago) link

More trivial trivia: RSW trumped Public Enemy on that Mandrill riff!

RSW "Blue Eyed Boy" (1989)
Public Enemy "By The Time I Get To Arizona" (1991)

granted, the former only used it occasionally, whereas PE made it the consistent backdrop.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:21 (nineteen years ago) link

But "Blade runner/Anime" is different from fetish/propaganda posters and/or surgical things or religious things. There's a futurism in RSW that's very different from what I think of as industrial. I actually think it's more in line with 808 State, but sexier and nastier. They also did that amazing remix for The Shamen.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I dunno.. see, my introduction to industrial was the candied treats that Wax Trax! or Nettwerk records offered in the late 80s.. not the late 70s/early 80s stuff like Throbbing Gristle or SPK... and Wax Trax! certainly blended both the "Blade Runner/Anime" and "Fetish/Propaganda/surgical" thing together into these teutonic noisy bits of dance goodness. Isn't it a cliche at this point that to have a TRULY industrial/EBM song, you have to include at least one sample from Blade Runner or some Anime flick on your album?

I'm not trying to argue against your points, Spencer.. I'm just giving you my side of what I (very loosely) define as industrial in this context. We're both "right". :)

donut christ (donut), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

At this point, you can insert the neutron chunks of that recent "Simon reynolds coughed about dance music" thread here that talk about the immense crossover between dance and industrial.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I agree, it's interesting how RSW appeals to different listeners. I mention that I listen to my 'dub' compilation more. This is precisely because it sounds really futuristic and dancefloor oriented. The other disc, with the proper singles and vocals, is fun, but not as interesting to me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll admit here that I never really liked industrial although a track here or there would slip through that I would end up loving. I found it all really distasteful for a number of reasons - mainly that its 'politics' were too obvious but the performers still seemed to take themselves seriously.

the 12 Guage Turbo mix of 'Probably A Robbery' is quite Detroitian

OK, I have this unlabeled white promo 10" that's simply labeled "The Phantom".. it's a remix I've been able to find anywhere else. It could be just a bootleg remix of the song by someone else back in the day. It's good!

Just wanted to continue listing the vinyl only RSW items.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 6 May 2005 18:56 (eighteen years ago) link

sorry, it's a remix I've not been able to find anywhere else

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 6 May 2005 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

how does this differ from the normal version of the Phantom then ?

(one of my faves off the 1st album i have to say)

mark e (mark e), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:12 (eighteen years ago) link

It's just another remix.. different break that's loop behind/in front of the song.. different truncation.. it isn't THEE GREAT LOST REMIX or anything, but I'm willing to digitize it for analysis for the RSW surgeons in the haus.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I need it, STAT!

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Sidetrack joke's lines are all flat, Dr. Chow. Dr. Perry, that overdose of Sutherland may be the reason. We'll discuss this in my office later today.

WHEEL IT OUT! COMING THROUGH!

re: phanton 10"

is it this?

http://www.discogs.com/release/221980

Maybe it's a bootleg edit? I have a bootleg I got at Rock-N-Soul, a place that is mostly hip-hop and disco/house/club classics that has Ozone Breakdown on it.

The funniest thing I got I won on eBay, it was a 7" white label advertised as "Cooking Sex". Sure enough, it says Cooking Sex on it in handwriting, and was on Rhythm King, I'm wondering if they weren't worried about sending it radio stations as Cocaine Sex or something!

I want this:

http://www.discogs.com/release/413655

and wonder if its the same version that ended up on In Dub.

WHY...WHY didn't I talk to Dan Selzer...

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 6 May 2005 21:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Dan, yes! That's the one I have!

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 6 May 2005 21:12 (eighteen years ago) link

dude, it's my fault. I was all stressed out because nobody was at the party and it was so freaking humid and I hadn't washed my hair or shave in days and felt so nasty I just did my social butterfly thing running around self-depracatingly apologizing for the turnout and alternately trying to get the party started. Note that, in the end, I was quite happy with the small but dedicated dancefloor and considering the rain, was quite happy overall. This is, btw, what happens every week, even when it's crowded. I don't relax untill about 2:30 and even then, for like 5 minutes.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 6 May 2005 21:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I talked about RSW over in that LFO post, but to repeat myself... yeah, I saw them live and you can read all about it on Stylus: http://www.stylusmagazine.com/feature.php?ID=552

Unfucking real.

I also interveiwed Danny Briottet a few years later for Alternative Press (but it never ran) and told him about it and he laughed and laughed. I know for sure there is a Layo & Bushwacka remix of I THINK "The Phantom" that came out around then because it was on Danny's mix CD. Apparently Danny and Gary Asquith haven't spoken in years either... he was pretty spiteful toward him on the phone.

Anyway, they were universally brilliant. Yes, for sure three different eras, but all of them rock the house in different ways. What about the love for the self-titled comeback single with the Serge Gainbourg shit all up in it? The more I hear "Howyadoin" the more I think I never gave it enough credit on release. That said, I do own like 4 copies of it...

that's exactly what they were worried about. my 12" has that written on it too.

haha "Cooking-ah.. Cooking-ah fa' sex! UNNNNH!"

In the U.S., if RSW were known here then, you would have had to change that to "Cocaine Sects", because you know drug talk is OK in the U.S. but certainly not sex!

"Screwin' Blow for Jesus"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 May 2005 20:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw them perform at the long-defunct Ministry in Miami Beach in April '91. Good show, though a lad of 16 must be forgiven for thinking they sounded like Meat Beat Manifesto...

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:17 (eighteen years ago) link

"Screwin' Blow for Jesus"

That's an early Flaming Lips song, now, Ned. Give us a break.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Cooking Sects is fast and effective, you miss out you might feel neglected...

Todd, I used to have the CD-single w/ Prob a Rob 12 gauge but gave it to someone because, you know, i had the vinyl...

But let's definately talk mp3 trading, get it all together.

I always liked much of Howyoudoin, though I hated the title song. Disc 1 of my personal RSW 2 CD set contains Liquid Up, John Holmes, Positive ID, Blast "Em Out and Brixton. All GREAT pop songs. It was the remix album where I thought they made their first really bad move. It has moments, but while In Dub is just totally unique, Next Chapter of Dub just sounded like then contemporary trip-hop or whatever.

A highpoint of my life was sitting in a middle-eastern resteraunt and hearing the song that John Holmes samples.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:28 (eighteen years ago) link

oh yeah...Renegade Soundwave (7" mix) is on the CD as well. That's the one where the guitar drops out for a bit, which it doesn't on the CD version. It's a HUGE difference!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Next Chapter of Dub just sounded like then contemporary trip-hop or whatever

Except for "Positive Mindscape" which is its saving grace.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:40 (eighteen years ago) link

and since you're all asking, disc 1 is more song oriented and disc 2 is more mix/club oriented. The only dissapointment is I don't have Space Gladiator Dub or any of the Women Respond to Bass remixes on my computer, and if I did, they wouldn't fit. Perhaps I'd swap one of the Women Respond remixes for the original. Also, only using the orig. versions of Ozone Breakdown:

Disc 1:

Renegade Soundwave 7" mix
Blue Eyed Boy
Lucky Luke
On TV
Kray Twins
Liquid Up
Probably a Robbery
Traitor
Biting My Nails (soundclash version)
Space Gladiator
Murder Music
Pocket Porn
Cocaine Sex
John Holmes
Positive ID
Blast 'Em Out
Brixton
Can't Get Used to Losing You

Disc 2:

Ozone Breakdown
The Phantom
Biting My Nails (Bass Numb Chapter)
Thunder II
Deadly
Funky Dropout
Bacteria
Pocket Porn Dub
Cocaine Sex (Sub-Aqua Overdrive)
Black Eye Boy
Mash-Up
Women Respond to Bass
Probably a Robbery (12 Gauge Turbo)
The Phantom (In Dub version, version 90 or whatever it's called)
Manphibian
Transition

It's very suspicious that I haven't posted on this thread.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, I have that one "The Phantom" 10" remix from 1998 or so that I can digitize.

I also have the Women Respond To Bass 12". there are four tracks on that total. And I have Space Gladiator Dub. But I think Dan has this on vinyl, but just hasn't digitized it yet.

I think the major project is to get all the RSW remixes of other bands onto one CD (or 2 if needed.)

PLZ PLZ SOMEONE COMPILE ALL THESE

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 13 May 2005 00:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I have Women Respond to Bass on 12", just not digitized. The giant pink elephant in the middle of the room here is the totally wicked RSW/Todd Terry mash-up that is known as The Phantom (Turntable Scratch Mix). Interestingly, this is one of the easiest tracks to find online, but only in the version that appears mixed into the Ken Ishii X-Mix DJ mix, thus it's got some other song at the beginning and end and is at the wrongs speed. I'll digitise my copy, but I swear it's one of those recors that sounds like crap due to over-playing.

Mr. Hutlock from above made me a RSW mix tape during college including the Depeche Mode remix, that's easy to download. I have the Liason Dangereuses remix on vinyl. I also have the track they sorta did for the Amorres Perros soundtrack. They did at least 2 Pop Will Eat Itself remixes, neither of which I have.

Looking at Discogs...I'd like to hear the Sabres mix of Brixton.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:18 (eighteen years ago) link

oh hey tracer hand...I see you made it back safely from the New Order after-party!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:19 (eighteen years ago) link

hey hutlock, i saw that tour (mute tour with derrick may & rsw) in pittsburgh (must have been not a day or two before/after you did) and i was suitably blown away, first by mr may and second by rsw. i don't remember all that much besides getting to meet May, buying 808 State's "Ex.El" on the way to the club and being mesmerized by the show, but your review was awesome. such a memory!
i do remember that in between may & rsw they showed a bunch of videos of current Mute artists and i was totally thrilled to see an inspiral carpets video for the first time. ;) nice one!

heywood jablomi (heywood), Friday, 13 May 2005 07:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure there's only one PWEI mix, but I can definitely contribute it if someone does want to get a best-of/remix thingy together

Dan you could use the beginning and end from your tired record to replace the Ken Ishii one? better than nothing...?

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 13 May 2005 10:59 (eighteen years ago) link

i always thought rsw never put their heart into any remixes they did. the los ninos one in particular is really weak.

i'll rip the first ever rsw single before they changed their name and post a link to it later.

i will also dig out the 'turntable scratch mix' too.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 13 May 2005 11:11 (eighteen years ago) link

here is the first rsw single. it's from '86 and is called 'underneath the arches'. at this point they were called the jackal but mute heard it, were blown away and snapped them up and they changed the name. it sounds off the time but i still really love it. the stuttered sampling of 'oi mate!' is plain stoopid and the idea of the bombastic intro is something they would also use to great effect of 'kray twins'. great percussion too.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 13 May 2005 11:59 (eighteen years ago) link

wow. i love all that 80's scratch effects and big drums .. very ON-U Soundsystem .. (actually VERY in parts)

Dan, if you played it as much as I think you have, I can volunteer to digitize it.. that is the Phantom (turntable scratch) mix.
