re: crucible - i'm looking forward to the return of iron banner and trials of osiris (both pvp modes allow for gear/level advantages instead of re-scaling everything to a common damage/defense level as is done in vanilla crucible) to see how the new expansion affects the mechanics. trials was an exercise in futility for anyone who wasn't 1. a dead-eye sniper and 2. decked out with a specifically curated arsenal of fully ascended legendaries/exotics. the armor from trials was the best aesthetically, in my opinion, in the pre-TTK era so i'm interested to see what the new stuff looks like when it becomes available. (additionally i hope they bring PoE back into the fold with a new loot table / vendor rewards setup, since i actually used to enjoy this game mode.)

iron banner has always been a mix of fun and frustration, and i seriously hope they re-calibrate the rewards (like giving 300 light gear as options for participation for ex) as opposed to pre-TTK when the armor, the weapons were always pretty solid especially when bungie fucked up and gave final round on the spear, required ascension materials to make useful.

have had an awesome time with the Taken King legendary edition since starting a few weeks back.

feeling pretty badass right now if i do say so myself, and still not done any of the 3 expansion stories/raids etc: https://www.bungie.net/en/Legend/Gear/2/4611686018451451954/2305843009334564101

pretty dope robe. i really dig the vaguely malicious-catholic-bishop vibe you get on some of the warlock gear

all my friends are vampires (art), Thursday, 1 October 2015 16:45 (eight years ago) link

i've read that you get bonus drops for every strike you do in a row. anyone know if the same thing applies to crucible? also - i've been decoding my blue engrams to bring up my light level - should i save my purple engrams for when i'm around 290, or just decode them now?

Mordy, Thursday, 1 October 2015 16:57 (eight years ago) link

i think just decode as you go - but if you have mulitple ones at a time, during your visit make sure for every one you decode, you then equip it right away before decoding another one...
every bit of higher light = better shit decoded

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 1 October 2015 17:00 (eight years ago) link

i don't think any such buff yet exists for the crucible.

and i just decoded everything as it dropped to keep my light level moving upward as fast as possible. i've heard some people argue that you should save any exotic engrams that drop for you north of 290 or 295 because once you hit 300 light, exotic engrams can decode 310 light items. i probably don't have the willpower to do this but i can see the logic in it.

all my friends are vampires (art), Thursday, 1 October 2015 17:01 (eight years ago) link

jamie why do you have green stuff at this point. does that color become relevant again?

polyphonic, Thursday, 1 October 2015 18:44 (eight years ago) link

its because in some categories i'm still getting more greens drop with higher attack than i am other colours
also because some are just enjoyable to use in crucible!

jamiesummerz, Friday, 2 October 2015 10:00 (eight years ago) link

got my first exotic drop today off some rando story mission ultra, finally cracked 260, off to heroic strikes tonight who wants in

its frustrating in places, and the lack of matchmaking on certain things is mega irritating (prison of elders above level 28), but by god this game is so fucking addictive and enjoyable.

now to do that first raid...

jamiesummerz, Monday, 12 October 2015 16:41 (eight years ago) link

third week running i tried the new raid and my grp could only make it to the first boss. plus side - im becoming expert at the first three or four steps

hoping to take another stab tonight but it may not happen.

also iron banner and trials start this week. prepare for frustration!

all my friends are vampires (art), Monday, 12 October 2015 18:31 (eight years ago) link

had to put this down after i spent saturday chasing the exotic sword. why do i want an exotic sword.

great game tho

adam, Monday, 12 October 2015 20:25 (eight years ago) link

ugh yeah im on the "collect materials & get ability kills" step and after an hr last night i wanted to tear my eyes out.

i only want the sword bc i think it will put me at 300 light at which pt i can start decoding exotic engrams again. im not sure there's much use for it outside boosting ones light level

all my friends are vampires (art), Tuesday, 13 October 2015 14:36 (eight years ago) link

is there an ilx raid group

am0n, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 19:36 (eight years ago) link

im doing the 5 heroic strikes on a 2nd char and theres one that is just a huge pain in the ass from the get go. i think its called saber, its got a defend the warsat thing at the start that was just endless wipes til i gave up

am0n, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

xp not to my knowledge but there could be. are you in the ps4 community thing?

Also yes saber is the worst. it was the nightfall a week or so back and i think a lot of people cheesed it. there's a spot where you can ride your sparrow at just the right angle and fall through the map to spawn under the warsat which allows you to stay in range for transmission and out of range for enemies, thus negating the danger of that encounter

all my friends are vampires (art), Tuesday, 13 October 2015 20:08 (eight years ago) link

ha i heard about that glitch. in fact i think i saw a teammate fly by me towards the cave and disappear so i guess thats what that was

how do i join the ps4 thing? seems like it doesn't allow you to search for groups. ive got multiple psn accounts but this is my destiny one

jesus there is a shit ton of quests when you finish the main story of The Taken King! a bit overwhelming.

anyway, finally had some helpful dudes help me through first raid (VOG) last night - and after probably pissing them off for 20 minutes failing to do some simple jumps, scored a gjallarhorn :D
fun times.

trials of Osiris is fucking nuts.

INTOXICATING LIQUORS (art), Sunday, 1 November 2015 02:57 (eight years ago) link

way more fun with new bounties, you are pretty much guaranteed some trials loot which was super hard to get in y1

still need a 7 win card to get the full auto scout. got to 6 earlier before we lost it earlier

INTOXICATING LIQUORS (art), Sunday, 1 November 2015 03:00 (eight years ago) link

obviously most matchmade teams would be shitty in this, but its still a bitch that you cant even have the fun of taking part without a fireteam

jamiesummerz, Monday, 2 November 2015 11:04 (eight years ago) link

yeah one of the big hurdles to the best content in this game is working w randoms in fireteams matchmade from the various sources. i'd be down to get a fireteam of ilxors to try out trials next time if anybody is interested. i'm no dead-eye but we could at least move through some of the bounty steps.

INTOXICATING LIQUORS (art), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:59 (eight years ago) link

Got sleeper simulant AND black spindle tonight, feel like this might be a good time to put it down for a couple of months though and get back into some backlog.

Destiny®: The Taken King - Legendary Edition

^^^this is on deal on the UK store. do you need destiny retail disc to run this?

hot doug stamper (||||||||), Friday, 11 December 2015 19:20 (eight years ago) link

also I don't really get destiny. does it have a campaign mode and is it any good? or do you need to play online to get the best out of it? and is the online competitive or is it co-op?

hot doug stamper (||||||||), Friday, 11 December 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

Yeah that's the whole thing. It has a campaign. It's not great when you're playing through the year one bits but gets a lot more fun later. You need to be online all the time to play it. There's some pvp but you can choose to ignore it if you like, mostly it's co-op.

JimD, Friday, 11 December 2015 19:45 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

I got Taken King and it has its hooks in me again. It sucks that I spent all that time leveling up Level 20 weapons and armor last time around, though. If I had known that I'd never have spent a dime with that fool Xur.

I miss Dinklage!

This worth picking up now?

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 February 2016 15:05 (eight years ago) link

I can totally understand people's beef with how badly this launched, how much they ended up paying for the DLCs as they came out, and what a sometimes irritating journey its been to get where it is now... but having come on board with The Taken King, i can't say i've ever played a game as much as this or had such enjoyable multiplayer experiences...even back when I was a 16 year old and had a shit ton of free time.

so, i would say, if you don't mind it possibly sucking up a lot of your spare time, then yes definitely. the satisfaction of clearing the Kings Fall raid for the first time was amazing.

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 25 February 2016 17:12 (eight years ago) link

i would recommend www.the100.io for finding a decent group to do any multiplayer stuff with. there are some amazingly kind and very patient sherpas out there who will deal with your rubbishness to help you out on some of the harder end game pieces

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 25 February 2016 17:13 (eight years ago) link

I'm 265 light if anyone needs an extra on ps4. psn: josephcotten.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 25 February 2016 18:11 (eight years ago) link

cool. It's getting cheap now and I'm looking for games to spend too much time on.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 February 2016 20:02 (eight years ago) link

yeah I've seen Taking King legendary edition in CEX for about £15-20 so its really good value now considering you get the original story campaign, house of wolves + dark below campaigns, the big new taken king campaign which also triggers off a ton of additional quests and missions + all the PVP modes and events

psn: jamiesummerz
at about 311 light now, only things i've yet to do are kings fall hard mode and Trials Of Osiris lighthouse... one of those almost definitely won't be happening

jamiesummerz, Friday, 26 February 2016 10:27 (eight years ago) link

I've not picked it up since the SRL stuff was happening around christmas, the valentine's day business didn't tempt me back but I'm sure the next significant content drop will. I'm 305 light at this point and I think I read they're upping the level cap again pretty soon? So that killed any motivation to battle up towards 320 now, when I can no doubt breeze past it if I just hold off a few weeks/months.

JimD, Friday, 26 February 2016 11:02 (eight years ago) link

i don't really care about 320 at all, but it definitely helps to keep you a bit more competitive on iron banner/trials/doing the raids to be at least somewhere near that upper level. Crimson Doubles was surprisingly fun, and after some whiners didn't get the ghost shells to drop they ended up giving everyone who did the quest a 320 ghost, so was worth a quick go.

JimD, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

waiting for pc. october! wtf

adam, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 16:16 (six years ago) link

I'm just behind you, few light points away from 21. Even though the story was guff I do feel like a big chunk of my motivation vanished when I got to the end of it. Does seem like it's grind-only from here on, and so far it's still fun grind but I don't know how long I'll stay interested.

― JimD, Friday, 3 October 2014 12:11 Bookmark

hahahaha and here were are 3 fucking years later and I'm still playing and getting hype about the new one.

JimD, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 16:18 (six years ago) link

clever way for bungie to market a new expansion

👁 (am0n), Wednesday, 6 September 2017 15:08 (six years ago) link

reviews are saying that the setting/story is less impressionistic and nonsensical this time around, which kinda puts me off. the dinklage gibberish was half the appeal.

adam, Thursday, 7 September 2017 14:11 (six years ago) link

rip dinkbot ;_;

Wesley Shackleton explained "look at that beast." (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 7 September 2017 17:31 (six years ago) link

maybe I don't understand what a sequel is. i keep seeing people call this a new expansion or new dlc.

there's a completely new story much better than anything in D1 or its expansions.
there are hundreds of new guns and armour pieces.
there are 4 new planets/areas which are much bigger, far more active than anything in D1.
there is a shit ton of extra missions on every planet.
almost every system of the grind is improved.
it look a ton better.

what else would it need to constitute "sequel-ness"?

jamiesummerz, Monday, 11 September 2017 11:10 (six years ago) link

Yeah hard to fathom, especially when you can move from one Far Cry or Just Cause to another and hardly see any change, and nobody takes issue with that.

I mean I guess if you're one of the people who played D1 for the story missions only, then did the same for D2, then you could perhaps argue there's more recycled bad guys and/or cabal ship interiors than you'd expect? But as soon as you even scratch the surface pretty much everything else has changed to some extent. The new patrol areas especially, they're lovely this time round.

JimD, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 13:29 (six years ago) link

and they're just so so full of things happening - its almost non stop compared to the pretty barren landscapes of D1. i keep planning on clearing side missions on each planet and get sidetracked by public events / exploring / high value enemies etc.

blind raid attempt happening tonight!

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 14 September 2017 12:32 (six years ago) link

How did that go? Don't think anyone in my group has had a crack at it yet but I'm not ready for it anyway, baby + destiny don't mix so well so I've only got up to about 240 so far.
