I never expected a member of portishead and a member of talk talk to be snappy with a follow-up tho tbh

What are the other Talk Talk guys up to, Hollis aside?

I can't find any signs of activity from any of them. Is Webb definitely involved with new gibbons album?

Not new but new to me (and not mentioned here):

relistened to this tonight. i still remembered most songs as if they had been engraved in my brain though i hadn't listened to them for maybe ten years. i was a little disappointed, in my memory the music was stronger, the tunes were less obvious. sometimes it would be better not to revisit old albums, as it is almost impossible to relive the original enthusiasm.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Saturday, 31 October 2015 22:32 (eight years ago) link

The only song I remember from the list of songs is "Tom the Model," which is the only one with a strong melody, iirc. I did see Gibbons and Webb and band live, but remember nil.

Hah why did you have to do such a nefarious pairing? I meant collabs like out of season or that black sabbath cover she did.

Presumably that photo is tied to the release of this:

Looking forward to hearing this. I highly doubt it will be as good as the definitive Dawn Upshaw recording, but we shall see.

Eh, I much prefer the Soviet-era recordings – the first one, with Stefania Woytowicz and Ernest Bour in particular.

Looking forward to this.

Speaking of that recording, the French label Erato re-released it in 1986 as the soundtrack to Maurice Pialat's Police, with Gérard Depardieu and Sophie Marceau, heh:

Yes! I preordered it and the pre-release downloads are all very nice.

I highly doubt it will be as good as the definitive Dawn Upshaw recording, but we shall see.

― the word dog doesn't bark (anagram)

I agree that the Dawn Upshaw recording is probably the definitive one, but I don't think that surpassing it was the goal here. Gibbons has a vocal style that's miles away from classically trained sopranos, so I'm very curious to hear her version. The performance got very good reviews when it took place here back in 2014, so I'm excited it's finally being released. I think in general the 3rd Symphony lends itself well to modern reinterpretations (loved Colin Stetson's take on it, too, especially live).

Yeah, the Stetson is great

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:03 (five years ago) link

I'm enjoying the Rustin' Man; his voice is very like Robert Wyatt / late Bowie.

fetter, Friday, 1 February 2019 10:08 (five years ago) link

bit of a bill fay vibe in places too. enjoying it so far!

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Friday, 1 February 2019 13:16 (five years ago) link

yeah the three tracks I listened to last night were great.

akm, Friday, 1 February 2019 13:38 (five years ago) link

Wow, this is excellent and he totally has that Wyatt / later Bowie timbre in his voice. Pretty stellar year, even this early.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Friday, 1 February 2019 16:45 (five years ago) link

He sounds like a mixture of Davids Palmer and Bowie!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 1 February 2019 17:18 (five years ago) link

also yes if I heard this out somewhere I would have assumed it was a Robert Wyatt album I'd never heard before. Finally gave the whole thing a listen, excellent.

akm, Friday, 1 February 2019 18:29 (five years ago) link

I'd love to know what's prompted him to record another album at this point. Perhaps Bowie and the thought of his own morality.

'The World's In Town' is still so new, but such an amazing song. . . it doesn't even seem real at this point.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Friday, 1 February 2019 23:10 (five years ago) link

from what I can glean he has been making the album for many years and he wanted to play most parts himself so learned a lot of instruments well enough to be able to play them and recorded the requisite parts over a long period of time then assembled and mixed them into tracks.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 2 February 2019 00:13 (five years ago) link

here it is

"Apparently he wanted to learn the assorted instruments he plays on it well enough to be comfortable recording himself, and had to build up the arrangements as his capabilities increased. Each instrument’s contribution to the album was recorded in turn, rather than track by track"

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 2 February 2019 00:16 (five years ago) link

Ah so Lee Harris plays on there!

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 2 February 2019 02:15 (five years ago) link

“Robert Wyatt sings Blackstar” is eerily spot-on. It’s actually a bit distracting at first, like when you watch Christian Slater and it takes a few minutes to spot Christian Slater behind the guy practicing his Nicholson impression in the bathroom mirror.

That said I love the shit out of this

This is definitely one of the best folk records ever recorded, but somehow it slipped under my radar untill recently.

Drift Code has been growing on me gradually over the last year, at the moment I'm listening to little else.

fetter, Saturday, 11 January 2020 20:02 (four years ago) link

drift code would be nice if he would not sing. his voice really sounds like an old man without any teeth left. it reminds me of robert wyatt but i love wyatt's voice. the main difference being that webb's voice is about two octaves lower and so absolutely unmusical. just terrible. besides that a fine album for sure.

Yeah, classic excelsior

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 12 January 2020 09:04 (four years ago) link

I love his voice. "Drift Code" is easily the best album of the year for me.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Sunday, 12 January 2020 09:25 (four years ago) link

I don't love his voice, but there's definitely some interesting tension between the big pop moments on this record--like, say, the chorus of Our Tomorrows, or the climax of The World's in Town--and the vehicle chosen to deliver those payoff moments, which plays a large part of what makes the album memorable for me
