Streetcleaner, easy, but didn't they also have a s/t debut LP?
― 2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Saturday, 4 April 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago) link
It was an EP rather than LP, so didn't include. Very good though.
― Duke, Saturday, 4 April 2009 23:21 (fifteen years ago) link
Fair enough. I didn't realize it was considered an EP. 8 songs/30 minutes is pretty generous for an EP!

Yep, Streetcleaner is seen as the first full album. Godflesh an EP
I'm listening to Pure right now, and having doubts about my Streetcleaner vote. Predominance and Pure itself are just fantastic.
― Duke, Saturday, 4 April 2009 23:31 (fifteen years ago) link
Almost picked Pure... but nah - Streetcleaner it is.

Pure for sure. "Love, Hate (Slugbaiting)" is my favorite Godflesh song ever.

Pure by a nose. I love how obtuse and impenetrable it is. It's like the metal verison of Tilt or something.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 5 April 2009 00:22 (fifteen years ago) link
Of these I've heard the first four (as well as lots of the EP material, Love and Hate in Dub, etc.) and I'll go for Pure.

How are the last two albums?
― ilxor, Sunday, 5 April 2009 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link
If you haven't heard Hymns you really, really should. (And not just for the sense of where things would go re: Jesu, because it can and should be judged on its own considerable merits.) Still v. down I missed seeing them on that tour given that the band fell apart before it happened (at least, out here).
That said Pure probably remains a sentimental favorite.

streetcleaner just a tiny bit above pure

Interesting. I've never really heard this song, as I bought the vinyl LPs at the time, and this song was only included on the later CD release (aloong with "Pure II"). I downloaded it a while back, though, so I must give it a listen.

Streetcleaner (but I hope selfless gets a vote)

Streetcleaner...it's not even close in my case.

You know what needs to be re-issued badly? Ice's Under the Skin. When I get in the mood for Martin/Broderick, Under the Skin is always the first thing I put on. I bought it off of emusic years ago, but it is ripped at 128kbps. This album still sells for like $100.

great discography, should we repoll with the two new ones? i would vote for post-self, no. 1 post-self fan here
I liked World Lit Only By Fire a lot but Post-Self never clicked with me. Would still ultimately vote for either Pure or Selfless. Isn't there a new one coming?

i hope so!!!!
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 January 2021 04:32 (three years ago) link
ok so part of it is that post self is the ultimate cyborg godflesh record for me. it partially explores the kind of industrial dub/dance area of the band hinted at by "slavestate" and the dancier end of the discog, and i love this sound and don't think there's enough of it. songs like "parasite" are totally from that world, when i close my eyes i can see club lights pulsing to its beat. but then the album also contains godfleshy brutality and jesuish beauty (and "the cyclic end" which is caught in some godflesh/jesu purgatory) and neither of these feel out of place bc they're part of the arc of sound the album creates over time. it's just... everything works and the riffs slam and the vocals sound like somebody screaming while having their body replaced. just kind of feel like it's the apex of the whole jk broadrick project, deep, dark, pummeling, kinda sounds like a tank rolling over a field of human skulls, but also totally related to dance music and dub and rap, spliced with moments of heartstopping beauty bc ugliness and beauty are both part of the transformation, horror and transcendence the same feeling just with different inputs
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 January 2021 05:13 (three years ago) link
there's this very dubbed-out dissociated feeling to post self that... idk it's not in the early records, nor is it in a world lit only by fire. it really hits during "mortality sorrow"'s combo of terminator synth + robot voice
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 January 2021 05:17 (three years ago) link
contains godfleshy brutality and jesuish beauty (and "the cyclic end" which is caught in some godflesh/jesu purgatory)
correcting myself, both "the cyclic end" and "the infinite end" are caught in the jesuflesh continuum, and are both scarier than they are beautiful i think. maybe it depends on the time of day i'm listening to it. "the infinite end" is like... idk, maybe about as beautiful as the cure's pornography, lol

perfect record though, 10/10, would post about it several times in a row while listening to it again

the chorus to Pantera's "Walk" steals from "Like Rats"
