had dinner with a knoxville friend in nyc tonite. she recently decamped to farragut from north knox (for love, which is the only acceptable reason for moving to farragut iirc), and she says all the west knox subdivisions around them are getting hammered by foreclosures. there's one with no actual houses on it, just a big sign announcing "fogginton brambles" or whatever, homes starting at $360,000, and it's just a bare patch of land with a backhoe that's been sitting there lone-sentinel like since september.

the silence of the burbs.

two weeks pass...

i cant believe i posted about "sour hour"! a knoxville secret, outed!!!

so, i noticed that all the blogs about knoxville are retarded, and if knoxville is going to have a blogging hero it might as well be/should probably be me, so i have decided to butthouse my architecture blog and start a knox blog. i need a name.

  • MARBLE CITY MADMAN
  • BLOOD VESTAL (?! too subtle?)
  • TENNESSEE TRASH (do you remember these awesome commercials!!!)

That's so weird, I just checked your arch blog today on a whim. Sorry to see it go...even if it was sort of abortive I thought it had promise!

As someone who knows none of the Kville references, I think "Marble City Madman" is the best just as a name but I don't know what it might be borrowing from.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 19 April 2009 05:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Doc: Ted Nugent is known as the MOTOR city madman, so it is borrowing from that!

the arch blog, i just cant update it enough for it to be an actual blog. couple that with the fact that i have essentially nothing to say, and its kind of a dumb idea. i dont know. maybe i could manage one update a week.

i vote for tennessee trash!! be aware that this is the name of one of the softball teams that plays once a year at a sekrit location in jacksboro (other teams: the kentucky feelers, the carolina creepers, the virginia culture vultures). i really think you should go this year roxy. it's on memorial day. i'll give you directions. seriously just show up and you will have a wonderful time.

what does butthouse mean?

Also, what about some BBQ-related pun?

kingfish, Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago) link

butthouse is like smash something and destroy it, in the style of sitting down hard on a cupcake

tuppence b. bag (roxymuzak), Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:34 (fifteen years ago) link

bbq i associate with two nauseating cities known as memphis and nashville

tuppence b. bag (roxymuzak), Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:35 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean i love bbq, but i dont consider it a knoxville thing?

tuppence b. bag (roxymuzak), Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:43 (fifteen years ago) link

but i'm sure he's a fine young man.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:51 (fifteen years ago) link

also, i bid on that obama-sunsphere painting but topped out at $25. it went for $70 or something.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:52 (fifteen years ago) link

james coffey is just a dude. for some reason in the back of my mind i always thought of him as "gypsy mothra." then the other day i saw him at the longbranch and he slaps me on the shoulder and is like "you're the one who writes those ROXY MUZAK blogs!!!!" and i was like wow, this guy is really not gypsy mothra

tuppence b. bag (roxymuzak), Sunday, 19 April 2009 06:58 (fifteen years ago) link

haha no.

i haven't even been to knoxville in like two years. it's mostly a fantasy place for me. like fantasy baseball except a city.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 April 2009 07:06 (fifteen years ago) link

you mean you pick the people that are in knoxville and bet on what is going to happen there

tuppence b. bag (roxymuzak), Sunday, 19 April 2009 07:11 (fifteen years ago) link

a little odd but ay

tuppence b. bag (roxymuzak), Sunday, 19 April 2009 07:11 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it's something between an adopted hometown and a hobby. some people go birdwatching, i keep a remote eye on knoxville.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 April 2009 07:15 (fifteen years ago) link

so strange!! i think a lot of ex-pats do this, though

half the people on blab arent even knoxvillians anyway

tuppence b. bag (roxymuzak), Sunday, 19 April 2009 07:21 (fifteen years ago) link

knoxville expats are possessive about the place, for sure. including people like me who weren't even from there to start with. i don't have a clear explanation for that. some kind of murky gravitational pull. but a lot of the people i know who have left have ended up back there eventually. i sort of expect to too.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 April 2009 07:28 (fifteen years ago) link

lol @ the argument upthread about what constitutes vestal

had a remarkably similar argument at the branch last night with two of us trying to explain where candoro marble was over the shoulders of a poor kid who did not care what vestal was/was not and just wanted to kn ow how to get to candoro marble

anyway, that argument ALSO included the sentence "that's the main intersection in vestal!!!!"

I've only been to Knoxville in the past 10+ years for a Tom Waits show...the afternoon prior I bought a pipe at some terrible headshop and then hung out at some park near a bridge on the river? I think I need a return adventure?

tuppence b. bag (roxymuzak), Sunday, 19 April 2009 08:40 (fifteen years ago) link

its cause its a great place

it is a great place, it's just always a little hard for me to explain why. my associations with it are all so personal that they don't easily translate into anything anyone else could relate to.
