seems like you pulling rhetorical bullshit might be the problem here forks, what do you think?

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:04 (eight years ago) link

"He kind of weirded me out at first"

"he's a total weirdo"

"v creepy"

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:05 (eight years ago) link

yes, that's exactly what you described.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:07 (eight years ago) link

RS, is this line of argument in character? I'm pretty sure i never really noticed you on any other thread except as a background voice so i don't know if i touched a nerve or this is just par for the course and i should ignore you. Please advise.

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:08 (eight years ago) link

i guess i am enough in the background that you haven't roped me in with your weird smears in the past? maybe just stop being a dickhead and we can all go back to being buddies.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:10 (eight years ago) link

the episodes immediately after his run felt like amateur hour even though they were average, run-of-the-mill jeopardy matches.

Yeah totally, I remember thinking they seemed really bland but one of them had all three contestants with $10,000+ going into final which is usually a pretty good game.

I'd have felt bad being the person to beat Jackson or Chu or whoever, just knowing you happened to catch them in some fluke off-moment when they are obviously so much better at it than most people and you'd probably lost the next episode anyway.

joygoat, Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:11 (eight years ago) link

xp I consider myself advised.

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:34 (eight years ago) link

The guy who bumped off Matt seemed genuinely surprised. I seem to recall no one got the final jeopardy question right?
There were at least three of the Jackson episodes where the people playing against him had really solid games but still couldn't climb the mountain. It's a fluke-y game!

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:40 (eight years ago) link

I wonder how much precedent there is for an athlete in one of those sports to not just win a bunch in a row but completely blow the opponents out for a dozen straight events.

Tyson, too, I guess.

If Matt Jackson's Jeopardy dominance resulted in 13 second episodes, I'd be cooler with him.

GM, Thursday, 29 October 2015 21:36 (eight years ago) link

Anyone who's done high school quiz bowl has met dozens of guys with Matt Jackson's playing personality/style. It was actually kind of refreshing to see the play-to-destroy strategy on the usually more congenial Jeopardy stage!

intheblanks, Thursday, 29 October 2015 21:44 (eight years ago) link

i mean, that level of intensity is what you find in any quiz bowl match, including the quasi-oppositional stance to the person reading the questions. Given that this guy is basically a college quiz bowl legend, it's not surprising that he plays like that.

intheblanks, Thursday, 29 October 2015 21:47 (eight years ago) link

He was much better than the polo shirt wearing grad student / stand up comedian guy who won a couple of days a few shows after Matt left, I wanted to punch that guy all the time.

if this guy stayed on any longer, one of his interview anecdotes was bound to be a murder he committed imo

"Groan"

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 12 November 2015 00:56 (eight years ago) link

Right? He downplayed a lot of his standard hypermasculine gamesmanship, definitely had a different level of respect for the competition. That's the first time I saw him miss two out of three daily doubles and he was still a beast. Betting $2 on final was a REALLY ballsy move.

Surprised to learn this thread wasn't about Ken Jennings' current joke controversy re: the Star Wars fan who died. (Which I thought was both cruel and kind of amusing, if hacky). Still can't believe he got away with "Nothing sadder than a hot person in a wheelchair.” (Which I didn't even think was a joke, but I certainly thought he was both ballsy and an asshole to not backtrack on at all).
He seems to have lots of pals in the comedy world who have his back a lot.

Tournament finals should be a blast. Rooting for Alex Jacob personally but would be happy with any of them winning.

cwkiii, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:07 (eight years ago) link

Alex with the "ALEVE" punchline to the final answer yesterday was some grade A jeopardy comedy

Clay, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:08 (eight years ago) link

Matt Jackson's jazz hands while answering "What is Cabaret?" tonight was all kinds of adorable.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:34 (eight years ago) link

alex came in with a specific strategy and it worked big time. poor matt looked broken.

i made a scope for my laser musket out of some (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 November 2015 01:26 (eight years ago) link

what a game, definitely gasped at Alex risking 10k on that daily double and then pulling it out

Michael F Gill, Friday, 20 November 2015 02:02 (eight years ago) link

Double or nothing TWICE! In retrospect, it's the one strategy that was going to work against a player that strong and the chips fell the way he needed them to. If Matt had gotten one of the doubles, it's an open question as to who would've won with a final jeopardy question that no one got right!
... i thought it was man in the iron mask too...

i made a scope for my laser musket out of some (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 November 2015 02:43 (eight years ago) link

I guessed that too, but the Count of Monte Cristo shows up a lot on Jeopardy. From searching the J! archives, there have been over 50 clues about it in the past.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 20 November 2015 03:39 (eight years ago) link

Just found out Alex used to be a champion poker player, so I guess he knows betting strategies well.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 20 November 2015 03:41 (eight years ago) link

Always assumed The Count of Monte Cristo was a more famous novel than The Man in the Iron Mask. Maybe not in America?

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Friday, 20 November 2015 04:13 (eight years ago) link

Truly painful for me to learn that an FJ in the finals this season came down to The Count of Monte Cristo, a book I've read probably a dozen times since 9th grade. ;_; So it goes, so it goes!

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Friday, 20 November 2015 04:41 (eight years ago) link

there's not reasonably any way either Matt or Terry can win at this point, 27k in the hole

Adorable? It was mortifying! As was his fist pumping.

Alex is the best.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 20 November 2015 14:29 (eight years ago) link

I like it when the contestants are smart enough to realize the point of the game is to WIN MONEY and not fucking around with bitch bets on daily doubles and final jeopardy

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 20 November 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

When I went to the in-person audition they told us that you have to pay your own airfare and hotel (often with little advanced notice) so the 2nd and 3rd place prize money vanishes quickly. There's no reason NOT to just go for it bet-wise.

Also I have a DVR for the first in like 8 years which means I'm finally able to watch this regularly - and of course my power went out on Tuesday evening and just came back on this morning so I missed most of the Tournament of Champions semi and final rounds.

joygoat, Friday, 20 November 2015 22:18 (eight years ago) link

So are we just not going to talk about that woman's awful voice?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 17:49 (eight years ago) link

This article NOT ON THE MONEY.

This is not uptalk. It's something awful and it hurts my ears but it's not uptalk.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 17:52 (eight years ago) link

It has been driving us nuts
She sounds normal when she is talking to alex but there is some really weird pseudo valley thing happening in the last two letters of every word she puts a question mark on

Eugene Goostman (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 18:24 (eight years ago) link

This is not uptalk. It's something awful and it hurts my ears but it's not uptalk.

Yeah, nothing uptalky about it; she just stretches out the last syllable. And it's so so annoying.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 18:32 (eight years ago) link

Gf describes it as "she turns the last syllable into a half note"

Eugene Goostman (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 18:33 (eight years ago) link

Yes! It doesn't sound uptalky/valley girl-esque to me at all. I think stretching out the last syllable is a good description but it's mind boggling. Where does someone pick this up? How does she not hear how weird this sounds? WHY OH WHY DID SHE HAVE TO WIN THEREBY SUBJECTING US TO ANOTHER NIGHT OF THIS?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 18:34 (eight years ago) link

Really everyone? I feel like her voice is such a non-issue, and while I don't fully agree with it being "uptalk," it does feel a little like policing. There was a male champion with a really exaggerated Boston accent on recently, and nothing was made of it.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 25 November 2015 00:02 (eight years ago) link

Yes, her voice is annoying, but no, it isn't a big deal. Also, a joke Twitter account and some ranting asshole on YouTube do not necessitate an ugly trend that requires think piece-level intervention.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 25 November 2015 01:19 (eight years ago) link

I do like the Jep twitter account with the pithy descriptions of the contestant's anecdotes:
https://twitter.com/CoolJepStories

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 25 November 2015 03:32 (eight years ago) link

Jfc obviously it's not actually a big deal. It was, however, one of the strangest vocal ticks I've ever heard which is why I commented on it. The article was ridiculous.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 November 2015 10:47 (eight years ago) link

Wasn't meaning to give you shit, and I sincerely apologize if it came off that way. I was actually relieved, in a "so its not just me" way, when I saw your original post; it was scrolling down further and realizing that this had reached think piece-level proportions well beyond the sphere of a thread where we talk about weird/funny/surprising/annoying things on Jeopardy that I was reacting to.

And besides, all irrelevant now anyway!

obviously a lot of the hate she's getting is gendered. that said it does sound excruciating
