kinda weird that an album as huge as this isn't getting a lot of talk around here. I do know plenty of death metal hard-liners (not Hardliners) who think it's a sell-out piece of shit and who felt vindicated by Swansong but c'mon, this has riffs for days. "No Love Lost" for me. Saw them do that on the reunion tour and it just reigned.

uh... no

xp: yeah I thought it was kind of a sellout for a minute but then I listened to it; you really can't fuck with it, man, crazy riffs for years and Walker still sounds like himself; I don't even know that it could've been a sellout at the time, you know? Nobody was really playing music like that back then. It seems like it only became a subgenre after Heartwork.

And they play with such vicious conviction! I'd love to read an oral history of Heartwork, actually, because it sounds like they rediscovered a love of Euro-HM and were just driven to this new style.

Probably Death Certificate for me too, again, but every track is great.

This was probably my 2nd death metal album. 5.99 used at CD Warehouse.

"Buried Dreams" was my email tag Freshman year of college.

All i can recall is in my town a couple of prominent metallers hated it as a sell out and they were into real extreme stuff like cradle of filth.
Funny how that worked out innit?

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 17 October 2015 15:52 (eight years ago) link

I can get why people who were into their real sick brand of grind/death-grind felt "betrayed" by the move to less 'extreme' pastures but IMO I feel like Carcass never would have achieved much permanently staying in Reek/Symphonies mode.

Melo-death of today often gets derided for forgetting to rock at the same time. "Heartwork" was melodic death with teeth.
