No, that's pretty much what I am looking for

It turns out that what Alice is using in school is not computer based, it's a test paper with music played from a CD or some such.
However, it would be good if there was a program that did this, for practice.

I don't know what level you're looking for. Macgamut has its faults but is used to teach dictation at many universities. It's what I've always used.
On a more basic level, there are melodic dictation exercises at these sites:http://www.teoria.com/en/exercises/md.php (Entry doesn't seem to be working for me but maybe it's better on PCs/non-El Capitan Macs idk)http://trainer.thetamusic.com/en/content/melodic-dictationhttp://pitchimprover.com/

My niece is 8 (today!) and I'm trying to find a music notation software to help her learn the most basic notation -- i.e. which notes on the stave correspond to which notes on the keyboard and vice versa
(then note lengths and so on)
I tried the softonic solfeggio free trial, but to be honest its level 1 test is too hard, she is really only just starting -- she's been learning for a year, but is basically still not reading the notes, just the fingering
hullo ilx!

I haven't looked at any software in this space so I have no recommendations ;_;
