Don't knock Friday music, their shot sounds amazing!! All remastered from the OG tapes. It's crazy that people like the cocktail soundtrack that much, but what do I know.

shot = shit = products
That entire Rhino 2017 list posted recently fits here.

I was at a friend's house flipping through their bins, a couple hundred records and I'd say at least 60% of them belong to this thread - pretty sure I in fact saw the Cocktail soundtrack reissue. Most of the rest were pretty cool looking soundtracks for minor animated films and things like that, but it was kind of staggering to come face to face with "oh THAT'S who's buying these damn things!" Based on these friends it seems like it's a sweet spot between, they like listening to soundtracks and scores, they are movie buffs who like movie poster design so having the big LP sized cover is a major plus, and they just like vinyl as a hangover from college days when they never would have been able to afford this shit but were genuinely buying dollar-bin oddities and new releases by local acts. So maybe not quite as sinister and irritating as I'd been inclined to write off this rend but man... is the Cocktail soundtrack really particularly good?

i think there's a search and destroy thread for vinyl pressings, maybe particularly related to reissues (i may have started it? idk.) i'm getting a little burned out on seeing 4 Men With Beards and their offshoot Plain Recordings handling a sizable chunk of the reissue game. the latter put out reissues of the first three Saint Etienne albums a year ago or so, and they're just trash. They obviously copied them from a CD and in fact the vinyl reissue of Tiger Bay just uses the same track list as the CD, including the useless pair of bonus remixes at the end.
um anyway...i probably asked this before but what are the reissue labels that are consistently excellent and which are inconsistent or terrible?Light in the Attic seems to do a really great job, i guess.

Ugh yeah I think my Enter the Wu-Tang is 4MWB and I've always been vaguely disappointed with it.

quick take:
good: LITA, Numero, Vinyl On Demand, Dark Entries, Bureau B
hit and miss: Superior Viaduct
teh suck: 4MWB, Doxy

are ANY 4MWB reissues decent? i've got a couple Cluster ones and a Scott 4 and it's been awhile since I pulled them out. i don't remember anything egregious but it could be one of those things where if i heard a proper remastering and pressing job it would be like night and day.

the tim buckley reissues i used to have were pretty good from memory & big star's third sounded great. the john fahey america fiasco made me super wary about their product but still pick certain things up if i see them going cheap.

yeah that Big Star one is good. as I said (I think) on the other thread nomar is remembering, you basically have to look for the words "remastered from the original analog tapes" or some such when considering a vinyl reissue these days, otherwise u can assume it was straight from CD.
did not know about any issues with Fahey's America, I have the Fahey 6LP box on 4MWB but it does not sound appreciably better than the originals I have (just cleaner), and there are a few (like, 3-4) nasty pressing flaw (I assume) glitches for like tenths of a second over 6 LPs, not perfect but OK.
― sleeve, Friday, 3 February 2017 01:50 (seven years ago) link
main thing with america was they copied it directly from the expanded cd version including the shortened version of mark 1:15 that was cut so everything would fit on the one cd. also remember reports that some copies of the second lp consisted of side 1 being pressed on both sides (first thing i checked for when i got mine!)... also major scuffs :-/
mention of glitches reminds me: their reissue of anne briggs' first album is atrocious.

there's this other label 1972, which reissued some Stereolab LPs a couple years back, among other reissues like the Aphex Twin ones. stereolab hates these reissues and is still trying to work at their own reissue series. not sure if they're affiliated with 4MWB et al, but they seem to be another dodgy CD sourced crew.

what is going on with this Garth Brooks "Legacy" 7xLP boxset? apparently Amazon was selling them for like $25 before jacking up the price to $60...you can still get them from resellers for $30-35. There must've been a million copies of this thing printed. It probably has singlehandedly set new vinyl releases back 6 months. Do I like Garth enough to pick this up myself?

He's obsessed with selling more physical copies of releases than anyone in history.
