i would have, but unfortunately the venue also booked this ska band, whose sublime and 311 covers drew in an appreciative crowd. i wasn't ready for that.

Playing to the crowd doesn't necessarily mean giving them what they know they want to hear. A good dj can give the crowd what they didn't know they wanted to hear. I'm sure people at the last party I played didn't walk in expecting to hear gogo and 80s electro, but the dance floor was packed and they had a good time.

What I really meant tho was reading the energy of the crowd as much as their tastes. If the crowd is ready to party, play to that. If the crowd is trying to kick back at the bar, keep the energy lower.
