halfway through this and i have no idea what kind of artist ty wants to be or what kind of artist he ever was

I see what you mean though, and I honestly find it kind of refreshing and interesting, as if he's in the process of figuring something out. There's something going on here with the return of the album skit which probably happens because someone has told him to open up a bit more about who he really is. But it's mostly confusing right now. If it sells (it won't) we'll come to think of it as significant.

i think it's pretty clear ty likes a pretty diverse range of artists and appreciates different things about them, he came up on KROQ and his dad's funk music and his peers' gangster rap and is all about integrating those things

this is overselling it. it's not like there are rock or funk songs on the album. it's more like he's being pulled in one direction by contemporary radio trends (well kinda, as much as mustardwave stuff or metro boomin could be considered that) and in the other by a more classic OG r&b sound. i think the album is pretty awesome but i see what lex is saying is all.

'solid' is a pop rock record w/ babyface and dramatic strings

there's clearly an individual sensibility in this album but ty's strangely opaque and tbh imo fairly unpleasant persona makes it difficult to correlate with any sense of being led by personal sentiment. he kinda comes off as just having a lizardly observant prowess at various things

'bring it out of me' is the track that stuck with me, maybe more accurately to me, as this album's spirit animal, not because good but because most truthfully perfunctory (it's not openly dishonest or cynical - he never fully is - but...)

and before anyone gets basic by persona i obv don't mean he says asshole things, it's just idk a slimy loner vibe between the lines

he has a bold facility with guest spots that's quite pleasing (having 40 on 'saved' instead of literally anyone else deserves pointing out, plus je drop, astute mmts use, take your pick) (no blahzay blahzay invitation tho :/). reminiscent of early kanye but again crucially without the same kid-in-a-sweetstore stunt 101 esprit

I haven't given the album enough of a chance yet, need to spend more time w it, pr copy or not though it's evidently true that's what he's aiming for, can't say whether he hits the mark

Random: I've been told Bernard wright worked on several arrangements, Ty has his music nerd bases covered

Xp to Jordan also besides that I'm talking about a certain kroq pop sensibility, more than what types of vocals he uses or whatever

Horses In the Stable is my fav on here I think. Solid through Miracle/whatever is a great stretch.

yeah that part is great. "miracle" is really cool and "wherever" is a great beach house style track with more upgraded production. i actually really like the kanye/diddy track too, it's funny that he did an overt gospel record with them.

love the line in horses in stable that's like 'met a girl in catalina, took it down last time i see her'

i keep going back to solid, so many great lines

i just keep running "credit" and "miracle/whenever" on a loop

a bunch of this album -- including primarily those two songs -- were done by d'mile, hero of dirty money "shades"

credit is my shit yeah. back half of this drags a bit though. 'bring it out of me' filed under mustardwave that totally misses the mark

i like that one but it's weird, it's like just a mustard song on fast forward. bizarre that he worked with stargate and ended up with a song that is such a mustard rip.

but yeah it seems like they weren't really sure what to do with the singles. "sittin pretty" (which i love) transitions into "when i see ya" pretty well but "blase" and "only right" are def just tacked on there, and then "bring it out of me" feels tacked on. "actress" is kind of a letdown but the sa ra track is dope.

the first run of 10 songs i find pretty flawless tho

yeah the kelz colab is disapoiinting for sure. sa ra track is out of place but individually good. track with jagged edge is ok but otherwise the first 2/3 of this is great.

he sells horses in the stable so well i come out of it somehow feeling sad for him

i think this is pretty much the ideal major label ty record but i wouldn't be surprised if he did a future-style thing and tried to go back to his roots to reboot his career a bit

yeah i don't necessarily think this album could have been better. just that now that its out, he'll be a little more free to be like, 'fuck it' and not chase the Current Sound

This album has so many (conflicting but) working definitions of "smooth".

it's the middle stretch of this album that really sags imo. obv never listening to "la" again but "saved" through to "horses in the stable" is pretty impeccable, then the trey and sevyn collabs are good-not-great, but then "miracle/wherever" and "guard down" completely halt the momentum...they sound so scratchily recorded and aimless and go on forever. then it only really regains its stride with the banger singles shoved at the end

feel like "credit" could have leaned a lot more on its humorous premise...ty doesn't do half of what prime kellz would have done with the potentially ludicrous hook and the guest spot the song needs is sevyn running with the humour not being bland and mushy

def see how "blasé"/"only right"/"bring it out of me" feel tacked on but they're also better songs than much of the album

Miracle/Wherever is too long but it features some of Ty's best singing.

The arrangements throughout are gorgeous, but my favorite moment is Credit's piano/sax coda

here's where i admit rtc was right & i think this album is kind of disappointing on the whole

individual moments shine for me (esp "solid") but i think its mainly that the erm sexiness of beach house—the louche lothario has been replaced not so much by a scumbag but by someone going thru the motions in a way that gets no enjoyment from it

idk. im optimistic about beach house 3

i also think his EP with Wiz Khalifa this year was #actually pretty tight, even if it makes you feel like you're taking wiz khalifa's side in some domestic drama

i don't really want him to be sexy. his misogyny sorta has that z-ro style 'ho just leave me alone playing xbox by my lonesome' almost cozy vibe. also the album has, like, musical humor that complements lyrical humour in a great way; the background vocs on "Know Ya" (strookiiin')

i thought what jordan wrote about credit applies to most of the album actually, the songwriting stands alone. like "Straight up" is a how had no one phrased that verse melody before

an album doesnt really need every style and every guest kinda a weird approach some imo, def jams on there tho, at least one major turd too

the Kanye moment is a turd but such a quality lol that i listen to it every time

this album is almost entirely stylistically coherent, like remove track 2 and then everything up to blasé has ml the same vibe, at which pt it's refreshing to switch gears

I guess most of them are him talking to TC now that I'm listening closer. The TV announcer one is kinda annoying. I've listened to that transition between "Straight Up" and "Solid" enough times that I have it basically memorized.
