I prefer the Bleach version but that might just be because I've listened to it more often.

The next song up had the most #1 votes (including mine).

Nice!

how's life, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:07 (eight years ago) link

Ah yeah! Fucking love overloaded bass sound on 'Breed' ... 'About a Girl' and 'Aneurysm' are both way too low, and YES! 'Frances Farmer...' in the Top 10!

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:08 (eight years ago) link

I miss the comfort of being sad.

Cobain's self-mocking croak is key.

i continue to find all this affection for Bleach shocking

it's their best record, or at least the only one I can stand to listen to anymore

Οὖτις, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:11 (eight years ago) link

Yeah the vocal on Frances Farmer is what really puts it up there for me (xpost).

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:12 (eight years ago) link

This was my #9... hah!

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:17 (eight years ago) link

I probably underrated Francis Farmer on my ballot tbh.

Also, I pegged Aneurysm for the top spot; I wonder if it will end up being my #2...

I didn't vote for it, but I'm totally surprised by the non-appearance of 'Mr. Moustache' in the lower half of the Top 40.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:32 (eight years ago) link

Wow I was sure All Apologies would be top 5. It's better than Heart Shaped Box

kornrulez6969, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:38 (eight years ago) link

Agreed

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:40 (eight years ago) link

This was my #19 and, not counting Unplugged, is my favourite album closer of theirs. I love the riff, the vocal melody, and the "all in all is all we are" outro. For some reason I've always heard a little bit of R.E.M. in this.

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:40 (eight years ago) link

Oh god, yeah, this is miles better than 'Heart-Shaped Box', but then again pretty much the rest of In Utero is.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:49 (eight years ago) link

I was one of the FFWHHROS #1's.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I wrote out the full lyrics to it and a couple other songs on the covers of the three-ring binder I carried freshman year.

Jesus Krist of Novoselic (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 13 November 2015 20:53 (eight years ago) link

These last two were my #4 and #3. Love the drumming on In Bloom.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:56 (eight years ago) link

did anyone else put If You Must, Spank Thru, Endless Nameless, Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Thru the Strip, The Other Improv, or Beeswax on their ballots? all of my songs have placed except Heart Shaped Box, Drain You, and On a Plain...

i voted for "Endless, Nameless," disappointed that it missed the top 40. one of the few famous hidden tracks of the CD era that i think makes for a really interesting, appropriate to the album and the 'true' closing track.

some dude, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:56 (eight years ago) link

'Frances Farmer...' is an incredible song, definitely one of my all-time favourites. Love the chord progression in the verses!

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 20:57 (eight years ago) link

XPS I think the others were "Blow Up The Outside World" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings"...there was also a Nine Inch Nails logo.

Jesus Krist of Novoselic (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 13 November 2015 20:57 (eight years ago) link

I also voted for 'Endless, Nameless', but it's the one song on my ballot that I know isn't going to place at this stage. 18 of mine have now already placed, and I have a feeling that the remaining one will place quite soon.

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:00 (eight years ago) link

Did anyone vote for 'Beans'!?

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:01 (eight years ago) link

damn that is one angsty binder! i had a canvas binder that i drew a few band logos on, including the Nirvana smiley face.

some dude, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:02 (eight years ago) link

I had a 5X7 card on which I'd written good New Order lyrics.

Here's a song with an opening couplet I admire more than the rest of the song yet I still voted for it.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 13 November 2015 21:12 (eight years ago) link

Yup, there it is: my #8!

Everything from this point onwards is too high.

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:13 (eight years ago) link

i was one of the #1 votes for "Serve," it's really their most Beatles-on-jet-fuel song

some dude, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:19 (eight years ago) link

"Frances Farmer" was my #1 too. In Utero pretty much feels like a perfect rock album for me but "Frances" is one song where every moment seems great.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 13 November 2015 21:23 (eight years ago) link

Explosive intro, dynamite first line, perfectly timed little bursts of feedback, then that devastating chorus.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 13 November 2015 21:30 (eight years ago) link

There was a 24 hour period towards the very end of the voting where this next one was #1.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:31 (eight years ago) link

daaaamn i would've loved "On A Plain" as our #1

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 13 November 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link

on a plain is the nirvana song I think of most.

you too could be called a 'Star' by the Compliance Unit (jim in glasgow), Friday, 13 November 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link

I would have loved this to have been #1 more than any song that I know is going to follow, that's for sure! Still a little bit too high, though.

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:45 (eight years ago) link

I remember the first time I heard 'On a Plain', the sudden vocal harmony on "love myself better than you" for me was just like "YEAH!"

Turrican, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:47 (eight years ago) link

the closest they ever came to the vaselines.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 13 November 2015 21:48 (eight years ago) link

yes listen to this terrible strumming
https://vimeo.com/39267368

Yeah, that's definitely a nice picked line (and I apparently actually have that album so I should probably just avoid talking about Dylan). Was Dylan playing it, though? Some writers credit Bruce Langhorne. I looked up a few live clips and saw Dylan strumming the chords in all of them.

Yeah, lines from this, "Frances Farmer", and "Serve the Servants" get in my head all the time.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 13 November 2015 21:55 (eight years ago) link

smells like a boring top 3 lol jk

billstevejim, Friday, 13 November 2015 22:01 (eight years ago) link

I really like the modal mixture in "Lithium".

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 13 November 2015 22:05 (eight years ago) link

"Drain You" is my favorite, but I honestly have no idea whether it's a fan favorite or ILM consensus track...
