All i can recall is in my town a couple of prominent metallers hated it as a sell out and they were into real extreme stuff like cradle of filth. Funny how that worked out innit?

I can get why people who were into their real sick brand of grind/death-grind felt "betrayed" by the move to less 'extreme' pastures but IMO I feel like Carcass never would have achieved much permanently staying in Reek/Symphonies mode.
Melo-death of today often gets derided for forgetting to rock at the same time. "Heartwork" was melodic death with teeth.
