Single's OK but nowhere near as good as "Disparate Youth".

― daavid, Thursday, November 5, 2015 5:38 AM (12 hours ago)

Yes but that's unfair, that's like her best single of all time.

I like it because backing track sounds very inspired by William Onyeabor. What's not to like?

"Disparate Youth" and "The Keepers" are two of the best singles of the last five years imo

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 November 2015 18:34 (three years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Such a shame that neither of those songs were hits. The second album was really underrated.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 November 2015 20:26 (three years ago) Permalink

It had that wide, instant appeal that great pop songs have. Almost everytime it gets played on one of my bars people ask what song it is.

three months pass...

I just listened to "Banshee" and my first reaction was "huh, this is garbage" ;_;

its subtle brume (DJP), Friday, 12 February 2016 18:08 (two years ago) Permalink

Loved the first single, not feeling the subsequent two singles.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 12 February 2016 21:50 (two years ago) Permalink

There seems to be absolutely no hype for this album at all. I didn't even know there had been two other singles.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 12 February 2016 22:48 (two years ago) Permalink

I had no idea she had a new album coming. I just remember that one summer in the 00's when she was playing in like everyone bar I went to.

The album is now streaming on NPR. I am two songs into it. It's remarkably terrible.

its subtle brume (DJP), Thursday, 18 February 2016 19:29 (two years ago) Permalink

The first two songs make "Banshee" seem tolerable, btw

its subtle brume (DJP), Thursday, 18 February 2016 19:31 (two years ago) Permalink

That's a shame. The cover art is wonderful

art baengels (monotony), Thursday, 18 February 2016 20:30 (two years ago) Permalink

Half of this album is really great and half of it is kind of forgettable. Banshee has grown on me a lot since I first heard it a couple of weeks ago. Kind of reminds me of something on Ze Records.

Love that she's brought some of the new wave influences back from her first album on Rendezvous Girl and Who I Thought You Were. Apart from those two songs, the second half is kind of a drag. There's one that sounds like a really bad Siouxsie & The Banshees impression.

Chasing Shadows is so good. Her version of Need Ur Love by Charli XCX.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 19 February 2016 18:05 (two years ago) Permalink

When I heard Chasing Shadows I thought it was the same sample as hard knock life

iLoveMakonnen collaborations sound so patronizing and are bad

This is kind of fun:

Mods should change thread name to Santogold / Santigold

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 07:20 (two years ago) Permalink

two years pass...

I genuinely never expected to care or even particularly think about her again but the new album is excellent.

Matt DC, Monday, 13 August 2018 17:39 (four months ago) Permalink

will check it out but my first reaction when I saw this thread bumped was "oh yeah, her, lol"

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 13 August 2018 17:51 (four months ago) Permalink

Yeah, The Gold Fire Sessions is a lot of fun. It really took me by surprise. I hope people don't sleep on it.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 02:26 (four months ago) Permalink

What there’s a new record??
Mods please fix this thread title. It’s Santi
I liked maybe three tracks off 99 cents - apt title, why would one pay more for that record really.

Disparate youth is a summer anthem forever

doesn't it bother anyone that this thread title is misspelled? how does anyone even find it to revive it?

akm, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 19:40 (four months ago) Permalink

She was called Santogold initially right up until the release of her first album (called Santogold)

oh well that makes sense. because for a long time in my head I thought that was the name and then when I saw it wasn't I just attributed it to this thread.

akm, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 19:59 (four months ago) Permalink

Debut album still had the “Santogold” moniker, she changed it in 2009 because she was sued by “Santo Gold, a jeweller, filmmaker and infomercial-based salesman”

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 20:05 (four months ago) Permalink

the point still stands that the thread title should be amended.

Anyone ever hear her pre-Santigold band Stiffed? I absolutely love the EP they put out Sex Sells which I reviewed at the time for Alternative Press.

It was produced by Darryl Jennifer of the Bad Brains and Chuck Treece played drums. Such a great record! Catchy and fun! It doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere (unlike the follow-up full-length which is very good but not great) but the CD can be bought for a pittance.

Wasn't the thread called Santogold/Santogold at some point, or did I imagine that? Why not call it that so it appears on all the searches?

daavid, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 01:58 (four months ago) Permalink

I'm not a data scientist but I don't think it would make any difference

I meant Santogold/Santigold obv.

StanM, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 08:24 (four months ago) Permalink

This is alright but after 99 Cents anything would seem halfway decent. Maybe it’s a grower

Ross, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 14:03 (four months ago) Permalink

how the fuck am I going to find the Santogold thread now
